We were rushed. The consultant, Mark, didn't even sit down while he was "consulting," and we were working off of someone else's desk (and the "someone else" was working there too.) We paid $150 for 1/2 hour consultation and we were there about 20 minutes. There were a few stones he couldn't identify and we felt he was guessing on some of them. I felt like we were bothering him. Sometimes a girl needs an appraisal. Yes, that's right there's judging involved but this time only for insurance purposes. I called a friend and told her I needed a good appraiser for some jewelry I had. I thought, since I was recently engaged, I should have the ring checked out and I had some earrings that I had been promising myself that I would get appraised. I called and made an appointment. They made it for a couple days out and they said I could drop off my pieces or simply wait for them. I thought since I was already driving downtown, I would just wait. They told me of coffee shops downstairs, etc. However, I was content to catch up on my reading. They had a couple of chairs out of the way for you to wait while the gemologist worked with your items. They told me to allow two hours but I was back on the road after about an hour and a half. They validate your parking. Which is good because there is a smart park right across the street. I thought they covered the entire thing but they only gave me an hour, so I ended up paying for the additional hour. It seems like they could pay for the entire parking duration as you are spending a couple of hundred dollars to have items appraised. Perhaps an oversight. The values came out about where I figured they would, which was good and they cleaned up my gems for me. The gemologist did make some suggestions about my earrings and perhaps getting new backs for the earrings. I will probably consider it in the future but I couldn't be troubled at the time today. It's $90 for your first item and the second item is $70 and I believe it gets considerably less per item as you add items. I'm sure I'll be back if I need anything else appraised. When I used PGL again, to see about selling some items and getting GIA reports, there was an initial miscommunication about pricing, but it was quickly and or professionally resolved. I've gone to Pacific Gem Labs twice to get some appraisal done. The first time was for my engagement ring and the second time was for another ring. On both pieces, I worked with Mark. He's knowledgeable and friendly. He also took the time to answer any questions that I had about the jewelry and the appraisal. They estimate the appraisal takes about 90 minutes but I've been able to pick up my jewelry after about an hour. You can also drop off your item and pick it up later in the day. There's a coffee shop on the first floor of the building (Lotus & Bean Espresso Bar), a Starbucks about two blocks away, and plenty of malls around if you're looking to stay and kill time. While there is a small waiting area stocked with magazines in their office, I preferred to get out and let them do their work. Both my items were appraised a tad bit higher than I was expecting but still within range. The difference, in my opinion, didn't warrant a second appraisal elsewhere. They'll also clean your jewelry for you. Their jewelry appraisal prices went up a bit between my 2 visits, which was 3 months apart. When I first went, the appraisal was $100 with a hard copy of the written appraisal. The second time, it was $100 with a PDF of the appraisal and $110 with a hard copy of the appraisal. Pacific Gem Lab helped me stop gem fraud. I ordered a Mozambique tourmaline and a pink topaz gemstone from the internet. When the stones arrived, PGL quickly determined both were synthetic corundum, almost worthless. I confronted one auction house, they instantly refunded my monies and admitted taken in by the supplier and the other gem store owner promised total refund. Without the help of PGL, I would have been out of hundreds of dollars. THANK YOU PGL for protecting the customer and keeping us from fraud. I took my vintage engagement ring to pacific gem lab for appraisal for insurance purposes after making an appointment over the phone. I knew nothing about the ring aside from that it was my great great grandmothers from the 1930s. From the moment I arrived I was treated so warmly and attentively by the staff. They took the time to educate me about my ring, pulling out old books to show me its vintage old mine cut. They seemed as excited about my engagement as I was, which made the process fun for me. I left the lab to shop at pioneer square and the ring was finished with its appraisal in an hour. The appraisal itself was true to what is listed on their website with photographs of the ring. I was emailed a pdf of the appraisal (so convenient for insurance) and purchased a paper copy for myself. After cleaning the ring for me I was even able to look at it under the microscope as more details about its craftsmanship were pointed out to me.
