The Orvis flagship store continues to be among the best reasons to spend some time in Manchester (right up there with the Orvis outlet store, the Northshire bookstore and Pearl's Place restaurant). The flagship store carries all of the brand's best-known and new clothing items along with fishing and outdoor gear (you can get fly fishing lessons here, too). It's beautiful two-level store, roomy, outdoorsy with a knowledgeable and friendly staff. They welcome dogs, too! They have periodic sales, which we checked out on our most recent visit, and that's a good thing since Orvis clothing is of very high quality but not inexpensive. We are still wearing pants and shirts purchased a decade ago, and they have held up well. We also love their huge fireplace, a great place to sit and get warm when it's cold out (not like the 90-degrees when we stopped by). Men's clothing is on the first floor, women's on the second. We stop in at Orvis's Main Store every time we are in town. The staff is always friendly, my husband can not leave there from under an hour and refreshing his wardrobe seasonally great quality is price less even our dog Cooper loves it there. In the summer bring your Orvis cardigan because it gets chilly. In the winter they have the fire place on and if you bring the grand kids like we do, take pictures with Chester the Bear. We like supporting the company and their many good causes and we want to see them stay in business and remain the iconic place to visit for everyone. The Trout Mural is incredible. Next year our grand son is old enough to take Fly Fishing lessons with their school!!! read more

This is the second time that I have tried to order clothes from Orvis. Their clothes are all for fat people. If you are in any shape at all, it will be like wearing a tent. I am 5' 11" and weigh 165 lbs. The store is a great stop, and the employees are great. read more

If the Brawny man came to life, he would be shopping here. I felt manly in this store. It has just about everything under the sun for your outdoor endeavors. They even have live trout swimming in the store! A lot of stone and wood all over and a huge roaring fireplace. It seemed like a lodge from the set of Wolverine. You can find just about any gear or wardrobe items you may need for your next excursion. Custom made rifles, shotguns and fishing rods. Lots of fishing rods and tackle. This is apparently the mecca for fly fishing enthusiasts. They have anything you could possibly want and you can even make your own flies. Step out back to the ponds stocked with trout and learn the ways of the force. It was a pretty serene setting to see everyone casting out there. It would be a great place to take the kids if you are in the area. read more

Making this short. House fire in Dec 2017 required replacement of everything, including clothing. 2019 Purchased a wool cruiser jacket(mackinaw) by Orvis. In 2021 jacket sleeve tore at the elbow. Contacted Orvis they refused to replace. Had to patch it myself. Fabric under the patch continues to shred. This year, bigger patch. After spending that much money, Filson and J Peterman would have replaced. Poor quality. read more

My family and I have been coming to this Orvis for years; it's one of our favorite destinations in Manchester! Our dogs have always enjoyed the dog friendly atmosphere, as well as the variety of treats and toys. The building, grounds, and interior are just stunning as well! We also enjoy their dog related events, like dock diving. They annually hold a weekend in the fall where there's a cookout with free food and hot coffee and hot (non alcoholic) cider. It's always fun to visit and feed the trout as well! Pro tip-feed the trout in the pond a little further away-they splash a lot more than the slightly chonky and lazier big trout in the pond by the bridge! We've been pleased with everything we've picked up at Orvis over the years as well, very good quality! Orvis will continue to be one of our favorite destinations in Manchester :) read more

I was very excited to order a Barbour Prestbury jacket during their sale, but they canceled my order, and offered me a 20% coupon for my troubles. I visited the website and saw the same jacket on sale for a lesser discount after. Customer service emailed and said they were out of that color, but if that's the case, their website is not up to date at all, because I did see the same coat. Orvis claims to have a 100% customer satisfaction metric, but that has not been my experience. Update: Orvis was concerned i had a bad experience, and offered to let me buy a more expensive jacket from them instead. Classy. read more

I posted a negative review about their Presidential suede men's jacket being falling considerably short of being a quality product, esp for the price. Orvis is definitive country clothing that's thoroughly Vermont. Think of it as an upscale and inland L.L. Bean. Or maybe L.L. Bean is just a coastal, slightly lower grade Orvis... Everything is well made, durable, timeless and presented with a simple New England elegance that's an extension of the state itself. Fly rods and classic shotguns can be found alongside a huge selection of Barbour gear, as well as the Orvis knit staples along with random other gear like Viyella shirts and hiking boots. There's home stuff intermittently plopped down throughout the store. Note about this, some things are for sale, some aren't and it can be quite an exercise figuring out where the item in question might fall. Often the sales people aren't sure either. It's a great store for lingering, with a crackling fire near the entrance and food scattered about. Great for the sporting gentleman -- or the weekender who fancies himself one. read more

