I like the various niches set up for you to exercise including a large studio for dancercise-style classes, a smaller room for yoga with barre along the back wall, and a main, and secondary weights and resistance machines room. Note this gym is on the second level not the ground floor--the latter is where office spaces for the Parks and Recreation department, spacious changing room complexes with lockers, sauna and steam rooms, and showers are located. Additionally a hallway on the upper level (where people do stretches on mats) overlooks the tennis complex --a great spot for people watching or game watching distraction while stretching. I like the classy clientele here and the friendly front desk staff. They offer small towels if you like to sit in the sauna or steam room. Late in the evenings towards closing you get the football team from the high school. Weekend mornings you get the middle-aged crowd. Pick your times judiciously! My peeve is that they do not have T-Rex pull up stations, I paid $50 less at a YMCA in Los Angeles that had a full room of T-Rex band stations, and a weighted rope swinging work out. Neither available here. Nor weighted smaller balls and slider pads for pilates type exercises. So the BI Rec Center has rather limited weights equipment--more standard and traditional-- while I do give props for it being well-maintained and cleaned. There are at least three cable machines. In the summer I have joined on a monthly basis for outdoor lap swimming. It's a limited size pool but hey I could usually find a lane for myself --no sharing-- to swim outdoors. Afternoons are when kids come in, but mornings are wonderful to do lap swimming as adults. For BI residents, there is no surcharge to start a month-basis membership and that is the best way I found to do this gym as I could get membership during the dark winter months when immersion in sauna and steam room make a huge quality of life difference.

Are you an elitist? Do enjoy being dressed down by an arrogant staff? If so, you'll love it here…read more I'll provide two examples from my multi-year experience and you can make the call as to whether you're a 'fit'. Corrective Action While Working Out ============================ As unusual as this may sound, I like to rotate reps between 2 or 3 machines in the same general area... attempting to do 2-3 sets. It usually takes about 10 minutes and then I wipe down the machines and move on to the next activity. Well, I guess the expectation is you are expected to constantly wipe down the machines as you sweat or face a public scolding from the staff mid-workout. This is exactly what happened as I was lifting weights on a particularly slow day with few other guests in attendance. I was using two machines side-by-side in the midst of my second set when a staff member appeared. She proceeded to dressed me down for failing to wipe down the first machine. As I tried to explain, she raised her voice and made it an issue to alert the few people in attendance... it was also the first time I attempted to cancel my membership. However, a manager quickly apologized for the 'over zealousness' of the employee so I decided to continue on... No Dogs Allowed - Except Ours... ============================ The next example happened on my final visit. There is a gated courtyard with a dog house, dog bowls and toys. Naturally I figured it was a nice place for my dog to wait while I worked out. However, I never assumed. I asked before checking in each time if there would be any issue and routinely was told 'no problem'. For the first 5 or 6 times, it was a pleasant experience for both of us. However, one Saturday after asking and getting the okay from the desk employee, I got my dog set up in the courtyard and began working out. A few minutes later, I came back to check on him. As I opened the door, a staffer abruptly started telling me I was 'breaking the rules' and that 'dogs were not allowed in the facility'. I asked why I wasn't informed on any of the previous occasions or this time for that matter. She said didn't know why as it was a policy and that she was 'sure I understood as others might want to use the courtyard'. Apparently a Boston Terrier puppy on a leash is too threatening for others to share the same courtyard.. fine. However, they have a large dog that roams the halls and is clearly approved... When I asked why this exception was acceptable, she immediately responded that it was one of the staff's dogs and I should not to be confused with this policy. She graciously told me she 'would allow me' to leave my dog this time but not to repeat my mistake. in the future. I figured things just couldn't get worse, I was wrong. The rudeness continued when I came back to check on my pup again. The staffer made a point of snidely pop in and ask 'how's he doing?'. Upon finishing my work-out, I went to the front desk to cancel my membership. The same employee that checked me in immediately made a point of informing me of the dog policy. I asked her why she hadn't said so when I checked in? She replied 'I didn't know'. Apparently nobody did... The employee said she needed to get a more senior staff member before I could cancel. She returned with the very same employee who had 'counseled' me on the dog policy. I told her I was done with being part of a club with a double standard and an attitude that put customers last. She told me she 'was sorry I was having a bad day' to which I responded 'I wasn't until you ruined it'. As it was the first of the month, I told her I expected not to be billed again. She told me that 'wasn't the policy' and that I 'should expect to be billed again' and was 'free to use the club the whole month'. I asked for the owner of the club so I could take it up with her/him... to which she got a big smile on her face and said 'that's me!'
