Came in to urgent care for a swollen an de painful knee, first they mixed up me, Liam with another kid, William, after that me and William changed rooms, they took a culture and assured me that if anything concerning came up we would be notified, 3 weeks later my knee is worse, so I made a virtual appointment with atrium, the lady looked at my chart and said go to the hospital NOW!!! It was currently storming very bad but she insisted, upon arrival at levines I was informed that I had a staff infection, the infection was PUT ON MY CHART, but ortho Carolina didn't say anything, doctors told me had I not came in I would have possibly died, I then had to stay in the hospital for a whole week getting IV antibiotics and my knee surgically drained and cleaned, all of this could have been avoided had ortho told anyone about the infection read more

My experience was subpar. They have wheelchairs in the lobby but none had foot rests. I went in for a sprained ankle. When I was up on the third floor, where their office is, there were no wheelchairs there. I went into my examining room and then a man came in to take me to x-ray. And he just said come on follow me. He walked briskly ahead of me. I had crutches, but it was a long walk and I'm an older person. I'm a senior citizen. No one offered to get me a wheelchair or help me at all halfway to the x-ray room. I passed a large administrative area with different people working on computers and I asked the group of them. If there was a chance they could get me a wheelchair. Everybody just looked at each other with a blank stare and said no all of the wheelchairs are down in the Lobby I saw them I said, but none had a foot rest. They all looked at each other with a blank stare, like oh well I said this doesn't make sense. You're an ortho care place. I would think someone could help me with a wheelchair. This is a long walk to the x-ray room. They just continued working and ignored me when I got into the x-ray room. The x-ray technician was covered in tattoos which I'm sorry I find extremely offputting at a medical facility Which should be focused on health since tattoos are inherently very unhealthy. He was course and said OK get up on the wooden box. There was a box about 7 inches elevated and I was in acute pain. He didn't offer to help at all. He walked across the room Then he snapped an x-ray without even asking me to put on or giving me time to put on the lead robe. I said wait a minute the lead robe is right here on a hook. I'd like to wear that. In an aggressive argumentative tone, he told me he only suggest those for people of childbearing age. I said I'm sorry I've never had x-rays without wearing some kind of protective lead robe so I'd like to wear this for my next x-ray his answer to me was I have four other x-rays to get in after this one. I said oh so it sounds like me wearing a robe or not is more about your schedule. Then when the PA came in to address the x-rays and explained my situation I was not offered a handicap placard for my car. As I said, I'm a senior. I have a foot that's swollen like a bowling ball and no one offered that I was also not recommended to have any physical therapy. Just a follow up appointment in three weeks. No schedule of icing was recommended nothing. I basically went there just to find out if I had a fracture or not, but they didn't give me any medical care at all. It was purely a diagnostic visit with a lot of attitude in the way I was treated. I would not recommend this place. Then I called back on the following week realizing I didn't have a handicap placard for my car. You can't actually call this place you get a call center. The person at the center said they just can't hand them out to everyone. I said no, I'm sure they can't, but if someone has their foot swollen out like a bowling ball. It seems obvious that this should be a recommendation. Reverse shoulder replacement on dominant side,,,,At the three (3) month follow-up I arrived feeling really good.....then was sent to their xray tech....She wrecked my shoulder and I was back to pain, aching and movement restrictions..... If you cannot schedule an appt. via the Portal, don't even try to call them. You will sit on the phone listening to music for ever and then it will disconnect you. There is no way to get a human. Don't try leaving a message - they will never call you back. Really pathetic. The doctors and their staff are great. However, administrative requests go into the black hole as well. You are told they will follow up within x days and you don't hear from them for weeks, or months. read more

