When my friend invited me to "art jam", I panicked. The last time I picked up a paint brush was in middle school. For the longest time I told myself I couldn't paint, I was not artistic enough. Acrylics, oil paints, those terms just went past my head... Whoosh!
But it was a new year -- my friend had asked me at the beginning of January 2016 -- and I wasn't going to turn down an opportunity for a fresh start. New year, new challenge!
Oscary Wine & Art is located in the heart of Soho, above the PMQ, hidden in a side alley along Shing Wong St (across from Common Ground). It's a bit of a trek to get up there, especially if you're coming from Central or Sheung Wan MTR -- you can either take the Mid-Level escalator all the way up to Staunton St, head down Staunton until you pass the PMQ on your right and see a bunch of stairs going up Shing Wong St. OR you can get off at Sheung Wan exit E2, and make the slow ascent up Aberdeen St, which...actually isn't too bad, and is perhaps faster than taking the escalator. You choose.
What is art jamming? It is a social gathering where you bring your own choice of art/photo/painting you would like to paint/recreate, with the help of an instructor. You are more than welcome to bring your own snacks and beverages (*cough* a nice bottle of red) to bring out your inner Picasso, Renoir or Van Gogh.
Upon arrival, you will be assigned an easel, given a blank canvas. It's best to bring 3-4 options to paint from, just in case it's too complicated and difficult to complete within the time frame of 3 hours (according to the instructor). When I finally settled into my station, apron on, photo attached to my easel, the instructor advised me on how to go about painting my masterpiece and helped bring over a starting color palette for my blue skies.
"Start the sky blue here at the top, then keep going lighter until you hit white at the bottom. Then go all the way across," she explained, while creating the foundation for my blue gradient. My jaw dropped in fascination. She made it look so easy... If this was the easiest step, what next? Little by little, I added more colors to my canvas. Slowly but surely, my painting took form.
3 hours is a lot of time, but you do have to factor in the time it takes for layers of acrylic paints to dry. They also have hair dryers on hand in case you're rushed for time. There is a cart of paints and brushes right outside the front door, for you to restock and fix any colors gone wrong -- "Ah! I contaminated my white with this bright red!"
Also, don't be afraid to ask for help. The instructors are there to guide you - on mixing colors and using different brush sizes and strokes for different effects. If you're feeling stuck, like "I don't know what to do next!", feel free to flag them down for assistance. When you're finally done with your painting, they will attach a ribbon at top of the canvas for you to display your masterpiece at home or wherever you choose.
