Dr. David Wey Lee did an excellent job on my trigger thumb release surgery. After previous negative experiences with hand surgeons, I researched extensively and chose him based on both his credentials and strong patient reviews. Dr. Lee is professional, direct, and thorough. While he's clearly very busy, he explained the procedure and recovery process clearly enough that I went into surgery knowing exactly what to expect. I was extremely nervous about being awake during the procedure due to past experiences, but Dr. Lee and his team did a great job keeping me calm and comfortable throughout the surgery, which took about 7 minutes. I was able to move my thumb immediately afterward for the first time in over 3 months. My recovery was smooth and nearly painless. I only needed Aleve for a day or two, and the incision healed nicely. I greatly appreciate the care I received and highly recommend Dr. Lee for trigger finger or trigger thumb surgery. read more

I do not recommend this practice. They only gave us two options of care for my son's torn labrums. Went to Hopkins and got 4 total! We did PT for 18 months with no results. Then I called them to get medical records and had to go through some AI bs to request my own med recs and the non-english speaking guy on the phone said he would send a link and never did. I had no problems with the office visit. HOWEVER - the billing system and the AI system that you have to go through is TERRIBLE, They give you 15 numbers to write down. I have one hand in a cast and the other on the phone! In order to see the bill on line, I need the 15 digits - Well that is obviously difficult. The AI keeps asking for the same information over and over and over. AND - I checked at the checkout desk when I left the office and was told the bill was paid in full. I now hear that I owe another $139.xx. Do these people know what is going on? read more

Doctor Berg took the time to listen to my problem with my stiff knee and discussed treatment options and the solution we came up with seems to have fixed the problem. I didn't like him when I first met him years ago for a shoulder problem, but he gave me some good advice which saved me from shoulder surgery. I've been to this location a few times to see Dr Novak. He is in another location but it is much easier and closer to see him here. This is a pretty large office for OrthoVirginia. Dr Novak is super professional, he explains things very well in layman's terms and doesn't rush through the visit. He will answer any questions you have and I can't recommend him enough. He will be doing some surgeries on me very soon and I will update if necessary after that. All of the nursing staff and the surgery scheduler have been wonderful and easily reachable on the phone as well as in the office. If you need to see a doctor at Ortho Virginia and they are seeing patients in this office, I can't recommend it enough. Easy in, easy out! read more

Dr. Novak did not listen to me or answer my questions. If you're a woman, avoid this doctor at all costs. He said he would not operate and that I needed a partial knee replacement or just stay in pain. I went to another doctor at INOVA, Dr. Quinn, got the operation to remove my knee bone spurs six months ago and am now pain free and back to my normal life. I'm even doing a 15 minute mile on the elliptical! read more

This place billing department seems to have very incompetent staff. Instead of billing us they sent it straight to collections, they didnt wait for our insurance to process the bill. So my wife and I had to waste our time calling them, mind you the collections agency was more helpful than they were. their billing department need an overhaul. read more

I had a recent fall and tumble and I got a referral to come here. I was able to make a same day appointment. The receptionist on the phone was so friendly and nice. The check-in at the office was quick and easy. My wait was not too long. Once they took me to the back, the nurse helped me. She was patient, had great bedside manner and compassionate. The Doctor was very pleasant, upbeat and explained what was going on with my injury and to stay off my foot and let it heal. He explained everything in a way I could understand. The nurse afterwards was also very kind and nice. This is a pretty busy practice. You see all sorts of people, kids, seniors, you name it. What took this visit from a 4.5 star to a full 5 star, as I was sitting after everyone was gone, a nurse or Doctor asked if I was ok or being taken care of. Something to that effect. I said yes, I was being helped and I thanked her. Even though its busy, someone just stopped to see if I was ok. They take really good care of you and attentive to your needs. This is actually my 3rd time at this particular Ortho practice over the past 20 years. I was here many years ago for a foot injury. And another time for my shoulder. They have helped many athletes and you can see the pictures and signed/autographed sports jersey from players they have helped. They have helped me out with 3 separate injuries. (All oddly on the right side....ughhh!!) So if you pull something, sprain something, break something, this is your place. They will put you on the road to recovery!! read more

