I had no idea that I was a fragrance freak until I happened upon Ortigia's Corallo (coral shell) cologne at a shop in Bologna. The fancy schmancy and very girly Italian boutique certainly wasn't the sort of shop I'd normally enter; I was simply piddling about while my wife shopped there for a few gifts to bring back from our holiday. But during my bored piddle, I sniffed around a display of fragrances and soon found myself soaring through an olfactory wonderland after catching a whiff of Ortigia's coral shell cologne. Part of this Sicilian toiletry brand's line of fragrances, this cologne is comprised of dry aromatic Mediterranean plants (helichrysum, cistus, wild fennel, rosemary, oregano, mint, thyme, nutmeg, pine, balsamic herbs, cypress tree musk and estragon). Unlike any other fragrance before it, Corallo seemed to take me to a much loved place in my childhood that I still can't quite put my finger on (which is kinda what I like about it). Anyway when the missus decided it was time to move our little retail expedition along, I came back down to reality and before I knew it was back in London with the memory of Corallo still lingering in my mind. Then, out one day in Chelsea, I ambled by Ortigia's Sloane Square outlet (there's an Ortigia shop on Marylebone High Street as well) and within seconds was in and out the door in a jiffy with a bottle of this musky liquid. The 100ml bottle of acqua di colonia set me back £40, which is roughly what it would have cost if I'd purchased the same bottle that first time in Bologna. Without having any sense of cologne and perfume prices, this seems to be good value for money. I really like how all of Ortigia's scents (such as pomegranate, almond and orange blossom) are made from natural and traditional ingredients that are indigenous to Sicily. All scents are available in a range of products such as drawer sachets, glycerine soap and scented crystals with prices starting at less than £5. The Corallo scent is wonderful. As a cologne, it is pleasant without being too perfume-y: masculine enough (more herbal and woody than floral) for a man but not so manly that women should avoid it. It is one of the most evocative smells I've ever come across. I'm strongly considering heading back to Sloane Square to pick up some more Corallo scented products. And I'm keeping the shop in mind for future gift purchases. read more
