Spirit Garage - Summer Sundays at the Lake Harriet Bandshell

Spirit Garage is a comfortable place that values individuals and independent thought. As someone…read morethat wandered away from organized religion after high school (for the same reasons, many people reject faith entirely), I found myself longing for an authentic church community. I've met a great group of people not only studying and questioning religious doctrine through today's lens but also living their beliefs in earnest, as imperfect humans striving towards peace, justice, compassion, and understanding, and although on the fringe, still worthy of God's grace. Pastor Holly is very cool. She begins each service with a centering poem and stresses that "all means all" not only in word but in practice. There are now five different bands, so each week is a different experience with many types of music for you to enjoy from rock to folk and more, including one group that has a clogger! There are local coffee and snacks as well as an art table, and participation is optional depending on one's personal comfort level. Although the format is similar to regular church service, it takes place at the Hook and Ladder Theatre, is stripped down, casual, and "church" just really doesn't cut it. I've also enjoyed events outside of a typical church format, from sharing a meal or taking part in several book discussions. We've read about other religions, dissected "scary church words," even reading secular works that also have significance and talk about how our personal experiences shape our viewpoint. Coming up, we are reading "Red State Christians" by a local author, and I can't wait to continue on this journey with new friends.

I was visiting MN to officiate a wedding and being away from my own congregation I always try to visit somewhere else. Remember that this was one person's - a pastor no less - perspective and if you are looking for a church, you must give it more than one or two visits. Spirit Garage was a good overall experience and if i were looking for a community it would warrant a return trip or two. The things I enjoyed - The band was solid. Most bands do not pull off doing secular songs very well, but they were solid; - Leadership was diverse in terms of male/female; - Pastor was talking to this community; - Casual feel - Multigenerational - Easy parking - Theologically grounded Stuff that didn't jive with me - Where are all the brown people? I understand this is MN and might be why I would not move here, but there were only three non-White folks in the space of 70-80 people. - Hard to create talk back in a theater style setting. Everyone is facing forward so are not looking at each other. Again, one visit so check it out for yourself.

I've been coming each week and the messages keep getting better. The parking lot is huge but it gets cleared out pretty quick after the sermons are done. Entire service lasts 1- 1.5 hours. Would definitely recommend if looking for a new non-denominational church!

It can get lonely and defeat the purpose of trying to go to a mega church. *I dunno emoji goes here* I'm a lone parent with a toddler, I came here for resources first and foremost and I found them. That is a big plus and I feel so blessed and fortunate. The main pastor, he is pretty conservative by todays standard, however, I have to appreciate that now days when a lot of churches seem to be bending to cater to the masses. He is authentic and non apologetic about what is on his heart. For that he gets props from me on the passion he holds for Christ and trying to pass that on to those who are listening. The only thing that truly stinks about Grace is the traffic. *annoyed emoji goes here* Big church - lots of people and their cars. Gotta come early and leave early to bypass it. Plus one parking lot has been closed for a bit. Wish they knew what sitting in a hot car does to my toddlers patience and my nerves. BUT Try them out for a at least a few Sunday's and pray about it if this is your new church / community. Be blessed!

Shame on you. My church in North Hollywood had a 40 piece professional orchestra, animals, professional narrators and professional recording vocalists and charged NOTHING to PROVIDE AN EVANGELICAL OUTREACH TO THE COMMUNITY. Shame on you Wooddale. Chislers.

I found the preaching excellent, the music likewise, and there are numerous and varied opportunities for spiritual growth. However, I must rate the church "average" for one reason: the Senior Pastor jet-sets all over the world and tries to dress it up with a "stained glass" excuse of "carrying the gospel hear, near and far." In fact, I think he's likely OUT of the country more than he is IN it. On weekends he preaches, he tells the congregation about weekends he was absent; stating he just returned from South America, Indonesia, Africa, Sri Lanka, wherever! Anyone with any degree of familiarity with foreign travel can easily discern that this activity has to cost in the hundreds of thousands of dollars annually when the frequency is considered. There is airfare, ground transportation, food, lodging and miscellaneous expense associated with this kind of a lifestyle. It is dressed up in the "stained glass" excuse of "carrying the gospel here, near and far." (I would say "near" is a better idea; there have to be tens of thousands within the outer limits of the church locally who could benefit from the gospel and/or the expenditure of funds this travel entails.) The church is about to change Senior Pastors; the new one takes office September 1. However, the old one is "transitioning" into a role in which he will continue this lifestyle. If anything, I expect he'll do more of it. I simply cannot support this, and In my opinion, it is simply shameless jet-setting on someone else's dime. For this reason, I don't pledge and must rate the church "average" even though "excellent" would otherwise be in order.
