I recently went into this shop for the first time. I was pleasantly surprised by how much inventory there was for bikes, parts, accessories and apparel. A warm greeting welcomed me when I went in. When I had questions, they were answered thoroughly and patiently. As I strolled the shop, I had the fortune of meeting Jeff the owner. He was very accomodating and took time to share industry insight with me relative to my questions. We actually stopped by Open Air the Saturday before Memorial Day to get our tires aired up in bikes we had borrowed. As you can imagine it was a bit different w/ Covid. It was good to see everyone wearing masks. We ended up getting helped by a man named, Jeff. He was extremely helpful and not at all pushy. He spoke to us in regular terms and didn't make us feel stupid for not knowing all the bike lingo. Although there was someone who wanted to speak w/ him, he didn't rush us and encouraged us to ask any and all of our questions. He was so great that we ended up purchasing 2 bikes from him that day. What's even more amazing is he ended up building both bikes for us that evening so we could enjoy them for the holiday. We later found out that he was the owner. Open Air is DEFINITELY our new bike store. We tell everyone we know how fantastic Jeff and his team are every chance we get. read more

I went to this place two weeks ago and got a tire switched, I thought they were okay. I called them this morning and this guy said come on in, so I rode my bike across town to have both tires switched, the guy at the place was kind of rude when I brought up that I had just been in a couple weeks ago he's like oh oh well, and??? He also told me that they weren't going to switch the tires today and 50 minutes before that, The guy told me to come in and that they can get it done quick.. That's not the way to do business. Remember when toilet paper was the "thing" that everyone was snapping up left and right like the word is ending? Well, this year, it's bikes. And don't get me wrong, I'm super happy that people are getting outside more - it's actually a GREAT thing...unless you want to buy a bike. HOWEVER, you occasionally get a gem of a place like this that won't just sell you a bike simply because you're a human with money looking for a bike. I worked with Katie, who really helped me understand what my mountain bike riding style IS, and how that translates to today's bike offerings. I came down from Santa Barbara and ended up with a great bike for my husband, and I have one that's coming for me based on a test ride/chat with Katie, and I feel VERY confident in my purchase. I didn't want to just get a mountain bike, I really wanted one that felt like the right bike FOR ME. The only reason that this place isn't getting a full 5 star review is that they need to pick the place up - it's almost impossible to socially distance from anyone because their showroom is just overwhelmed right now. Looks like they're up to their elbows in repairs...again, it's GREAT that people are getting outside for exercise...but it was hard to maneuver around in there. If you sent your bike in for repair, be timely in your pick up...YOU can really help them! read more

Super helpful knowledgeable staff. Although I've only been there once, I was impressed by the help that Mark gave me. I was looking for shoes, and he went above and beyond. It was clear that he didn't have a profit-centered focus, but instead a customer-service one. As far as the place itself, it's got much more of a mom & pop feel. Things are not perfectly spic and span, and the displays feel a little cluttered - but those are things that are secondary, in my opinion. We stopped in to discuss a new bike for my gf and he suggested that we come back with her bike to help him understand what she doesn't like about it. He explained he may be able to make some adjustments or change out some components rather than sell us a new bike. They are bicyclists, know cycles & equipment, are personable, helpful, no pressure. Plus the fixing bikes area is in the middle of the shop. So they're working on bikes, I guess they take turns or who knows how that works, but when you come in someone will help when you need help. And not pester you. I like this place. read more

