Zen Windows Des Moines - Vinyl Patio Door with Transom Window and Sidelites

Zen Windows Des Moines

We had a great experience with zen windows. The virtual estimate process was really easy! The…read morelead time to get the windows was long and beyond anyone's control, but it was kept informed the whole time. There were some scheduling hiccups when it came to installation, most of which were my fault, but everything was well handled.

I discovered Zen Windows in the exhibit hall at the 2017 Iowa State Fair. We were interested in…read moreexploring replacement windows. I was immediately attracted by the signage stating that there would be no in-house sales pitch. I spoke with Matt and learned that all that was needed in order to receive a bid was to send my rough measurements and photos of the current windows. That sounded easy enough! A tape measure and a cell phone were all I needed. Soon my information was off in an email. I also contacted other installers for bids and began researching the various window manufacturers to compare the window quality. Zen installs the 3 cost levels of Soft Lite windows, and the online reviews of the materials were positive. We decided to use Zen. Soon Dan came out to make accurate measurements. I spoke with Matt and decided to go with the middle level window and placed the order. We are extremely pleased with our choice. The window quality is excellent. The double-hung windows open and close smoothly and fold in for easy cleaning. We also selected a bay window with casement windows on each side to replace a picture window. Operation of the side windows is smooth. Further we are really happy that we went with the added expense of the bay window--we love it. Installation was fine, and there was a clear commitment to ensuring we were completely satisfied with the installation and finish work. So, all that is expected of any company. With Zen I received exactly what I was expecting! However, one element far exceeded my expectations: customer communication and service. This places Alix and Matt, owners of Zen, at the top with the very best. No question was a burden. Contacting with "Oh, I have another question..." always got a quick response. And no matter when I sent a message or question, be it Monday morning, Friday evening or even on a Sunday, I got a response usually within 15-30 minutes. If customer service and communication are important in a purchase decision, Zen Windows should absolutely be considered. Add in the other factors and Alix and Matt at Zen Windows get my highest recommendation. Look to Zen for quality materials, fine installation, amazing customer service and an outstanding warrantee for materials AND labor. (Matt can give you all the details.)

I would steer clear of Pella Windows…read more My husband and I recently bought our first home and were looking to do some home improvements, as we are expecting our first baby in January, and the windows were high on our priority list. We made a post on a community FB page looking for recommendations on companies we should obtain quotes from. Pella was highly recommended, among other local contractors. We received quite a few quotes from local contractors, and finally had Pella come out as our final option. Jason K was our salesperson, and he was very thorough and pleasant to work with. He really sold us on these windows and ensured that Pella was a reputable company and that we would be pleased with the work done. Mind you, we were not looking for the cheapest bid on this project. We appreciated how highly Jason spoke of Pella and the time he took to explain everything to us. Ultimately, decided to go through with Pella (Pella's quote was around 1-2k higher than other companies). We received our quote around the end of January and signed contracts. Between the end of January and the end of May, there was no communication, other than a call from Jamie letting us know that our job was being cut from a 3-day job down to a 1-day job; I'm assuming because they overbooked themselves and needed to work around timelines they quoted other customers. On delivery day, I was told delivery was going to happen between 11:30-12:30 pm. I used my lunch break at work to ensure I was home to accept the delivery. They did not arrive until well over an hour after the scheduled time, ultimately causing me to be late back to work. One of the cranks on our casement windows was busted upon delivery, and the delivery driver demanded a check from me for the remaining payment due, which I did not have because I was unaware that they required a check. Again, due to no communication from Pella. Fast forward to install day.. I was told by Jamie that they would come to start the project around 7:30 am. The crew showed up around 9 am. So, ultimately, I'm already frustrated because to me, they were late. I talked with the crew members, and they said they rarely start projects before 9 am. It was also pouring down rain that morning with no end in sight. The crew called after about 10 minutes of being at my home and said that will have to reschedule but they had no idea how long we'd be pushed out for. I get it, rain is out of our control. But, someone could have called me that morning and rescheduled vs. the crew driving 1.5-2 hours to our home and calling it as soon as they arrived. In conversation with the crew while they were here, I was informed that they weren't going to get it done in one day, which was even more frustrating because I was told they would be able to and our project was being started on a Friday. When the job was rescheduled for the following Friday, I asked "Will this be done on the same day?" and I received a "Well, I guess we are gonna have to get it done in one day. The office workers don't know how long this kind of stuff actually takes to do." Which was not very reassuring and sounded like Pella needed to sit down and have a team meeting to sort out their communication issues. They were able to "squeeze us in" the following Friday. The crew arrives around 9 am and gets to work. I am gone most of the day at work and return around 3 pm. The crew wraps up around 4 pm, which was great considering they didn't think they were going to get it done. After the crew leaves, I check out the 9 newly installed windows (mix of casement and double-hung) and IMMEDIATELY realize they were not installed correctly. The double-hung windows would hardly open unless you put your entire body's worth of force underneath them. All of the casement windows were wobbly inside the window frame, and the locking mechanisms did not work. They were making a grinding sound when you tried to lock/unlock them. On top of improper installation, we were missing a screen for one of the windows, which we did not receive until almost two months after the install, and Pella damaged our brand new flooring throughout the main floor of our home and tried to fill it in with some sort of adhesive or filler and cover it up like it never happened. They also didn't use proper coverings when working on the interior of our home and scuffed our brand new paint in the dining room. They didn't install new flashing outside the home where they said they would. Some of the second-story windows looked warped from the outside, like they were not sitting in their frames properly. We were told the job could be accomplished in one-day and ultimately, Pella had to come back 3 additional times after the install to ensure things were repaired, causing both my husband and I to move around our work schedules. Also, during this whole drawn-out ordeal, there was little to no communication. I was told someone would call me to address the remaining amount we owed on this project afte
