There used to be another karate school in Schoolside Plaza before Mr. Price's school was there. We…read moreare talking sometime in the EARLY 90's. It was a tie quan do school. Anyway, my friend, who was a student at the old school, told me that Mr. Price and the owner of Schoolside Plaza were friends, so the owner of Schoolside Plaza kept raising the rent for the Tie quan do school so that the owner could no longer afford to rent out the space for his school. The teacher of that school was then forced into giving lessons out of his garage, and a lot of his older students who had gone off to college, came back from college and couldn't find their old instructor, so with a lack of income and students, eventually that teacher had to give up instructing martial arts all together. So, Mr. Price then moved into the old teacher's studio space and began his school. When I heard that story, from a friend of mine who wasn't the type of person to lie to me, it only helped confirm what I had already learned about Mr. Price. The guy knows his art...that's for sure. But personality wise...he's not the best. I've watched him ask the class, "If they thought, the training there was just an activity that they enjoyed and helped them blow off steam while going about stressful daily life or a way of life." When one person dared to raise his hand for the "hobby" answer, Mr. Price gave them a small lecture about how this "was a way of life." Another time, we stuck our hands up on punching bags and kept them there, we were supposed to be handcuffed to a fence, and pretended dogs were nipping at our feet, so we had to do back kicks. Now, I am all for being dedicated if you are going to do martial arts or anything else, but with those past two examples...I think it's important to be strong in the dojo, but also to keep your training in perspective with reality, so no Steven Seagul movie scenarios like the handcuffed to the fence thing, and go about the rest of society and your daily life without strutting around like a modern day samurai. I cannot stress how much Mr. Price and most of the other kenpo instructors that came to our school took themselves WAY too seriously and acted like they were on the outside looking in at the rest of society, everyone else outside of the school, as being ignorant and just waiting to be rescued incase anything bad happened. For instance, I heard one of higher ranking students telling someone that when Mr. Price or some of the other teachers go into a restaurant they all have to sit against the back wall to watch the entrance incase anything bad happens..." ???REALLY??? Can't you just go out to eat and enjoy your meal?!!? Also, Mr. Price will not hesitate to embarrass you in front of the class (HAPPENED TO ME NUMEROUS TIMES) when asking questions that he didn't like. Instead of him politely stepping back from the situation and saying, "Yes or no." I'd get, "EXCUSE ME..." Like he couldn't believe I 'd have the tenacity to ask a question. Or, he'll criticize your clothes( YEP, that, too.) and he cannot take a joke. I CANNOT EMPHASIZE THIS ENOUGH!!! I've been around him many times in class and also outside of class and while I'm trying to talk and hold a conversation to lighten the mood, I just had some guy ignoring me like I said nothing. But when he makes a joke in class, no matter how lame and containing no punch line it was, then I'm supposed to be falling over and cracking a fake laugh. Um, no...So yeah, it says the school is closed now. Knowing what Bryan Price did to the other teacher I don't feel bad if it's true. Lastly, the main lesson I learned from my approximate two years at his school is stay away from karate people, most are meat heads who want to be tough and kick your head off, are lame un-married people bored with life who need something to do besides stay at home and talking to their cat Mittens, or are sooo completely withdrawn from reality that they are having constant fantasies about how their life is an action movie and they have to be ready to save the day by beating people up. God, I am sooo glad I am older and know better now!!!
