For our first morning in Genoa, hubby was hoping for what he's used to...eggs, potatoes, and bacon…read moreor sausage. What we soon realized is that breakfast in Italy primarily consists of pastries and coffee. They definitely don't eat heavy breakfast foods like Americans do which is why we had a hard time, at least in a smaller city like Genoa, to find what we were looking for. Pastries it is. TripAdvisor seems to be king in Europe...Yelp is rarely used. Caffetteria Orefici was not listed on Yelp but hubby found them on TripAdvisor. This little cafe is a one-man operated shop with only a few small tables as well as a narrow counter. English is not spoken or understood here so we had to point to what we wanted. Behind the counter were about 5-6 different kinds of pastries, about 2 of each. They looked old and dry so we thought they were just for display. After picking a few items, we were surprised he pulled them out from behind the counter. There was a menu on the wall for drinks. Hubby ordered a cappuccino and being that I'm pregnant, I selected a decaf option, the cappuccino decaffeinato-d'orzo-ginseng-soia. The cappuccinos were delicious and pastries were good. The strawberry croissant with cream is what I ordered for myself and it was the best of all pastries we got. The cream was so good! I believe it may be freshly made. Our 3 pastries and 2 drinks cost €6 which is about $6.50. Such a great deal!

However, some opted to be added to the dinner reservation list. The restaurant is very busy, and waitstaff are bustling around. There was a sizable lunch group, so they can accommodate large groups. Everything we had was delicious. They are part of the "slow food" movement, and the dedication showed in their food. We ordered: Lasagna - I've never had a lasagna like this. Very, VERY thin sheets of pasta supporting layers of tomato and pesto sauce. The portion size was on the smaller side. Fantastic. Pesto - When in Genoa, you must try pesto! Perfectly al dente tossed in a vibrant and fresh pesto sauce. Seafood pasta - special of the day ~ I think this had mussels and local veggies, was pretty good. Fish + potato - This was a toss-up, but a unique (at least to us) combination. Fish flesh is mixed with mashed potatoes. Prominent fish flavor and heavy on the tongue, likely due to fat/flavor added to the potatoes. Finished with a dessert (pine nut cake) that we honestly could have done without. Highly recommend the lasagna and pesto.