I am not one for posting reviews but feel I must post this review due to the impact on my life. I have had a nagging back issue for several years. I started to experience weakness, pain and numbness in my right leg. I decided to see Dr. Hughes, who ordered the MRI and informed me that the stenosis in my back was severe and needed to be addressed asap. PT and injections did nothing. We discussed surgery and although I was hesitant, Dr. Hughes did a great job of explaining the risks and benefits. The L3 to S1 Laminectomy was performed on September 3, 2024. When I woke up, the tingling, numbness, weakness and pain went away immediately, and I was up and walking the same day of surgery. I was almost in tears because of the relief. To be honest I didn't think they could fix it. It has been 12 days, and the difference it has made to me physically, mentally, and emotionally has been dramatic. I didn't realize how much the pain and weakness was affecting me other than the physical issue. The difference has been miraculous. I cannot thank Dr. Hughes, Jennifer, and the rest of the team enough. The professionalism, skill, and knowledge of their team has been exceptional. I would like to say if you are experiencing back issues like I was, please contact Dr. Hughes and his team at OrthoVirginia. They have several options to address your issue. If surgery is needed, their skills are impeccable and the relief you can experience is dramatic. read more

I'd been having neck pain for some time but it had begun to affect my hands and also my balance. I saw Dr. Hughes in the Fairfax office. They got me an MRI and diagnosed a severely pinched spinal cord. They were able to get me into surgery in 3 days. I began feeling better immediately after surgery and am continuing to improve. I am SO grateful to Dr. Hughes and the OrthoVirginia staff and the Inova Surgery Center for their quick action, excellent surgical outcome and ongoing support! I highly recommend Dr. Steven Hughes and OrthoVirginia. Their Fairfax office is wonderful. While the nurse and x-ray technician we worked with were wonderful and the x-ray technician tried to keep us upbeat and made us laugh our experience with the PA Julie Crocker was horrific. My friend went into this office for severe back pain lasting for days while I accompanied her and the PA was dismissive, condescending, and refused to offer any sort of relief for the severe pain my friend was experiencing. She made us feel as if she did not care at all. The second star is purely for the nurse and the x-ray technician who were caring towards us. UPDATE: After an MRI we have discovered the pain was coming from a herniated disk pressing on her nerve. That is a very serious issue. read more

Spent 2 mins with Avery who just told me he wasn't a hip person and needed to make an appt with his partner, Petersen who's a hip ortho. Petersen was ok so I scheduled surgery for Jan while in the process of a second opinion. His admin never emailed me or followed up for the appt although we discussed the date and place. Ended up going with Andersen ortho. Much better experience. Also, their billing dept is screwed up. Not a great experience. Seems like a factory. read more

My daughter, a college freshman going to school out-of-state, had an appointment in Jan 2024 for a problem with her knee. She saw an NP. They took an x-ray and wanted a follow-up MRI before any treatment. The next time she would be home was for spring break in March, so we scheduled the MRI and a follow-up visit with the Orthopedist four days later. We arrived at the MRI facility only to find out the OrthoVirginia office didn't submit anything with our insurance until the previous business day, so consequently, the MRI appointment was canceled. They had two months to submit the necessary documentation! Now, we are back at square one, while my daughter has lived with pain every day for months now. We will look for another medical provider. read more

In the summer of 2020, at the age of 60, I tripped and landed on my outstretched arm. The next day my shoulder began to hurt. I went to my regular doctor's office and was referred to their sports medicine department. I was told it was probably just a "wear-and-tear" injury with my rotator cuff, in spite of my explaining that I had fallen. They ordered physical therapy. Long story short, after 10 months of PT and a couple of cortisone injections my shoulder was getting no better. So I went to OrthoVirginia for another opinion. I saw Dr. Novak who *listened*, asked detailed questions about my fall, and then ordered the MRI the sports medicine doctor never thought I needed. It turned out I had a full thickness tear of the rotator cuff due to traumatic injury. No amount of PT was ever going to fix it. I was scheduled for surgery in November 2021. Dr. Novak performed the surgery which went well. The recovery was long and not a lot of fun, but the OrthoVirginia PT team at Fair Oaks was fabulous. The follow up from Dr. Novak and his team was excellent. By the summer of 2022, I had the use of my arm back, and am now back in full swing with yoga and other activities I'd had to stop doing. Everyone at OrthoVirginia was fantastic to work with. Communication was excellent. I recommend them highly. read more