I just moved back to Ventura and have found my "new" Bike Shop. I'm in Sales and a small business owner. When I see employees going out of there way to make customers feel like VIP's, I like to acknowledge those responsible for the "experience". I showed up a week ago and asked for service on my eBike. Mark & I had some great dialog regarding the repair, made some minor adjustments and asked me if I could come back in a week becuase these guys were slammed. Rather than holding on to my bike a week, based on Marks recommendation I was able to continue riding the bike throughout the week and then brought the bike back for the schedule repair, which was completed within 24 hours. These guys know bikes and the ART of interacting with customers. Mark set the service up for success by booking the appointment out a week, Roger & John worked on the repair. When I picked up the bike, Mark asked me about the product I was using to lube my chain. Mark took the time to instruct me how to properly lube my chain and explained the pro's and con's of the different lubes they offered, again making me feel like a VIP. My friends and I had decided on a spontaneous bike ride Saturday morning near the beach and were almost there until the chain on my bike came loose. My bike was missing a bolt and after two failed attempts of trying to fix it on our own, we found this place was the closest bike shop. I didn't see any designated parking lot but there was lots of street parking right in front. My friends and I brought the bike in and someone helped us right away. We waited about 15 minutes and a younger gentleman brought us our bike and said there was no charge for placing the chain back on and fixing the missing bolt. Incredible experience at Open Air Bicycles. I had a pretty bad crash on day 4 of riding from SF to San Diego. My rim was snapped in 3 different places, my disk break was destroyed, and I had no idea if there was any other damage to my bike. I called before going in and Katy said they could help. I walked in with a busted wheel and road rash. Not only did Katy and the guys at the shop take care of my bike, but they offered me water, a place to sit, a jacket to help with the adrenaline shivers, and comforting words. I appreciated everyones thoughtfulness and consideration. Best experience I have ever had at a bike shop. I wish I lived closer! I will definitely be back when I am in the area! Purchased a $700 bike black brand specialized roller a few years back and enjoyed the bike ever since. However, just left the shop and I wanted just to put air on the tires so the gentleman with long hair let me borrow shops black pump. Walked back 2-3 times trying to figure out the right air pressure to pump in my bike tires and needed help. That same gentleman advised me the numbers should pump up if you have the pump on properly. He obviously knew I had no experience in using it. With that being said he still did not want to take 10 seconds of his time to help me simply put air on the tires. Common courtesy does not exsist in this shop. Will not be coming back. Instead of simple assistance I was asked if I wanted to purchase a similar $40 pump? read more

Very sad, Jayne and I bought our bikes and Amelia's bikes here. We had been regular customers before the pandemic as well as friends with Jon Avery the previous owner. We like to support local business but we will not return here. We are in height of pandemic with now young people getting sicker from the variants. I was there with Amelia who is susceptible at 15 years old. The cashier was maskless. When I asked him "Why don't you wear a mask?" he says, "I never get sick." I asked if he was concerned that he could infect others, such as my 15 year old? His answer, "doesn't matter, I never get sick". Amelia was as stunned as I was to his inability to be part of a caring society. We will not be returning. read more

I wanted to buy a new bike a year ago at a local shop. Mario determined what brand and type I needed. I am essential worker so I could wait due to working many hours. My bike arrived and I am very happy with my new bike and service. Mario spent two hours with me making sure I understood everything about the bike and I purchased some add on (rack, lights,mirror, water bottle holder, kick stand). Today I picked up my bike and Mario knew I wanted a bike rack for my car. He spent another hour making sure the rack fit. Then he marked the rack with nail polish so I knew the correct set-up. Next, he had me videotape putting the rack on from start to finish. Finally I drove home with my new bike. Wow what store makes time for this service. This is a small , busy, and crowded at times Bike shop. If you are concerned with Covid call and ask salesperson to meet you outside. They will gladly bring you what you need. Had the 4in fat tire tubes to get my bike in action for the rest of our vacation but also recommend inserts to protect the tubes from further damage in the future. This place is amazing. The employees are all so helpful, easy-going, fun to talk to, talented, and incredibly knowledgeable. Pretty much walking encyclopedia's of bikes and best practices and strategies for bike care!! Wow they amaze me. They also stayed after-hours for me and was sure that they did the best job as they waited for me to take it on a test cruise around the block. He was SO patient with us (being two newbies) and he really took the time to teach us and answer our questions, no matter how silly they were. We didn't buy bikes that day, but we did go back a few times while we thought about what we wanted.
