The food came hot and fast. I got the chicken in the rough with salad and fries. The "salad" was cabbage. Yuck. The rest of it was really good. The mead is also on point, but VERY sweet. Everyone at the table got a different type, so I was able to sample a lot. We arrived right as they opened. It was packed right from the start, so make reservations. Our server appeared to be run off her feet because we rarely saw her. She wrote on the check "service fee is not included." I've never seen that in England before. I am not sure if they were expecting a tip because we're American or what.

There is often pipe music or something similar playing quietly in the background, which is also nice for setting the mood. The food is served on wooden plates and bowls, and no cutlery is given unless your meal type requires it or you actually request it. The waitresses are dressed as serving wenches and you wash your hands between courses using little wooden bowls of water with a piece of lemon floating in them! The signature dish is called chicken in the rough, which is half a chicken cooked in a special oven with gorgeous crispy skin. It is served with chips although you can pick salad or half and half if you want as well. There is a great choice on the menu of starters, mains and desserts and the food is lovely. Although this is 30 mins or so drive from us my dad still prefers to go there than any of the closer ones!

Still plenty of parking left. It was a nice, sunny, picture-perfect day. There is no entrance fee for Land's End. Just the fixed fair priced parking rate. I've read many reviews stating that Land's End became like a theme park, a circus. And I would say that's too harsh. Yes, there are shops, selling lots of souvenirs and touristy stuff. There are games, attractions too. But there are some fun items to be found in the shops. We bought some, we had fun. And there are several food options. Some stalls for a quick bit or a sit-down restaurant with more options. We just grabbed some cornish pasty and a seat outside. And if you're not interested in the museums and the attractions then just skip them. Because Land's End is well worth a visit for the views and the walks. The SW Coast path is just behind the village. Views are spectacular. Walk north toward the "First & Last House" and keep walking along the coast. Or choose to go south from the village. We tried out both. But ended up walking longer on the path going south. Lots of wonderful photo ops, amazing views of the coastline. And not that many walkers even along the way. Would recommend at least sneakers (and not Flip-Flops as we've seen). All in all a very nice visit. Pet-friendly as well! Surely a must-do when in Cornwall if you've never been.

I am…read morewriting this review as I have recently had some portrait photos done by him which in comparison to portrait photos I have had in the past are outstanding. There are lots of photographers around, some of them very unprofessional in manner and their work is also quite bad, but Jon OConnell is a very nice guy, pleasant who charges reasonable rates and his photography is very good. As a new business I feel I ought to write a review and I have already passed his details to a family member as they are getting married this year and think they would be very happy with him taking their wedding photos.

The deserts looked amazing but one spoonful was all I could manage of the mock pavlova (which they charge £4.25 for) a total rip off. There was lot of waste that night. We stayed here recently on a stag do. The hotel came as part of a package, so I have no idea how…read moremuch it actually costs to stay. In terms of the building, this is probably one of the worst hotels I've ever stayed in. Our 4 person room had a bunk bed and two additional beds, crammed in so tightly that you had to side step between them. We were lucky (!) enough to have an en-suite, which had a slide door which did not shut probably. The shower started off freezing cold for the first few minutes before, in a mater of seconds, changing to being painfully hot. Dangerously so in fact; I would not want to let a child use this shower. The other rooms in the hotel share bathrooms, each broken in their own way (toilet impossible to flush, shower hose broken off wall etc.). The place seemed generally dirty. When we arrived we each had to pay a £30 cash deposit, which was only returned after inspection and waiting around for 45 minutes on departure. They made a big fuss about how good their English breakfasts were: sadly these fell well below expectations, featuring only the bear minimum of beans, eggs, bacon, sausage, tomato and toast (no mushrooms, black pudding, hash browns here!). The ingredients all seemed to be from an economy/value supermarket range, and no-one in our group could stomach the sausages. They have a pool table in the front longe, and also an outside picnic table. The front of the hotel offers nice sea views. They also have a licensed bar (drinks poured from cans but at pub prices). On a positive note, the staff were genuinely friendly people, and seemed interested in where we were planning to go out, and what activities we had planned during the day (surfing). As such, I think this saved The Ridge from being 1 star - however, if it costs more than about £20 pppn to stay there I would definitely give this place a miss.