Recently went to ER with a broken toe. I went to a Novant hospital and assured them I would set up a follow up with my ortho (i have used Orthocarolina for many running injuries). My appt was for a Monday. Friday morning I get a phone call. Ortho staff told me they will cancel my Monday appt if I don't pay the $30. I owe. First the agent gave me a date that I was no where near ortho. Then she backed up to a 2018 $30 copay I missed. 2018! Seriously that is on YOU for dropping the ball. She then tells me I need to give her my charge card number in order to keep appt. No sane person will do this. So I call Ortho. Yep all true however I got a little more info. No, I can not pay at time of service because.... the 2018 is on the old billing system. . I am on vacation, I can not access my files to make sure that the claim is accurate. Please note, I have used this group several time and they have gotten thousands on dollars from both me and my insurance. I told the agent, I will gladly pay Monday. I hung up. Went on portal. THEY CANCELED MY APPOINTMENT. so now, I am walking around with a broken toe (big toe) and cant be seen by any other doctor (clearly not an Orthocarolina) until September. The fact that this place has hostage fees is quite gross. $30! That when system changed, they failed to send a late bill. Dr. Jeremy Gaines and the surgeon Dr. Roy majors did my ACL and meniscus reconstruction surgery I have never in my life been treated so inhumane not even two weeks post surgery and I'm not being given anything for the pain the doctors are trying to tell me what my pain is and tell me that my pain is what they say it is I feel like I'm being judged never in my life have I had any history of Drug abuse so for them to treat me the way they are is just that very inhumane and very unprofessional I do not refer anyone to have the surgery done at ortho Carolina and less you have deep pockets, I've tried contacting doctor to exapress my discomfort and it took them a week to get back to me mean while haveing to be taken to local emergency room due to a possible infection in my joints from the surgery Roy majors performed read more

First off my review has nothing to do with the staff ( doctors, assistants, nurses or receptionists ). I've been a patient for several years with ZERO problems. My issue is with the new upgrade of their system ( I guess ) . NOW you can't get a live person on the phone. They no longer offer leaving a message and receiving a call back. Nobody answers the phone. I was in last week for a shoulder issue where I was supposed to have an MRI scheduled. I was told I would be contacted in a few days. It's a week later and NOTHING. Tried the patient portal and gave my information then was told I needed an access code that would be sent to my email in 2-3 days. I also sent an emaiI ...no response . I am currently on hold for the third time. Been about 15 minutes now just like earlier. Pain is to the point that I can barely use my right arm. I'm giving them until tomorrow then, I'm finding a different clinic. I would make a personal appearance but, that would not bode well for me or them. The staff were extremely nice and respectful. Dr. Gullickson focused more on why I was on Medicare at such a young age than the actual problem. I have been an accidents and had re-injuries. I've worked since I was 14 years old. So I am entitled to my health coverage. The doctor should have focused more on my needs and not my health coverage. Last but not least he said he was doing an MRI for my mental. I don't have mental health issues, so I don't know why he would say something like that. read more

Beware! if you want to be dehydrated ,have a kidney infection , lose 15 lbs. in 1 week ,have your leg facture , go to the ER 2 times in 3 days after the operation, unable to bend your leg after the operation . Doctors are fine but service is not good. Excessive paperwork for new patients and then another 15 minutes at the counter to repeat what is already in the paperwork. This was at the Ballantyne office. Made a follow up appointment in Matthews (based on doctor availability) because results did not correct the discomfort. I took my 5th grader out of school, took the day off, drove 45 minutes to find out that the phone associate made the appointment for the wrong day. The ride back was an hour and 15 minutes. I am now sitting at Minute Clinic. Thanks Ortho for wasting my time. I told the lady making the appointment that my daughter likely just needs an antibiotic, and not an appointment, but much like my expressed availability, the phone associate paid little attention. I'm hoping this is just a one off but felt compelled to share the mishap so others might be prepared. read more

First time last time. Went in for a procedure today that had been scheduled weeks before only to find out when I get there that appointment had been rescheduled. No call to advise me. Unfortunately, OrthoCarolina is the only game in town. From a clinician perspective, I've always received great care. Recently had a finger surgery with Dr. Loeffler, and the clinical experience was exceptional. But... the administrative experience is just plain awful. You can't get through to a human being without SIGNIFICANT wait times, the phone system frequently has "glitches" where you go through a continuous loop and can't leave a message. The amount of redundant paperwork you fill out either before the visit (online), or in the office is ridiculous. I don't feel like they look at the answers, because you repeat them in the exam anyway. Scheduling is difficult, people don't call you back (including administrators)...but it is concerning when you simply can't get a hold of the office (even post-surgery). This practice (not just Matthews location, but city-wide) needs an overhaul of whoever is running the admin show. I will consider going to another city/state for major surgery when the next time comes the experience has been so bad. read more

