I rarely write reviews, but since Ono never responded to my email on the matter, I feel it's my duty to inform you all of what happened last month.
I went for lunch at Ono with a friend, having been there before and enjoying my meal. I ordered the seared tuna with sprouts salad and a sparkling water. We had an enjoyable lunch until about 5 minutes after I finished eating. I suddenly felt extremely hot and noticed that my face and body had become bright red. I had a throbbing in my head, and my heart started racing. Scared and confused, we got the check, and I called my husband to come and meet us. By that time, I was extremely hot and noticeably red, a little shivery, and downright terrified. Keep in mind, I have no food allergies and have eaten all the foods in my dish many many times. When it was clear that whatever the issue was not going away, we proceeded to the ER. The doctors took one look at me and admitted me on the spot, hooked me up to an IV, gave me an ECG, and had to give me cortisone, fluids, and epinephrine to get me back to "normal". I ended up having to spend a night in the hospital. It was awful.
I kept insisting that I don't have food allergies (which no one believed by the way), and took it on myself to do some research. Long story short, I've been cleared of any food allergies by an allergist here, and have come to the conclusion that it was actually food poisoning from the fish. Histamine toxicity (http://emedicine.medscape.com/article/1009464-overview) can occur when fish is not properly handled or refrigerated, allowing an overgrowth of bacteria which secrete histamine. Histamine is not inactivated by heat or cooking, and when a person ingests the contaminated fish, they have a reaction similar to an allergic reaction. My symptoms match exactly what is listed, and do not match your typical 'allergic' reaction or anaphylaxis.
I emailed Ono after the incident to let them know, because it's critical they are aware that their fish is contaminated. It might not be them - it could be their fish provider - but in any case, Ono is responsible for ensuring the well being of their customers.
I urge you not to have the tuna (or any fish there for that matter). I certainly will not be returning, and find it disappointing and shameful that they did not respond to my email. I am not looking for anything aside from an apology and a promise to look into the matter. I was lucky, it could have been worse. read more