I recently wrote a review on my visit to Ortho VA at Fair Oaks as I was in worse pain after receiving two injections on both knees for level 4 pain. After getting shots I wrote that my pain went up to a level 10 pain when I got home. I went to the fair oaks location with extreme pain in my lower back. Dr William Peterson was wonderful, after looking at my x rays he ordered me to get an MRI immediately and referred me to one of his colleagues Dr Elliott Kim. I needed surgery right away! Dr Kim and his team took great care of me. Spinal surgery is a pretty big deal and the pain was unbearable. After surgery and some PT I feel so much better! I would definitely recommend both doctors! This is the newest location of Commonwealth Orthopaedics. The Herndon location has relocated here. They needed a lot more space and had run out of space at the old office. I visited for the first time a couple of weeks ago for another check up on my elbow. My Doctor and Orthopaedic Surgeon Robert Dombrowski decided to have me go in for an MRI - he wants to see what is going on inside my elbow since the surgery and rehab - and find out what is causing me to still have problems. Why not 5 stars? Well, my elbow is far better than it was a couple of years ago - far less pain, I have a lot more strength and use of my arm (although I still protect it and don't use it much - Doctors orders). So I've made progress. Once this whole business gets resolved favorably in terms of my elbow being healed. then I will revisit this review! read more

I had a scheduled appointment for a time that the doctor was NOT available. The office called to reschedule and they offered me an appointment earlier in the week, which was nice, but didn't tell me that appointment would be at a different location more than twice as far away. First, how unprofessional to schedule appointments when the doctor isn't available. Second, location is extremely important, why would they even offer an appointment at a different location? Thankfully, the person on the phone briefly mentioned the new location when summarizing the new appointment right before we were going to hang up the phone, so I was able to cancel the appointment. read more

Although their website advertises "Walk-ins welcome," the receptionist told me if I had called their call center, I would have known. I arrived at their office prior to 8am and the front desk told me call center did not open until 8am, so that information would not have helped. Dr Grossman has never been less than an hour late for appointments with my wife. The office failed to have the ultrasound machine ready for a hip injection so she took more than 2 hours to advance a needle into her hip joint using a dozen xrays for guidance. All the while seeing other patients in between. I am also a physician and consider this barbaric. This is usually done with ultrasound or fluoroscopy. I have never heard of it being done this way. It caused prolonged pain, involved unnecessary radiation, and was ineffective. Two of my physician-colleagues were stunned to hear this. I left two voice messages and a portal message for the practice administrator and Dr. Grossman asking for a call to discuss but have not received a call or message back. I am unlikely to refer patients to OrthoVirginia ever again. read more

Had appointment was told to get there 10 minutes early did got check in my appointment was at 2pm as of 3:30pm still have not seen a doctor. If they are to schedule you appointment should be on time I can see 30 minutes behind but when I was leaving I was told they were one hour and 1/2 behind schedule. You have to think we make appointment because our time is busy I lost 2 1/2 hours from work and still did not see a doctor I will not go back. Dr. Croog misdiagnosed my kid's gymnastics injury and did not put a cast on her. After several appointments and x-rays and pain not having gone away he suggested he did a surgery! At this point, as any reasonable person would, I took my kid elsewhere to be treated. Turned out she had a hairline fracture and significant bone bruising. She was in a cast for 8 weeks after 6 months of original visit. Stay away from this doctor. read more

I do not recommend this place at all. They seem like a conveyor-belt factory churning through patients. You can't get second opinions from any other surgeon in this practice and it seems like, as a company, they might have just bought up other practices around the area. 1. One particular surgeon was recommended by our family doctor and even the nurses in the pre-surgery spoke highly of him. 2. The surgeon's bedside manner was typical of surgeons and their superiority complex. Doesn't listen, dismissive of patient's concerns and questioning, and quick to attribute problem to patient's preconditions almost like a CYA move. Furthermore, information written into his reports are NOT what was said in the office at all. 3. One simple procedure has become an unending nightmare because their attention to outpatient care is absolutely atrocious and negligent. They do NOT take responsibility nor showed any concern about what is truly happening. I learned more about wounds, wound-care, dressing types, etc. from my own googling than from this surgeon or his PA. 4. I am now having serious doubts about the integrity of the surgery that was done. I wish I could give less stars. Now, I need to find a quality surgeon to get a second opinion to finally resolve this issue once and for all. read more

