I want to like this place, I really want to. The people who worked there were nice enough, and the…read morepeople who stayed there were fantastic, but there was so much that was wrong.
First off, the things that were alright: It was tucked away off the street, but that was really alright because it seemed like an extra means of security. After a certain time at night you need to get buzzed into the courtyard to be let into the building, where you also have to be buzzed into. That's fine, I'm ok with it. The hostel is on the third floor of a building with no elevator. Didn't love that, but I could manage fine. There are 2 common rooms--one open to the public and another that takes a key card to get into. Beer, liquor, coffee, and water are available for purchase, as are S-Bahn and M-Bahn tickets, and for a discounted price to customers. Wifi is available, the rooms are large, the bathrooms and showers are enough that I was never waiting for shower or toilet. Sheets are new and clean for every bunk.
Second, what was wrong with all of this: The stairwell and open common room reeked of cigarette smell, even though the windows were thrown wide open. So it wasn't smoke clogged, but the smell was pungent. I'm sure this is fine for some, as plenty of the residents were smokers and taking advantage and having a blast drinking and partying to the blaring music on the speakers, but for someone with asthma like myself, this was not OK. The second common room that required the key card was a buffer between the smoking and the dorm rooms, so that one didn't smell, and the dorm rooms were completely smoke free. There were plenty of couches, a foozeball table, and a TV that played movies on a loop, so this was a fun spot to just sit and talk with the other residents, charge our phones and computers, or jump on the wifi because it was fairly strong here. The wifi was incredibly temperamental, so that was frustrating, and I couldn't even get a signal from my bunk. Our room had eight bunks and two outlets, hence we sat out in that second common room to charge our stuff. It was also uncomfortably muggy. We opened our windows, but as they opened into a courtyard, there was absolutely no way to get a draft moving through our room. The air just hung still and hot, as there is no fan. The showers were push showers, which is fine and I can deal with them, but after about 3 pushes the water is incredibly hot; dare I say scalding? That's an exaggeration, but it is uncomfortably hot. And I was worried they wouldn't be warm.
The place was clean, but smelly. The people were great, but it was obnoxious. Nothing was stolen and the hostel served it's purpose. For the price, I suppose it should get more stars, but I really can't bring myself to do it. I wouldn't stay here again, but I'm not this kind of hostel's ideal clientele, either. If you're a smoker and aren't relying on staying connected with the world, this place is probably perfect for you. For me, not so much.
