The Homolje on the Wiedner Hauptstraße has a take-out counter on the ground floor, an attractive dining area on the first floor, and a large Schanigarten outside in warmer weather. Of course one Serbian food that everyone knows in Vienna is cevapcici. As cevapcici are a favorite of kids and adults alike, it's often a quick meal for a family. I'm happy to report that the cevapcici from Homolje were very well made and had the right spicing to make them tasty. They were served with a fresh housemade Serbian Lepinja bread. A delicious Teleća čorba soup began the meal. All of this was at a very fair price. The service was only so so - not very attentive or friendly - but it was decent enough not to detract from the tasty food. When you feel like eating Serbian in Vienna, Homolje Grill is a good choice...

All things considered, this is a 4 star place. Homolje is a classical Serbian Grill/Restaurant…read moreserving a wide variety of grilled meats on a charcoal grill. Although I would generally rate the food as 3.5 stars on average, when I consider the fantastically affordable prices, I am confident that 4 star rating is well deserved. So here is the review: - Karadjordjeva schnitzel - think of Wienerschnitzel rolled up and stuffed with kaymak (kind of extra fatty cream cheese spread), served with fries. This is a big dish (I doubt that you'll be able to finish it) and probably the most expensive one on the menu costing the whopping EUR 12. Very good quality meat, juicy and tender - 4.5 stars! - Raznjici - pork skewers. The best equivalent for this dish is Greek souvlaki. This is a very good dish, you get a generous portion of two skewers and some salad on the side, for an amazing price of EUR 4.80! The meat is tender and juicy (due to strategically placed fatty pieces), - easily 4 stars. - Cevapcici (or cevapi) - kind of skinless sausages made with ground beef and pork. I had better (a lot better). For some reason, every time I had them there, they were over-seasoned (I am not sure, but I think that they put MSG in the mix). Although extremely big and filling, as well as really inexpensive, I wouldn't give them more than 3 stars. - Pljeskavica - Serbian burger. Made out of the same meat as cevepcici above, served in a home made, warm, and totally awesome Serbian pita/bun (lepinja), for only EUR 3.90! Ask them to put some kaymak on top of it and it will make it exponentially better. Excellent deal and with kaymak a 3.5 star dish. You can also chose fancier, stuffed (with kaymak or cheese), version of pljeskavica or the one with bacon bits and spicy pepper flakes in the mix. - Sopska salad - kind of Greek salad with grated white cheese on top. Better when tomatoes are in season and if properly seasoned a solid 4 star dish. Go check it out if you are in the neighborhood. Many other grilled meats are on the menu. Four people eat and drink for well below EUR 40.

Great spot for lunch!…read more We were in the Parkring area and starving - this place looked busy so we stopped in and had a very good lunch for under EUR $10. The interior is clean, modern and absolutely packed with locals having lunch. The specialty is grilled meats, thus the "Grillhouse" name. The lunch menu offers two daily specials which include soup or salad for EUR $9.90. If you'd like to add an espresso on, it's just EUR $1 more. Because we're stereotypical Americans, we had the cheeseburger. Actually, it was because the other option was "ofenfleck" and neither of us had any idea what that entailed, so cheeseburgers it was. Our food arrived quickly and the burgers were really large - maybe 1/2lb or so. And they were really, really good - juicy, well grilled and very flavorful. I don't always travel to Austria to eat a cheeseburger, but when I do, I'll head back to Huth Grillhouse.

One of the better ones in Vienna, when they actually manage to get them medium rare. - Beef tartare - great! Ask to put an egg yolk on top for you to mix it in. Makes all the difference! - Steaks - Austria is not a steak destination... 'nuff said. - Appetizers - very good, especially melted Taleggio cheese with apples.

Decor: Fun and funky terrace style furniture and fresh easy going decor inside. Service: Polite, friendly and quick. Burgers: GREAT! There are a couple of burgers to choose from and all can be "pimped" with bacon, cheese etc. They all come with a large salad and choice of fries or wedges as well as your choice of extra sauce on the side. These are varied and delicious. I had the sweet whisky sauce and it was amazing. The wedges are homemade and very tasty. Large portion too. The salad with the burger is also quite reasonably sized and very tasty too. The burgers come with a choice of white or brown bread and cooked to your own individual taste. (Rare, medium, well done etc) They are juicy and taste flame grilled and for me the mixture of herbs is just spot on. A great experience and a great burger!

If you go for the traditional Smokey's burger (which I would recommend) you also choose your size: small, medium or large.....I went for the medium then lapsed into a food coma for an hour afterwards. It was so good. Maybe the number of options has confused you? Fear not. Friendly staff will guide you to your ultimate burger experience! Or, make the boring choice of just pick a pre-made burger from the menu ;) Either way, get to Smokey's!

That said, with hundreds of restaurants in Vienna making the same traditional Austrian cuisine, Schutzhaus doesn't stand out. Everything I had there was tasty, seasoned and cooked properly but it needed that extra something to make this place really memorable. Here is what I had the opportunity to taste: - Filet steak with mashed potatoes, white asparagus and hollandaise sauce. Let's start with the sauce, because that really was a 5 star excellent hollandaise sauce. The steak (especially for a filet, which has the lowest fat content of all steaks) was overcooked, on an extremely small side and at times, I questioned if it was a filet at all (probably an end piece). The mashed potatoes were good. All things considered, a 3 star dish. - Ham, cream and wild garlic pasta squares (Schinkenfleckerl) - 4 stars. Very good, creamy, just what you'd expect this dish to taste. A good comfort food dish. - Asparagus soup - well done, 4 stars. A little on the runnier and less creamy side, which I thought was a good thing since it made the soup a perfect, light spring time dish. - Schnitzel (both pork and chicken) - nothing to write home about. There are so many places that do the traditional Wienerschnitzel better. - Asparagus risotto - 5 stars. The only truly memorable dish. Creamy, not too heavy and al dente. - Salads - overall 4 stars, well seasoned and properly dressed. If you live in Vienna (or are here for a long visit) you should give Schutzhaus a try, otherwise, there are a lot of restaurants with nice outdoor seating all over this town.

Because let's see, both husband and I love the whole flair, and will go there happily anytime someone mentions the word Schutzhaus. The casual approach of their quite pretty staff, who all look as a group of friends playing waiters and barkeepers as a side job because they had time that evening, is as refreshing as those lovely seasonal Prosecco creations involving fruits from own garden they always offer as aperitif. The white "Landhaus" furnishing with cute details, and the fire place - all incredibly cosy. Sitting outside in the summer in the thick shade of trees, wow, one of the nicest places to do so in Vienna. And then I came to a conclusion it is the menu. It changes seasonally which is great. However, there is always the same pattern. It is the menu that doesn't reflect the rest of the flair of this place, mainly determined by its lovely staff: young, international, relaxed, informal. It is a menu which you can find in a cook book you bought once because it was written by a well-known cook and it was on sale in Thalia, so it seemed very legitimate... but you will never ever try to make any of the recipes at home. It will collect dust because it will not inspire you. There is no fusion. It is just what it is, well-prepared, at times excellent, straightforward food made by a very good professional chef. And that is when I usually have troubles selecting a light, and above all exciting dinner. It is probably meant to suit the traditional taste of the surrounding neighbourhoods, and it is just me who is having false expectations based on the vibes of this place. So, I will keep going.. but i must keep the fifth star too.