Hanne Hurson lacks the skills to manage a physical therapy office or be the DPT: 1. Did not provide the right exercise to correct the problem.2. Did not guide the patient on which muscle group should be used during the exercise.3. Cut short treatment program when patient still experiences pain (problem has not been resolved)4. Created bias against patients by reviewing previous therapist assessment/input on patients from previous visits. OrthoVirginia should not keep tabs on patients 5. Hanne Hurson received the promotion from attending her boss' exercise program..they are close friends.6. Surveyed patients at the beginning of the treatment. Of course, patients will give great ratings. Future patients should be aware of any good rating given to Hanne Hurson. read more

*If you have a child who fractured their bone(s), please take them to a facility that has trained their staff on how to wrap a cast and remove it properly, like Pediatric Specialists of Virginia. My daughter and I had a horrible experience at the Fair Oaks branch of OrthoVirginia, in Fairfax. I visited this branch of OrthoVirginia towards the end of August, on recommendation from urgent care, to have my preschool daughter's arm placed in a cast after she had fractured it. They wrapped her arm and we were told to return after 4 weeks. We returned to have the cast removed. They cut into my daughter's skin in several locations along her arm while removing the cast causing her a lot of pain, I have pictures. When we went to the X-ray room, the radiologist did not ask if I might be pregnant. When I asked him if there is protective gear I should wear, he said "no, but you can stand to the side," which was still in the open space where the X-ray was being taken. At all the radiology clinics I have visited, the radiologist always asks if I may be pregnant and places protective gear on me regardless of the answer. The X-ray showed angulation of the bone. Rather than the bone healing in a straight line, the bone fragments had moved towards each other in an angle to look like a mountain. That's not supposed to happen unless there was a lot of space in the cast to allow the bone fragments to move. My daughter had no swelling when the cast was placed the first time, which means the cast was improperly wrapped. I discussed my concerns with the medical staff who trivialized the mistakes by telling me that the skin cuts wouldn't leave a scar and that the bone deformation they caused would be simply a cosmetic issue that would resolve itself in a year. Had they done their job properly, my daughter wouldn't have marks on her arm until now and there would be no cosmetic deformations! They reapplied a cast and I went to pediatric specialists of Virginia to get a second opinion. Their X-ray showed that the second cast was also not properly wrapped with significant space inside. Now my daughter has to wear a brace for an additional 6 weeks. I called the Orthovirgnia complaints department to file my complaints. The woman I spoke to told me that someone would be reaching out to me. It has been 3 weeks and no one from orthovirgina has reached out to me. I really hope no other family experiences what we did. read more

I herniated a disc @ L4-5 and was in severe pain. I was quickly seen at Ortho Virginia with minimal wait times and hospitalized at Inova Fairfax. Dr. Steven Hughes performed a very complex surgery (in addition to the herniated disc, I have spina bifida, had back surgery in infancy causing abnormal spine development and scar tissue, and arthritic conditions in my lower back). The surgery was successful in all respects - my pain was instantly eliminated and I was back on my feet quickly despite the complexity of the procedure and the fairly extensive amount of surgical work done on my back aside from the disc repair itself. Both before and after surgery, Dr. Hughes and his team, including his excellent PA-C Jennifer Leeman who also assisted in the surgery, kept me informed and as comfortable as possible. I was due for a follow up after my MRI but could not get an appointment with my original doctor. I have a wedding in 3 months and need to get started on treatments ASAP, so I asked to switch doctors and agreed to stay with that doctor for the course of my treatment. Dr. Lane was a horrible experience and I have nothing but bad things to say about him. He kept asking why I went to him. When he was about to prescribe me a steroid that I just finished taking, I told him, to which he replied "then why are you here?" As he was looking at my MRI scans... Sounds like all he cares about is who he can cut into. Bad bedside manners, and horrible patient care. read more

