In recent years, I've had issues with FCP/Novant Matthews predatory billing practices and marketing calls. I never had anything but compliments for my doctor of 20 years. That all changed dramatically during and after a recent visit.
I had not seen my FCP/Novant doctor, Charlotte Karriker, since March of 2020. In June 2021, I went for a routine yearly visit and had other health related questions. I approached the visit no differently than any in the last 20 years. My doctor went off the rails during this visit. Coming into the visit, I asked politely, in my customary visit notes for the doctor, "please don't discuss covid with me". As with many people, I've heard more than enough in the last 16 months about covid and had no unanswered questions. She was in her own zone from the moment she read that I didn't want covid counseling. I had informed the nurse too, who seemed to understand covid overload, without any drama.
My doctor was overtly triggered by my request - having 2 emotional outbursts at me during the visit and typing so aggressively I thought she would damage her computer. The second of the two outbursts was shocking. She started to tremble, nearly in tears, and then outburst at me how working with covid patients a year and a half had been so hard on her - she appeared traumatized to me. This was completely out of context for the visit and discussion of the moment.
The next day I find in MyChart that the visit notes are very inaccurate, some biased without proper context and that she berates me in the notes as having "selfishly" taken her time, taking away from other's needs - that I should find another doctor. After 20 years, never a disagreement between us, I've read many of her notes and these visit notes are bizarre; I feel violating my HIPPA rights to accuracy.
I have been unsuccessful in getting my HIPPA protected record corrected by her. There were only two of us in the room and I find her notes to be inaccurate, with some parts outright fabrication and her dressing down of me in her notes as highly inappropriate. My recollection of the visit is as valid as hers, so this is a "she said, he said" situation. These are my HIPPA protected records and there should be no dispute over the content. Any dispute needs to be resolved before I can find another primary care physician.
Under HIPPA civil rights law we all have a right to accurate medical records. My First Charlotte Physicians doctor has fired me, and I feel is (angrily) poisoning my HIPPA records as she pushes me out the door. I never in 20 years would I have guessed that she would become so unbalanced by something like covid and treat anyone as she has me.
My only recourse appears to be a complaint to the NC Medical Board and HHS Office of Civil Rights. We have communicated and she's dug her heels in vindictively deep. This review is my experience of the visit of June 2021 and since. read more
