Our seats were far away in 306 section. It was not that bad leaving the parking lot as we chatted inside after the show. This is a mega church that holds 4500 or more for a concert.

Before covid, we liked going Saturday at 5, so our Sundays were free. Now they just have Sunday services, 2 of them. Covid also ruined the live animals at Christmas which was really cool. We have become a little irritated with 2 pastors and their liberal ideals. Although they can't promote politics, it is blatantly clear who they support. 2 sermons were about the upcoming election. Church is not the place. We are upset enough to look elsewhere.

I found the preaching excellent, the music likewise, and there are numerous and varied opportunities for spiritual growth. However, I must rate the church "average" for one reason: the Senior Pastor jet-sets all over the world and tries to dress it up with a "stained glass" excuse of "carrying the gospel hear, near and far." In fact, I think he's likely OUT of the country more than he is IN it. On weekends he preaches, he tells the congregation about weekends he was absent; stating he just returned from South America, Indonesia, Africa, Sri Lanka, wherever! Anyone with any degree of familiarity with foreign travel can easily discern that this activity has to cost in the hundreds of thousands of dollars annually when the frequency is considered. There is airfare, ground transportation, food, lodging and miscellaneous expense associated with this kind of a lifestyle. It is dressed up in the "stained glass" excuse of "carrying the gospel here, near and far." (I would say "near" is a better idea; there have to be tens of thousands within the outer limits of the church locally who could benefit from the gospel and/or the expenditure of funds this travel entails.) The church is about to change Senior Pastors; the new one takes office September 1. However, the old one is "transitioning" into a role in which he will continue this lifestyle. If anything, I expect he'll do more of it. I simply cannot support this, and In my opinion, it is simply shameless jet-setting on someone else's dime. For this reason, I don't pledge and must rate the church "average" even though "excellent" would otherwise be in order.

Good Shepard is a great candidate for us because It's ELCA and it's very close to our home. That is why we were eager to visit. The church is growing, as demonstrated by the large building project underway in spring 2016 during our visit. However, attendance was light. The service was entirely-bulletin based which made it easy to participate without getting lost in a hymnal. Music was traditional, under the leadership of a talented music director. She led most of the songs, in Soprano, as the congregation listened. There was very little congregational participation in the music, Two pastors led the service. The lead pastor with a heavy, low base tone, lead the mechanics of the service while a younger pastor with a Minnesotan lilt pastor gave the lesson. It was Lent during our visit and the lesson focused on methods of prayer, which was well timed. We're used to very traditional hymnal-driven services and very contemporary services. This church was neither -- so we'll likely continue our search. If you have young children, tho, you may find that the new addition to their building is the beginning of a large commitment to youth and Sunday school. God bless!