Totally fed up with these clowns. Been to two different offices within two weeks. Took my 12 year old stepdaughter to see them for a broken finger on referral from Urgent Care. Gave us a fast appointment (2 days) and our wait time was minimal. Dr. was a bit dismissive, but she had a minor injury, so I wasn't really bothered. Appointment for me on the other hand was difficult to make and I'm nothing but frustrated with this practice. I'm a repeat patient. I was seen in their Fairfax office over 6 years ago, so I'm not new to these guys. I called because I hurt my ankle (that's been sprained before) two months ago and it hasn't improved. I have to wait two weeks for an appointment with the "foot and ankle specialist". Fine. I go to the appointment, and despite correcting them on my new name, address and insurance several times, they still can't get it right. I wait for an HOUR with my two year old in tow before I even get an x-ray. Another 1/2 hour wait for the dr, who was short with me. I didn't even get the impression he was listening to me. I described my pain, he poked my ankle until I yelped, and then looked at the x-ray. Kept saying "rare to see an inside sprain" and "that might be a bone fragment". Said if I'd been to see him sooner, he'd put me in a boot, but now just a lace up brace. Um, okay. Recommended physical therapy 2-3 times a week for 6 weeks. Wanted me to come back in 4 weeks to review how that's going. Call Commonwealth Orthopedic PT, and they can't see me for FIVE weeks. No appointments available. Uh, so I make the appointment anyway. A week later, using the brace they gave me, I'm in MORE pain than when I saw Dr. Lutta. I tell them I couldn't get a PT appointment before my next appointment with Dr. Lutta so they cancel that for me. I tell them the problems I'm having and say he'll call me back. I made that phone call at 9. I got a call back - sorry a "Hi this is Dr. Lutta. *crickets*" at 5:45. I tell him the problem. He tells me to find PT elsewhere, keeps saying "this shouldn't still hurt. Are you saying the brace isn't supportive enough" and a lot of "um, uh". Not instilling a lot of confidence. Tells me to make another appointment with him next week. So I call the office immediately after talking to him and they're closed. Really? So I think I'll be calling around for a new ortho. and a second opinion with someone who acts like they give a crap about whether or not I'm in pain and why. read more

They are the absolute worst place ever. Our three year old fell and broke her arm on October 15 2022 so we took her to urgent care where they did X-rays and put a splint and told us we needed to see an orthopedic for a cast. So we went to OrthoVirginia. When we first walked in on October 16 they asked if we have insurance which we don't so they said self pay is 185$ since we already have the X-rays. All we needed was a cast. So we go in and the doctor saw us for like 2 minutes checked the X-rays that We brought and told the nurse to put a cast and said to come back in 2 weeks to take it off. One week later we received a bill for $703 for the cast which was outrageous. I called them and told them that no one had explained to us that there will be additional charges. They said they will ask the doctor and see what they can do. Of course no one called. So we took our baby to Pediatrics Specialist of Virginia. The doctor (Laura) was extremely nice and she took her time to explain what was going on and said that two weeks only cast is too soon for an active little girl and suggested we keep the cast for an additional 2 weeks. She did the X-ray and took the cast off. Today December 8th 2022 I received a called from collection regarding OrthoVirginia outstanding bill only after 51 days from our visit and they've been calling since 3 days ago. It's simply Highway robbery. They don't even deserve one star. Stay away. read more

Not a great experience. Lots of costly mistakes on the admin side of the house. Their incompetence really caused hardship impacting my recovery. They are very unresponsive, have no follow-through and when they do follow up it's very late so you find out about things last minute. Their doctors and PA's are really great - it's the support staff that are remarkably incompetent. They are though a key part of your health care process. I would suggest that orthovirginia completely reevaluate and turn over staff and in the meantime, patients should try Fairfax Orthopedic - they were recommended to me and I wish I had gone there instead. read more

I had the misfortune of being referred to Dr. Keith Lawhorne many years earlier, but they don't see Medicaid patients unless they come through emergency and he happens to be orthopedist on call. It took me 2-3 years to finally have a non-medical insurance. I was so happy since Dr. Lawhorne treated Pro football player R G III who had a similar knee injury to mine. Since I was a nobody to him, he didn't take x-rays or even touch the knee. He looked at me being 49-50 at the time, told me that he could only give me a knee surgery and would even consider the gel treatment dismissing me with a prescription for tramadol which I had stopped taking when it had been moved up to a narcotic. He didn't care that the referring doctor had sent me to him since he had the best gel treatment on the market. He did nothing to help me with my problem. I went elsewhere and the gel treatment helped emincely. Virginia Ortho wants payment for this useless visit. Dr. Lawhorne should be sued for the way regular (non-pro athletic) patients are treated (or in my case, not treated). read more
