This place is being talked about a lot in the North East. The building has always been impressive with three floors and raised seating the owner has outdone himself with huge trees and twinkling fairy lights. The food and drinks menu has been well thought out, clear and concise its not huge but I like the idea that they have picked a few dishes that they will do very well! The service in here started off a little on the shaky side having seated someone else in our seats we were a bit unnerved to see them move people for the the last booth in the raised area. Although it was explained those seating areas were for food only and the people who were moved were only having drinks... Moving swiftly on we were talked through the menu on what was a suitable amount for starter and main etc. We ordered a selection of starters to share; the prawn dynamite sushi was tasty although reading the menu you would think you get a selection of the six offered you do have to choose one as it is handmade to order - nice touch! Next was the spring rolls with duck which were very good with more flavour than your ordinary vegetable variety! My favourite was the pork and prawn dim sum -arriving in a basket to keep them warm they were amazing! Cooked to perfection the rice paper was thin and the pork went so well with the fish. Served with a very hot chilli dip it gave it the kick it needed! Next was the tricky decision between the thai red curry or the monkfish. On recommendation I went for the monkfish (which isn't explained on the menu in detail but is in fact small bites of fish breaded!) served with rice or chips. The curry sauce dip on the side was refreshing and light and the sticky rice came served in the lotus leaf -again a nice touch! I wouldn't normally have went for a fish dish but the waitress had excellent knowledge of the menu which I liked! We finished the meal off with some coconut ice cream and some sake - again something I hadn't tried. Served in a jug and warmed through it was good - definitely worth giving it a go! With one final cocktail for the road - the Guava Royale is one I would recommend I will definately be coming back to try my thai curry! 5* for service - from drinks to food tips and a great atmosphere for a relaxed evening out!

Both soups were fresh tasting and delicious! Perfectly seasoned! My husband's was spicier than mine but I liked them both equally. We also ordered King Prawn Fried Rice to share. After having the soups, we were both a bit disappointed in the fried rice which tasted bland by comparison. We asked for some soy sauce and were brought some other things to spice it up and that helped. The serving size of the rice dish also felt too small for the price. The ambience was nice but quiet and the staff were all very friendly.

We made a booking on a Wednesday night, which you probably don't need to do if you're in a small group. The upper floor was busy, but not full, and it was empty when we left at 9:30. The restaurant has a very classy, elegant feel to it compared to the other Thai place in town, Old Siam, which has a more casual and family-run feel to it. At Mantra, service is very professional, and attention is paid to plating and style. I started with a Cosmopolitan, and our group shared some starters. Between eight of us, the Mantra Sharing Platter for four and an order of fried squid made for the right amount of food. The sharing platter includes chicken satay skewers, king prawn tempura, veggie spring rolls, prawn and chicken toast, and ribs. You can order per person, which is very clever. Get it for less people than you think you need, as it's quite a lot of food. My favorite was the totally addictive prawn and chicken toast, which I'd never had before, it was savory and delicious and craveable. But all of it was very good, and presented beautifully! We all enjoyed the sticky ribs, and crispy tempura. My partner and I shared the Jungle Chicken Curry and Seafood in Aromatic Spices. Both were lovely, the Jungle Curry being rather spicy indeed, especially the sauce/broth. Bright colors, fresh vegetables and well-cooked meat, and a beautiful presentation made it a great meal. Several people got dessert - mine was free and a surprise as the birthday girl. It was some sort of delicious chocolate mousse. It's a little pricier than Old Siam, and the food quality is very similar. The presentation is slightly more elegant, and the service more professional, however. This is more the Thai restaurant for a special date, whereas Old Siam is the one you'd go to on any old Tuesday. But you can't go wrong with either, and everyone really enjoyed their meal at Mantra.
