On this cold and snowing January day, I'm reminiscing about the beautiful autumn day I spent at Paint Creek Trail. I love this part of metro Detroit. It's still sparsely populated, quiet, and there are miles upon miles of trails that are perfect for walkers, runners, and bicyclists. Paint Creek Trail is 8.9 miles long. I have taken walks along this trail starting at Rochester Municipal Park as well as five miles further north at Oakland Township Parks and Recreation which also houses the Paint Creek Cider Mill. The trail is so scenic and it's a great space for quiet contemplation and to admire nature. I'm looking forward to returning to Paint Creek Trail in the springtime.

We have been on this trail several times. Sometimes for races. Sometimes to run. Sometimes to walk. Today we were here to cheer on a friend who was running a Marine Corps Marathon. Virtually!! It's hard enough to run a virtual 5K. So running a full 26.2 without the support of fans cheering you on? Very difficult! So our friend's girlfriend set up a surprise and we were all on different mile markers cheering him on. We were set at the 25 mile marker. We got there early and had to sit and wait several hours. Than God for good company. It was so cold! But we cheered him on and went and grabbed some beers after! We were so happy to be able to help!

The trails here are beautiful! They can get pretty busy, although people are very respectful of personal space. There's always tons of people walking - bonus, many have cute dogs to say hi to! - running, taking photos, and just having a great time in nature. It's been a really great thing to do on the weekends during all this pandemic business; it gets me out, gets the dog out, and it's nice to see some friendly faces, even if they are just saying "good afternoon" and "on your left"

This trail is beautiful! I came here to run, parked in Rochester park. It has a playground and nice area to walk. But the trail itself gorgeous. I didn't feel tired because I was running and looking at all the nature, colors, and beauty. Deers came to me to say hi. People are walking, running, biking, taking pictures. If you need a long run - here it is. I loved this trail and will come back for a run or with my family to enjoy nature.

This trail is very walking, biking, and pet friendly! The locals exchange hellos while passing in the opposite direction-- expect to say hello 20 times more or less depending on how long you stay on the path. We never walked the entire way but the map indicates it goes straight into town (how cool!!) I expect the weekends are packed, so if you're bringing a dog who gets skittish around bikers and such, try a mid week early morning walk. It starts getting busier around 11 am and onwards. There are a few stops along the way, down a set of stairs for your dog to play on the river's water. My dogs had all the fun getting their paws wet and splashing around in the shallow waters. It's a great mid-walk break to cool them down. They do allow for fishing so please be careful to look for hooks and trash in case those before you are not responsible. But to be honest, I haven't seen an issue with that.

Fantastic park! It was very well manicured and looked after. The area for the ducks was great! The kids had a lot of fun at the playground section, and the paved paths made for a good walk, not to mention the actual trail. The free parking lot felt safe being right next to the police station.

Beautiful trail for biking, walking, running, or horseback riding. It goes from LO to Rochester. Very beautiful ponds and feilds and the creek itself is a great place to be. Even in the winter it has its own charm. There are some spots that people hang out on the trail that are likely to be safe, but if you are really a safety type person stay on the trail and bring a friend.

Could you go swimming in the lake?

Not deep enough for a swim but I've taken a hop in there after a long bike ride! It's popular for kids to ride down sections of it in inner tubes too.

That started my long-term love affair with this park. Parking around here can be interesting, but now that I no longer live at the apartments directly across the street from this park, I find that parking at the Rochester Hills Public Library in downtown Rochester is my favorite option. There is a path that leads all the way behind the library, along the creek, to Paint Creek Trail, with an offshoot to the Rochester Municipal Park, all just a 5 minute walk from the library! In an area that features many great playgrounds and parks to take your family to, Innovation Hills has always stood out. There is a lack of options for younger children though (no infant swings?). The three stars? One of the new features of this park is the addition of Park Mobile being introduced for the main parking lot. Signs everywhere reminding you that you better have paid your $1.50 an hour! There is of course a free dirt lot across the busy road for your convenience. Or a parking 'annual pass' you can purchase from the Rochester Hills website. Our society struggles with the concept of 'the third place'. Parks and playgrounds are a haven for families and a community builder outside of work and home. What in the world is the motivation behind suddenly charging for parking? 1 - The City of Rochester Hills wants to prioritize park access for its citizens? Charging for parking doesn't keep out non-residents and in fact just causes Rochester Hills citizens to pay more for something they are already paying for. 2 - The park is often extremely crowded so charging for parking may reduce visitor count? If this was the motivation I am confident this strategy is not working. 3 - We want to encourage more families to park in the dirt lot across the street and attempt to cross a highway? I have more faith in humanity than that. Oh, I think I got it! To quote Tim Robinson's sketch 'The Driving Crooner' - "I gotta figure out how to make money on this thing..it's simply TOO GOOD!"

The paths we followed were simple and good for families, although I would not recommend dragging a wagon or anything like that with you. There were easy to hike sections, as well as smaller, more off-road trails perfect for those that enjoy mountain biking. I finally had the time to stop in yesterday with my date and his kids to check the place out, and we both were pleasantly surprised with how much fun it was. For starters, the park is really well kept. Grass was cut, parking lot was clean and well maintained and all equipment was in good working order. After walking around for a bit, we both realized there was more to do then meets the eye from the road. There's plenty to do for both kids and adults. The one thing that drew my eye initially was the picture of the fire truck on the wall of the building they have right next to the parking lot. The park itself is named after a fire chief, thus, the fire truck theme going on here. They have tons of stuff to do here. They have a lovely covered pavilion with plenty of seating and well maintained picnic tables. They also have a play area for the kids, soccer fields, a horse shoe area, tennis courts and a sand volley ball area. They also had an area that appeared to be a Bocce Ball court, but no equipment to play the game. Also, there was a building with the fire truck painted on that I assume has bathrooms or a tribute area inside. I can't say for sure because the doors were locked and you couldn't see much through the doors. The only downfall to this park is no obvious place for bathrooms. I assume it's in the building but I cannot say for sure. I also saw a few adults walking with fishing poles and equipment. I guess you can go fishing around here as well. I believe there's hiking trails as well if your interested in that also. This park is a great addition to the community and everything about it was impressive.
