And, of course, the library has a wonderful collection of books, movies, newspapers, magazines and streaming services. The staff has always been kind, courteous and helpful. Unfortunately, because of city cutbacks, the library has been unable to reopen on Sundays and Mondays. The library is my favorite building in the entire county and I encourage everyone to check out (forgive the pun) this gem.

I just visited the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse a couple of weeks ago (in the beginning of March) and it…read morewas open for tours. This is the original, smaller, and, in my opinion, the more interesting of the two lighthouses in Newport. This lighthouse is built into an actual three-story house, which you can walk through most of. Although it was not possible to walk to "the top," I'm not aware of any lighthouse that is currently still allowing this in 2026. (Lighthouse lenses are extremely expensive, and, unfortunately, it's not difficult to imagine how one or two bad tourists might have ruined this for the rest of us.) But you can still walk through the first three stories of the house, and I thought that was pretty cool. On the first floor of the house, there was a replica of a fifth order Fresnel lens, which is the smallest standard size lens used in lighthouses. For the lighthouse enthusiast, it's really interesting to compare the size of this lens to the much larger first order lens at Heceta. I also found it interesting to think about the lightkeeper walking through their actual house with hot oil, rather than filtering it in an oil house and then carrying it up to the separate lighthouse. While the rooms were roped off, it was possible to walk right up to the doorway of each one, and see that they were filled with replica furniture similar to what would have been used in the late 1800s. Eventually, this small lighthouse was replaced by the much larger Yaquina Head Lighthouse, which is 4 miles to the north. The Yaquina Head Lighthouse was not open for tours when I visited, but I've seen pictures, and it looks almost exactly like the Heceta Lighthouse, except it's still whitewashed. So, in my opinion, this smaller lighthouse is actually more unique, and maybe even more worth visiting than its replacement. This Yaquina Bay Lighthouse is managed by State Parks. Parking is $10/day or free with an annual pass. The Yaquina Head Lighthouse (the newer, taller one 4 miles to the North) is managed by BLM, which charges the same daily use fee, but is covered by a different (federal) parking pass. So, you can't see both with the same pass. If you absolutely have to choose, in my opinion, Yaquina Bay has the better lighthouse, while Yaquina Head has the better beach, museum, and hiking trails.

I don't know how I never did the Otter Crest Loop, but this viewpoint is one of my new favorites, and I can't wait to show it to my kids. It's well maintained, a decent amount of parking, and the view is worth Everything. Plus, if it's just too windy, there's a little (not so little) gift shop with perfect windows for checking everything out while staying dry and breeze free. The attendants are full of fun stories and information, the shop itself is well stocked with bits and bobs to remind you of how much fun you had, and seriously, the view. Wow.

I walked into this building without any notice to the volunteer hoping to find a little bit of…read moreinformation on my family and was overwhelmingly surprised by the warm and wonderful welcome by the volunteer there (Mrs Matthews I believe). She showed me around the center, found information on my family and knew who to call to help give me more information on my family. Overall I was amazed at how genuine and wonderful the people are. It really is small town America where everyone knows your name and gives you a giant smile as you drive in. It has had some good times and it's not so great times but it is worth a stop. The shops might not be open late and the glitz and glamour is over in Newport, but you will find some really nice people willing to stay open later to make you a BLT, to show you around the city and have more than small talk as you pass by. Definitely worth a walk in the town down Main Street, past all the beautiful Victorians and take a minute to sit at the one of many city benches throughout the town. This isn't a place you rush through, you come, you sit and you enjoy the peace and quiet that is Toledo, Oregon. And the best place to start is the historical center that has over 100 years of Toledo history in it.

The only thing it doesn't have is a gas station. Nearest one is 8 miles north on highway 101 in Waldport. Highlights include the Yachats State Park and Recreation Site. Great views with a viewing platform, tide pools to explore, restrooms, and plenty of parking. Many grab a bite in town and come here to eat it with a gorgeous view. Good eats include Luna Sea Fish House, LeRoy's Blue Whale, and Ona Restaurant & Lounge. Topper's is a great place for salt water taffy, ice cream, and handmade fudge and chocolates. If you're looking for rental properties, Sweet Homes is a great company to work with. We've used them a few times and have always been happy with pricing, amenities and correspondence. There's also a post office, Dollar General and C & K Market for last minute items. Overall, one of our favorite coastal towns to visit. Not crowded like more popular beach towns. A perfect place to relax and rewind. Highly recommend.

If you're looking for an event space in Yachats, odds are there will be a space in this building that can accommodate you. Please be aware though, that if you have any questions whatsoever throughout the process of scouting, securing a reservation, and planning for your event, the coordinator will be nearly impossible to reach and likely will not return your call. (This is why I can only give the space 3 stars overall) This review comes from someone who works for an event space, so I truly know how busy a role like this can be, however, when numerous phone calls with questions about the space go unanswered, and community members see my pleas for help on Facebook, that was the only way I was able to get quite simple information that a return phone call would have taken maybe 2 minutes of time. I finally bit the bullet and rented the place sight unseen, hopeful it would work for our event (and it did). Prior to our arrival, I did get the coordinator on the phone to discuss arrival time and location, however she forgot this arrangement and called me the day before our arrival to confirm erroneous details, which I had to remind her of. She then was 15 minutes late to meet up, which set our schedule for the day behind from the get-go. No instructions were given about clean up other than someone would be by to weigh the trash(?), and that person did not ever show up. After the event, 10 days went by before I called to inquire about the refund of our security deposit. I was told by the coordinator it had been issued, so I called my bank, confirming they did not have anything pending on their end. While on the phone with my bank, a receipt was sent via email showing the refund had just THEN, that morning, been initiated. It finally cleared the bank 2 weeks after our event. Perhaps the coordinator is going through a difficult season of life that makes necessary communication less than ideal, but prospective renters should be aware that if you aren't a local organization with a standing reserved room or a "regular" it seems like customer service is not prioritized.

It's not the largest, most exciting town you could choose to stay at on the Oregon Coast, but maybe that is part of the appeal. It has a few shops, restaurants, one bar, and a beautiful view and beach on the bay. But there's not much more than that. It doesn't have any of the "attractions" that usually bring people to the coast, but it's sort of in the middle of it. If you stay at Waldport you are in between other beach towns, and if you are going to try and visit as much as possible during your stay, it's actually not a terrible location to choose, as long as you are okay with having to drive. If you want to have a lot of options of places to walk, maybe it's not the best choice, because you can walk the town in a day. Even though I've been able to stay here for a couple months at a time before, I still never feel like I am here long enough. I never actually want to leave. The locals are always friendly with me and I've met some of the most interesting people just passing through. I think the people I've met are the biggest appeal to me, and I always have a good time. It probably goes without saying... but I love Waldport and I know I will be back. I can't imagine staying anywhere else on the coast.