I would have liked to have given this place a better review but I can't. I would say if you don't have insurance don't bother going there. It was obvious to me that they were. It interested in helping me when they found out I had no insurance. I basically paid $328 for 2 xrays and to be told to take advil. I wanted relief for my severe arthritis and got none. read more

I went to OrthoCarolina Matthews Urgent Care today because I woke up with a flare up of sciatic nerve pain. I needed to have this taken care of before I went out of town to a 5 day baseball tournament for my grandson. Usually I have gotten a cortisone shot for this, but the doctor refused this treatment today. Instead he gave me a dosepack which may or may not help and by the time I finished the pack I would be out of town. I decided to make an appointment to see someone else on Monday. The doctor I saw today was rude, spoke in non-speak, didn't really listen and wouldn't answer a very simple medical question,"should I wait to take the dosepack as it might muddy the waters for Dr. Spector". Instead he simply walked out of the room. I wish I could remember his name (a long complicated one). I will think long and hard if I use them again. read more

I honestly don't know how this place has so many bad reviews. The only problem I've had here was one of the doctors, but I quickly got switched over to a new one. The people at the front desk are wonderful and nothing but kind. All the check out people are awesome and very positive, and the nurses are amazing. I had doctor Silva do my knee surgery, and he has always answered my concerns and listened to me. He took care of my knee and helped me get back to a full recovery. The only reason I'm giving a 4 star is because of that one doctor I had, but I would definitely recommend this office to anyone! read more

After being sent all over town by the OrthoCarolina system I arrived 25 mins late and now they won't see me. Really?!!! Every appointment I've had I've waited thirty mins to an hour past the time they scheduled me, but after spending $30+ to get around town for this appointment they tell me they can reschedule? No way. So much for the 'renowned service' I was told about. Try taking into consideration people who have to pay to get around, who have to come out of pocket just to spend 5 mins with a doc. I live out of town (CA) and have waited weeks to see someone here, and now due to multiple Uber cancels and then arriving the wrong location I finally get here and now can't be seen. STILL HAD TO PAY TO GET HERE, AND HOME THO! It's really f*d up that they won't see me, and since there's nothing I can say to get them to assess my injury today (now over a month old) I'm surely going to tell this story. I barely had time to sit down in the waiting room before they called me back to the exam room. Xrays showed no breaks. PA recommended a wrist brace, but I declined after learning that they would charge the exorbitant price ($220 for a nylon brace that I probably wouldn't wear anyway) to my insurance. My knee was absolutely killing me and I had to go out of town. I made an appointment and when I got there the staff told me it was for the next day. I said I understood and said I would come back later for the urgent care hours. She asked me to wait and came back and I was able to see Dr. Matthew G. Every person in the office was warm and welcoming and Dr. G was great, he gave me the shot in my knee himself and it barely hurt. A week later my knee was feeling great and my trip was a success. He and every person there from check in, the PA to the x-ray person to the Doctor to the check out women were very kind and accommodating. read more

There was a lot of rolling of the eyes and sarcasm from this woman because I did not agree with something she said. I am a customer that literally just walked off the elevator for physical therapy. She was very unprofessional and lacks great customer skills. Clearly she is not someone that needs to be front and center to greet customers as they get off of the elevator (2nd floor). This is not the first time this establishment has projected poor customer service, but this is the first time I have ever been faced with this type of unprofessional customer service as I enter physical therapy.Orthocarolina-Matthews front desk employee needs to be reevaluated. WORST place to go. I broke my bicep tendon a week ago, they sent me back home without giving me anything for my arm. I had to wait a week to get a MRI done. Then, they called me the same day of my appointment saying the doctor who was going to see me wasn't going to be able to help me because I had broken my tendon. Why would they schedule an appointment with someone who is not a surgeon if I was getting a MRI done to check if I had rupture ????? They told me I had to wait another week to be seen for a Doctor who then could schedule the appointment for my surgery. If you are thinking you are getting surgery in this place in a short period of time. DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE read more

