The room had no AC so we had to keep the single window open and the fan blowing. We could hear cars coming and going, plus cigarette smoke drifted up to our room all through the night. It was too hot to close the window. The shower had mold. Our bed was hard (not just firm, but hard) and the pillows were flat. The room looked and felt dated. Breakfast was in this odd looking room with very uncomfortable chairs. I think it's supposed to look like a forest. The buffet had many hot and cold options, however, and everything tasted great. Staff was also outstanding. . We had drinks in the bar downstairs that was also quirky. I guess it used to be a church. The stone walls were interesting and the beer was great. We were there mid-afternoon so it was fairly quiet. The bartender checked on us a few times, but left us alone to relax. We only stayed one night and it wasn't a comfortable one for us. We did not sleep well with the traffic noise and smelling smoke from whoever would stand below our window and smoke at all hours of the night. I don't recommend and I certainly won't return.

When we arrived on our first day the front desk staff were able to check us in early and even upgraded our room to a castle view which was an exciting surprise! Our room was comfortable although one thing to keep in mind is that the hotel does not have air conditioning in the hallways and rooms, although it was cool enough at night to keep our windows open and the rooms do come with a small fan. The complimentary breakfast in the morning was very nice and the pastries (especially the chocolate croissants!) were delicious and a wonderful way to start our days before exploring Kilkenny. The hotel does have complimentary parking, which was extremely useful. We parked our car at the hotel when we first arrived and didn't end up moving it until checking out two days later since everything was so walkable in the city. I would highly recommend staying at the River Court Hotel!

The only complaint about the room is that they need to regrout the tub area sometime soon. The front desk agent was nice enough to bring extras pillows and was very friendly. Dinner was absolutely delicious! Be warned though, skip lunch because the portions are large! The menu is different than what they have listed on their website. Our choices for the main course were either a pork, chicken or salmon dish. You could also get a steak for $4.50 euros extra. A quarter bottle of wine was included for each adult and the kids got soda bottles. The main highlight was Ian who has to be one of the hardest workers I've every seen! He worked in the dining room as well a the bar and literally never stopped rushing back and forth to take care of around 25 guests. He was very professional and the service was excellent! The reason I'm not giving this place 5 stars is that I thought breakfast could have been a bit better and we had an unpleasant exchange with the younger male desk agent that worked the evening shift. Lastly, just be aware that they are a couple of miles from downtown. Parking downtown is free after 6pm, but you can also take their preferred taxi for 8 euros. The non preferred taxi charges 11 euros for 2 adults, so definitely use theirs if you aren't driving.

I ended up booking a bed in one of the 6 bed, female dorms for just €53, paying a tiny deposit online and the rest up front on arrival. The hostel does not take credit cards so bring cash or visit the nearby atm before you check in! I was greeted by a really friendly, laid back guy who gave me a key and door code as well as a run through of house rules and where to find everything. I was also upgraded to a smaller 4 bed dorm room as they were obviously fairly quiet and I made my way up to check out the room which was basic but clean. It consisted of two single beds, a bunkbed, a large open wardrobe and a sink and mirror in the corner. On the first night there were just two of us is the room and the second night we were joined by another two Spanish girls. In my third night I had the whole place to myself! Facilities in the hostel were basic but I was never left wanting. Each floor had a small, double cubicle bathroom and a separate shower room with two showers, and a sink and mirror. Towels can be provided for an extra couple of Euro, just ask on reception on check in! On ground level there is a lovely sitting room with big comfy couches and a fireplace, a really great spot to sit with a good book or to make new friends. There is an ancient laptop here that can be used by residents if they need it, lots of tourist guides and history of the town and a handful of board games. This is locked by 10 or 11. The kitchen consists of everything you could need, a decent dining area, a cooker, microwave, large countertops, a huge fridge and freezer. Customers can use all of these facilities but are asked to finish cooking by 10pm to ensure that smoke alarms don't go off and wake up residents! Staff here are super friendly and have great insights into what's happening in the town and recommendations for events, sightseeing, live music, pubs and restaurants. Check out is at 10am but staff offered to keep my bags while I was out exploring on my final day. Did I mention the dog? There is also the SWEETEST, most adorable little schnauzer having a snooze at reception from time to time which absolutely made my weekend! :D

Major downer was we were there the day before the hurling championship (who knew) which meant PARTAY time. Many of the hostels guests did not quiet down until 4 in the morning, and they were very rowdy. Hostel owners did nothing to quiet them down - it must have kept the whole place up!