I have a fly rod that was purchased in 2007 from an Orvis retailer. The rod tip broke during a cast and I submitted the rod to Orvis for repair under the advertised warranty. It cost me 60 dollars to mail the rod and have the service performed. was contacted and told that the rod tip was irreparable and that this particular rod didn't fall under their 25 year warranty. I protested as this rod was specifically sold to me with the assurance from the retailer that it DID fall under this warranty. They returned my rod without the broken tip (now I can't even have it repaired by a local rodsmith) and offered no return on the $60 service fee (even though they didn't service the rod). To summarize : 1) Sold rod with supposed warranty advertised by retailer and later told by Orvis does not apply. 2) Even though a model and serial number was supplied with the online created service ticket, the online ticketing system DID NOT tell me that my rod was not covered under warranty. 3) They took my sixty dollars without performing ANY service to the rod. 4) They returned the rod without the broken piece and offered no additional discounts, repairs, or refunds for their mistake. 5) When I attempted to protest, the customer service team dismissed my concerns (said that I did NOT submit the rod with the broken tip, that I misunderstood the warranty program, blamed the retailer for misinforming). I have owned Fenwick, Shimano, TLO, G-Loomis, and other rods. I have submitted warranty work to each of these companies and NEVER encountered such a costly, prolonged, and helpful experience as I have with Orvis. I strongly recommend not purchasing Orvis fly rods for this reason. I hope I saved at least one other customer a headache. Happy fishing! read more

I wanted to praise the staff at the Orvis store in Manchester, VT especially Maria as they were fabulous in assisting us in getting a mens jacket shipped to us in Virginia overnight. It was a new item listed in the Orvis catalog but was already sold out everywhere except in 3 locations including Manchester. Maria was very knowledgeable about the product, sizing and how to get it to us in time. Just a little while ago they also helped us get an order of dog cookies, only found at the Vermont location for our pooch. This is the main store for Orvis. *To note: I am writing this as a catalog customer! I have dealt with these folks over the phone for years with great customer service! I first felt with the Orvis home office just when I was over ten trying to figure out what rod I wanted to save up and buy. I brought up in the southwest desert and far from any fly fishing shop. I did get on their catalog list and when the catalogs arrived it was like heaven to go through them. My dilemma was that I had to fly fish several for trout in several types of waters at the head waters of the Rio Grande, some small tributaries and some small high lake ponds. Just like the kid that travels past the 5&dime store that keeps looking in the window saving every dime for a fly rod! They helped me decide on a great fly rod, it was a "Western" 9 foot, 5 weight line fly rod. I love that they took the time way back when to help me figure this issue out. Oh, and this was not just over one phone call, I studied and had all of my questions lined up! Their customer service, knowledge and patience won me over. One of the best things was their 25 year warranty, I could not believe in my mind was that I would have that rod for over 25years. A number of years back, I had bottom tip piece of the rod fall out. Brought the rod in for repair, told them it might be out of warranty and I'd like to see what they could do. The rod was still very fishable, but it just did not have that little Orvis logo and the rod type. Stupid of me, but they took care of it, sent the rod to head quarters and had the rod back to me within about 4 days. I was blown away, that was worth the price of admission! Now, I'm big into fly fishing, and do a good number reviews of fly fishing places of colder waters places and stores, but Orvis home office has set the bar pretty high! **To note: They have a number of catalogs that they can send you. They understand if you don't have access to the internet and are in the backwoods fly fishing. The catalogs cover fly fishing, men's clothing, women's clothing, hunting (shot gun) clothing items and my favorite one for your puppy dog! Pros: ~ Top notch fly rods! ~ Top customer service! ~ Great quality products! ~ Knowledgable staff! ~ Great dependability, they have far exceeded what they have always told me. This place is awesome. It is in a huge building with a very masculine/outdoorsy/earthy feel to it. I would recommend going during the fall to get the full effect. The store is basically everything in the catalog. There is a huge central fireplace and they often have displays and food scattered throughout the store. I believe you can bring your dog in with you too... very cool. Of course if you hunt or fly fish this place is like heaven. This company sells some good quality products, at high prices, but has antiquated customer service and policies in this competitive e-commerce age. They charge for shipping and deduct money from any refund you'll receive for returned products. It took me ten minutes on their chat to find out if a wallet was made of leather. They spent my time trying to sign me up for a credit card and other up-sell tactics instead of answering my question. I ordered the wallet and paid 10.95 for shipping, enough to cover priority shipping but it was sent FedEx Smartpost which is snail mail (5-7 days). This store is a must visit while you are in Manchester. Even if you don't plan to buy any outdoor goods, this place is worth a look. It sums up the many outdoor things you can do in a small town like Manchester. It's fly fishing galore, hunting, hiking, seriously anything you can do in the mountains. Yet them make everyday stuff like dress shirts, ties, and blazers. I never owned anything from Orvis but the quality of the garments looked fantastic. It's like an enormous lodge with large fireplace. As soon as you walk in a large black bear stands tall waiting to greet you. There is a small trout pond in the back of the store. Outside, larger fish ponds and bridges await your eye. I went on a weekend where they had their large tent sale (Memorial Day weekend). All the stuff was reduced 50-00% off of store prices. Staff was eager to assist you at every corner. The upstairs has a great selection of ladies gear. read more

