If you haven't ever driven through this area, you are in for a treat, with its grandiose mansions, roads lined with gracious eucalyptus and huge citrus groves and avocado farms. Lighten up on the gas pedal and put on your adventurer's hat. Meños Farms is one of several open-air fruit and vegetable stands in the area, but honestly, one of the best for quality. Very nicely set up, you can find a great representation of what the area is famous for: fresh citrus and berries, avocados, seasonal vegetables, raw honey. They also sell a nice variety of fresh breads from the Old Town bakery. My son swears by their banana bread, but there is so many more choices in baked goods (I'm looking at you, apricot coffee cake). They were all very fresh (we hit them up on a Saturday and the breads still felt warm out of the oven and soft). Think about this place next time you want your fruit to taste real, and your produce to have been harvested that day, not held in some distributor's refrigerator unit.

This farmer market has been here for over two years and it is still growing, with a current mixture of hot food and different options for your shopping needs. I come here weekly to see what different types of fruits or vegetables are in season and also look for new recipes from the vendors. They also have $5 flowers that are fresh. The hummus booth is extremely popular and it is great because you're able to taste test or try a variety of what's available. The bread guy is also good too, my go-to is the squaw bread and cinnamon roll bread. It is open weekly, rain or shine. Don't miss out!

You can't miss him!…read more It's the first stand at the Saturday Ferry Farmers Market in San Francisco by Gott's Roadside. Cesar is 'him' as the longtime seller of a variety of citrus fruits, avocados, and passion fruits locally grown... well, Riverside is in California. This grower sells Valencia oranges, a daisy and golden nugget mandarins, oro blanco grapefruits, and pomelos, which are my normal purchases here. It is difficult to shop at farmers' market these days as the days of trying samples before buying are gone. So are the options of picking your own fruits and vegetables. He still allows me to bag my own mandarins and oro blancos since he knows that I will buy whatever I touch. A good indicator of a vendors' produce quality is the amount of wholesale purchases that he or she makes. The stacks of boxes that are curbside are usually stacked up high on Saturdays as resellers and restaurants come to pick up their orders. He is the only stand that sells fresh, locally grown passion fruits. He does accept credit cards too in case you are cash light. One of my must stops especially during mandarins season.