I love the weekend hours and that part is great. What was not great was the bill. I was charged $175 for surgery. I did not get surgery and it was a non woven piece of cloth that the nurse wet and then held it to my wrist. It was the size of 2 to 3 inches wide and about 8 inches long. She cut it to fit my palm to elbow and then started wrapping it with basic beige sports wrap. I had to help her wrap it. Then she said that I should keep my hand flat for about 20 minutes as the non woven fabric hardened. I was leaving and asked her how I was suppose to take a shower, she said to take it off. So it was a temporary splinter. When I got the bill, I called into the business office and complained about the $175 charge to wrap it ( they charged me $17 in addition for the splinter and wrap). I told the business office that it was not surgery and I had to help the nurse. I was told the charge was right. Now this was not the only charge, because there were xrays, doctor, etc. But $175 for the time (5 minutes max) to put on the fabric. Way too expensive and they would not reduce it. Pleasant Dr. Clark (pediatric surgeon) sent our 11 yr old here for physical therapy to attempt recovery from an elbow fracture surgery with a poor outcome. Our child's physical therapist couldn't have been kinder, but I felt like she was working in the dark, because there appeared to be a lack of communication between the surgeon & physical therapist. Frustratingly, our child was shuffled between physician assistants, surgery with Dr. Clark, months of physical therapy & a consultation with specialist Dr. Gaston. Despite all this, our child now types primarily with his pinky on his right hand, because his elbow doesn't turn properly. He can't put his palm down. (Imagine you have a permanent handshake-like elbow angle.) This impacts activities like playing basketball or how one would get change from a cashier's hand. OrthoCarolina recommended additional surgery, but by going to top medical schools, we learned OrthoCarolina failed to take an xray which reveals a serious post-surgical complication (synostosis--bone in wrong spot) & that more surgery would be risky. Sometimes it seems best to accept a poor surgical outcome. ------- If your family has problems #1) consider calling a NC teaching hospital for a "specialist." (In-state, UNC was quite helpful. Out-of-state, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia agreeably did their consultation via telephone.) " #2) Consider private physical therapists (Standouts are St. George Physical Therapy & Matthews Physical Therapy) #3) Medical record errors occur, so purchase & read all records ASAP. When you get copies of x-rays, make sure views are individually listed on the disc. If you went to an urgent care facility 1st, you may need to get records there also. #4) Don't delay if you suspect problems. If needed, Facebook's ProPublica Patient Safety Group has members who offer advice & a "SurgeonScorecard" form for reporting errors. Novant Matthew's Medical Library helps with research. I'm surprised to see such a low rating. I have 3 teenage boys that are athletes. In the athletic circle it's the first place recommended. I have been there many times (unfortunately) for myself as well. My 80 year old mother did her physical therapy there. No place is perfect but I'd choose it above the ER in a heart beat. Save your money!!! After suffering for over a month with consistent, burning, throbbing pain in my heel I went to OrthoCarolina Urgent Care at the recommendation of my primary doctor's office, because my primary does not do cortisone shots, and I could not wait two weeks for an office appointment. After a month of various treatments, that did not work, the pain had reached an intolerable level and I could barely walk, so I finally went in. Kelly the P.A., who clearly could not have cared less how much pain I was in, spent all of two minutres with me. She never looked at my xrays, and then informed me that even though cortisone injections would be the standard treatment, she would not do the injections as she was the only one there and she had six other patients to see; she was too busy! She told me to make an office appointment. Really? You take my $85.00 copay and whatever else I am going to be charged for the xrays, and then tell me you can not be bothered TO TREAT MY CONDITION? Isn't that why you are there? If I thought I could wait for an office visit, I would have! What a waste of time and money! I am still in pain and just gave Orthocarolina $85.00 for the privilege of walking through their doors! Do yourself a favor and go somewhere else! read more