The store is easy to find and it has a great location near the Equinox resort and the Kimpton Taconic hotel. If you're into fly fishing and/or wing shooting, this location has the gear that you need. This is THE FLAGSHIP STORE for Orvis. The decor alone is worth the trip. Beautiful stained glass, a porch with rockers, and gorgeous wood paneling in the heart of the Green Mountains. They have a large parking lot, very helpful salespeople without being overbearing, large dressing rooms, and bathrooms. The shop is large and has departments for men, women, dogs, fishing, hunting, and home. Some of my favorite products that they carry are carry 4 corners rugs, exoffucio bug repellent clothing, dog beds, and fabulous wrinkle free shirts. Right down the street is their outlet which has a lot of great products too. I live in the area and everyone that comes to visit me raves about this store. read more

Don't ever do business with Orvis. I purchased 2 items costing over $300 from Orvis. They were inferior quality so I returned them using the instructions on their website and even spoke with customer service to go through each step. I mailed them back using the mailing label they provided to me... their printed out label. They told me that they didn't receive it. Then they said that the tracking number that they had provided was useless because they now shipped things cheaper and they can't even track their own packages or the one I sent them with their label on it. I received my order of a Tempur-Pedic® Deep Dish Dog Bed ( $398) and I'm very disappointed. Once we got it out of the box we noticed that the right cushion is very loose and hanging to the outside. This shouldn't happen with an almost 400$ dog bed!! The customer service answered: " I'm not able to see a problem in the pictures" and "Can you try readjusting the bolster, and you may need to remove it completely to get it fully straightened out, to see if this fixes the issue?" They expected me to solve the problem by myself!! I can send it back but have to pay for the return shipping for a damaged item! I will never shop at Orvis ever again. I, as well as most of my family, have used almost exclusively Orvis fly fishing gear for decades. We always shopped at Orvis because they are local, high quality, and always cared about their customers. Last September, I purchased a 5-weight Recon at an Orvis Outlet. 8 months later (in early May), it snapped in half during normal casting. After multiple calls to this outlet and Orvis headquarters, they refused to do anything about it. They instructed me I could have it repaired by them for $250-$300. Saying because it was an "Outlet Item" it had no warranty. I always shopped exclusively at Orvis because they stood by their products, however, I will be purchasing a Sage in the next few weeks unless Orvis makes it right. The rod they sold me (for over $300) broke 8 months later, obviously from a manufacturer defect, and they want to charge me $300 to fix it. I am probably going to use that $300 to purchase a Sage rod instead. Very disappointed in a once great company. read more

Orvis screens the reviews posted on their website! Make no mistake, Orvis sells some good quality products. But, don't be fooled. Do your research. Orvis has successfully protected its brand, partly by using the term "Imported" instead of "Made in China." You would think a $90 pair of gloves labelled "imported" would have been crafted in Italy. I have purchased higher quality gloves for $30, and the entire glove was made of leather, instead of using cloth on the back of the hand, as Orvis does in their $90 glove. I returned the gloves and submitted a review on the gloves. Orvis denied it. I resubmitted the review after removing much of the content. Orvis again refused to post it. This is late November, high-season for gloves. Don't trust their reviews, and watch out for the term "imported." read more

$500 for a duffel bag. Yes it lasted a good long time, but it was a gift from my school teacher father when I got out of the service. He spent $500 on a duffel bag specifically because the salesman touted their 100% unconditional warranty. After more than a decade of use, the canvas at one end split courtesy of airport baggage handlers. I contacted Orvis about an exchange... and was told the warranty is defects is materials and workmanship only! If you dig around enough on their website there is a SEPARATE warranty for luggage, not the 100% plastered all over their pages. Oh, but for a measly $60 + shipping, I can return it to see if they can repair it. If they decide they can't, they'll contact me about "options". Anyone want to bet that the option is replacing the bag with a new $500 Orvis? read more

I just want to talk about how nice these people are. My mother-in-law died last week and in her last year she just went crazy with catalogue orders, ordering all sorts of stuff that just sat in the closet and that she never used. Some of that was from Orvis and when I called to explain the situation they couldn't have been nicer, more helpful, or more understanding. They said that it was fine to send their items back so long as they were in the original condition we'd received them in, and that I could then get it credited back to her credit card, which the bank would then refund. Orvis transcends the kind of country style that you see on Upper West Siders - this is real gear used by real sportspeople. It happens to look good, also. Serious fly fishers and bird hunters will be at home here. This is NOT a place for the belly-hanging-out camo type. Orvis introductory fly fishing gear is good quality. Their gun room is quite small but the people are very knowledgeable. Orvis custom shotguns are good quality - not "bests" but very nice guns at a fair price. You have to ask, but nearby there is an Orvis shooting range where you can take lessons or have a gun fitted. Orvis service is superb, people very knowledgeable and while nothing is cheap, the prices are fair and the quality is there. read more

Orvis should be listed in the dictionary under "destination" if there is anything. I don't even fly fish, but the art and sport of it is well catered to here. I do have a dog, however, and Orvis' hunting dog products are very handsome. I can't think of another hunting/fishing store as good as this, so it gets my top rating. read more

Interesting company. I purchased two polo shirts from their online store. They were listed as large but were extremely large. I paid shipping charges and when I tried to return them I also had to paid to return them. When I tried to post a review about their rather ridiculous return policy. They refused to post my review.
