The dead bugs between screens and windows need cleaning out. Pillows and linens need replacing. Not dirty just worn out. The notes everywhere are tacky. A folder welcoming you with cabin rules and whatnot would be better. The main house and across from it look like hoarding homes. The octagon is closed to visitors. We only saw the property owner the day we arrived. No welcome to Shire in the Woods. It was "ya got a credit card?" There is so much potential for this place. Loved all the chickens and turkeys walking around. The horses were covered in flies and seemed miserable. The smell was pungent but it was pretty warm. Ticks were bad. We all got ticks even with spray. Would I go back? I would love to if they'd put some TLC back into the places. The pictures on their website are so old. The cost was reasonable for what was provided. Again, it wasn't horrible but it could use some love from the owners.

It's important to know a lot of the options with high rankings may not reflect the kind of lodging you desire so do your homework. We wanted cabin style lakeside housing that was simple yet provided options.... Appeldoorn's delivered. We rented cabin 1 which is 300 feet from the water. They have a sandy beach with two docks and water toys for kids including kayaks, paddle boats, a blob and in water slide. Throw in a sandy beach that is sifted daily you have a great place to enjoy this massive lakes beauty. The front desk is extremely helpful and they have a lot of convenience store items available for reasonable price. They also arrange fishing chartered and have rental equipment weather permitting. We also dined at the resort for breakfast and dinner and were impressed with the quality and originality of the food. The dining options are closed Monday and Tuesday so you will need to explore the local area. They have four varieties of housing and they all seem pretty awesome, we are definitely planning to return!

The current event coordinator, Mariah, knocks everything she does of of the ball park. I was here for another wedding, and I was in for a huge surprise. There were many improvements, too many to list! The new wedding area is perfectly located. A permanent Arbor is there for the couple to decorate as they wish, or not. The lakeside now has 2 docks, many aquatic amenities, and a great sandy beach. Even a lakeside bar! I could go on and on, but you need to see this place on Mille Lacs to really appreciate it. The lodge was great, super rustic, room was comfortable. Not fancy, but we wanted laid back and comfortable on a quiet lake and that's exactly what we got.
