Otterspool Waste Centre is great if you have stuff you want to recycle or get rid of - absolutely brilliant if you are moving house. They accept most household materials, such as batteries, cardboard, glass, furniture etc. and even televisions which is a bonus. The only downside is that they don't accept any plastic which can be annoying. There's loads of different skips for you to throw your stuff in, each is signposted for each type of material. If you get confused, just ask the friendly staff in the office who will point you in the right direction. read more

Is there anything more satisfying than going to the dump? Anywhere else in life, you'd be frowned upon for hurling furniture into household appliances so they smash into jagged plastic shards that you don't tidy up, but here you're actually helping the environment. It's like if you found out burgers make you healthy. I could happily spend all day throwing things at other things here. It's incredibly cathartic. Even leaving it behind is terrific since when you get home you notice the huge space in your house that used to be occupied by a cumbersome piece of junk. God, I'm gushing. Otterspool dump is an excellent place. When I first saw the signpost after moving to this area I never imagined having to use it, but since then I have been several times. At Otterspool I have been able to dispose of old TVs, furniture, cardboard boxes after moving house. The dump is big so there is plenty of room to park up and throw out your junk. It used to be a good experience but lately, with the vast increase in the number of vehicles on the road everywhere you go, it often gets blocked with too many cars and vans visiting.The non-recyclable skips (numbers 16 and 17) are often cordoned off or difficult to get at when you have to dump black domestic bin bags that you didn't need to do when there was a weekly collection. read more
