Bucket list item checked off my list!…read more After moving to Nashville I knew I wanted to do a road trip up to Kentucky to see the caves. Did the Domes and Dripstones tour. 2 hours. Approximately a mile, up and back down 500 or so stairs. Gregg, our tour guide, was just the best! Seeing the intricacies of the caves was simply mind boggling. If you ever find yourself nearby, definitely check it out. Free parking and only $20 for the tour, a must do!

Mammoth cave accessible tour is a death trap waiting to happen…read more On April 2nd 2026 we booked the accessible cave tour for our family with our son who has muscular dystrophy and who is wheelchair bound and requires a ventilator to breathe. There's an elevator that takes us down into the cave 267 feet. There were two tour guides. We split up into two groups because we couldn't all fit in the elevator at once. We were in the second group to go down. However, when it was our turn, the elevator stopped working. They called maintenance. After about 10 minutes they got the elevator to work. I asked the maintenance person, "if we go down are you sure that it will work to take us back up". He said that he couldn't say. He said sometimes they have to call in an engineer and that it could take a long time....like hours. I explained that if the elevator didn't work, we would need the fire department to carry him out the 267 feet. I then asked how often do you get in situations where the elevator can't be fixed and somebody has to be taken out by emergency crew. He told me about 10 times a year (doing the math is about once every 36 days). Needless to say that's way too high of a risk to be in a life or death situation. We got our car and went home. Mammoth cave is accessible in name only. Families need to know this before they trust people that they shouldn't, and put their medically fragile loved ones into dangerous situations.
