The architecture alone stands out: lots of glass and steel, tons of natural light, and a very open, airy feel. Even when it's busy (which it often is), it doesn't feel cramped or chaotic. Platforms are clearly numbered and well marked, and the electronic displays make it easy to see exactly what's coming next without stress. What I really appreciate is how practical everything is. There are shops, food options, and services everywhere, from sit-down restaurants to quick takeaway spots. Even better: each platform has its own small kiosk, so you don't have to hike back to the main hall just to grab a coffee, snack, newspaper, or last-minute essentials before boarding. It's also a major international hub -- you'll see plenty of intercity and international trains heading to destinations across the Netherlands and beyond, which makes transfers pretty smooth if you're changing trains. Overall, Utrecht Centraal manages to be massive, modern, and efficient all at once -- not an easy combination. Whether you're just passing through or starting your journey here, it's one of the best-designed and most user-friendly train stations in the country.

If you choose the right exit, then you are pretty much in the clear since it's close by to a huge indoor mall and a 10 minute walk to the old city. I'm pretty impressed with this train station . . . it's like a cleaner Moynihan train hall!

I asked if they could possibly try to manage an early checkin, and Sally at the front desk said she'd try to do what she could. She managed to get us in at 10AM, which is even before normal guest checkout! I don't know how she managed it, but it was such a relief to be able to lay down and recover from the 15 hours of travel. The room was great, the wifi was free and strong (and didn't do that awful thing that hotels often do, where you have to sign in with your room number, and if you close your laptop, you get disconnected and have to go through that login again. It seems trivial, but as a computer programmer, it's a real nuisance.) The included breakfast buffet was lovely, and they even offered to print out my train tickets that the conference organizer emailed me and I stupidly forgot to print out before leaving. No charge. I absolutely love this place, and would gladly stay there again. The front desk staff was always friendly and enormously accommodating (and Sally is an absolute rock star). The fact that they didn't nickel-and-dime over small things like wifi and printing stuff out was a welcome relief from large hotel chains that want to charge you for every tiny thing. The single thing I do wish was different is that the bathroom lights are very dim, which makes it difficult to put on makeup. If you have a lighted travel mirror, you may want to bring it for this hotel. (If they added one of those lighted, adjustable makeup mirrors to their rooms, it would be absolute perfection.)

Getting there is perhaps slightly more difficult because it is in an old town centre, but a cab will always get you there. Friendly and helpful staff. The interior of the building is rather lacking in charm considering the building and location, but it still looks high end enough (looks, not 'is'). The rooms look comfortable and high end on a superficial level, but on closer inspection it is all rather tired and cheap. The rooms do seem spacious and have practically all facilities and plenty of pillows. The beds are in the small side and seem to cater to heavier people rather than people with a healthy BMI. As is standard in continental hotels, a shower, but it is fine. Considering the size of the rooms they could have easily made room for a bath and give customers a choice of showering or bathing (especially at that price). Breakfast is by far the biggest let down. The seating is as if you are at a mid-market café at a busy train station. The choice of food is a complete level with a lack of warm choices. I do not understand European hotels with their emphasis on pastries and sweet things for breakfast (at least this is in keeping with their beds aimed at bigger customers). I would have liked more choice, more warm food and more savoury. Also more comfort and better eye for detail.

As I was opening my room door, the girl in reception was bringing them to me. The hand wash and body lotion smell great. I didn't try the shampoo nor conditioner as I brought my own. I have an issue with one of the coffee machines in the restaurant. It was broken the whole time I was there, a total of seven nights. This caused a long line at the other coffee machine at the restaurant. The breakfast buffet provided plenty including toast with chocolate sprinkles which is a typical Dutch treat. Bring a water bottle to refill as the lobby area has still and sparkling water. You can borrow an umbrella through a device at the lobby that lets you have it free for 48 hours. You release it with a credit card. The location is great. You have the mall at walking steps with food courts and many stores, including supermarkets. The huge train station is a five-minute walk. My room had a mini fridge, a safe, and an iron. I found the floor on the shower a bit slippery. I had leftovers from an expensive meal in Amsterdam. Tour guide said the attendant at bar will be glad to microwave it. She didn't for liability reasons. The food went to waste unfortunately.

The carpet in my room was packed with dirt, dust, and dozens of stains. The furniture had chips and cracks, and it was covered in a visible layer of dust, too. The towels were stained. The wall had weird drippy stains. The air conditioning vent was, like everything else, covered in dust. My throat was sore by check-out day. Sometimes they gave me 3 towels for the day, sometimes 4. They didn't refill the toiletries if I only used 1/2 a bottle; they just put it back in the row. When I used a glass for water, they didn't wash it, they just put it back in place. They didn't replace the sheets. They didn't always take out the trash. What did they do when they cleaned? My feeling is: this place is losing money and trying to pinch pennies everywhere it can (except Wifi; Wifi is free here and everywhere in Utrecht). My favorite was the empty minibar in the room. You have to ask for the items you want in advance. In the meantime, you get a mini-fridge that isn't quite cold enough to store food safely. Their "business center" is a computer and printer in the corner, but you need to place an order to print more than 1 page, and there's a charge per page. Breakfast is €20. Delicious breads and spreads, yogurt and granola, sausages, bacon, cheese, and mini muffins. They have a machine that makes nice espresso drinks. That was good. And the lobby was pleasant. By the way, for those booking in 2017: there is major construction taking place on 2 sides of the building and a highway on the 3rd. You're surrounded by piles of sand, concrete, more dust, and speeding cars and bikes. Creepy underpass to get to the hotel itself: not single gal-friendly. Do yourself a favor and pay that same price for a room east of the station, in the center proper.
