The causeway is made up of FIVE bridges and includes an unusual intersection over the water that makes up a three-way bridge. I can't say I've ever seen one of those before! The causeway has four fixed bridges and one drawbridge that goes over the Chincoteague channel. The new bridge was completed in 2010. As you're driving out to Chincoteague, you'll wonder what all those huge satellite dishes are that are behind some very impressive barbed wire fencing and razor wire with very prominent "do not trespass" signs. That's the NASA Wallops Flight Facility that includes a carrier landing practice runway as well as the secondary rocket launch base. Yeah, no stopping along the road and definitely don't try to climb the fence! https://www.nasa.gov/centers/wallops/events/viewing_launches.html There is no toll to cross the Causeway. Note that it is a single lane in each direction with very limited passing zones. The traffic here gets absolutely stupid during high season. [Review 18131 overall - 1396 in Virginia - 1653 of 2022.]

"Never knowing my right foot from my left My hat from my…read moreglove I'm too misty and too much in love" (Johnny Mathis) As we were driving down the main drag on Chincoteague Island, I caught sight of an imposing blackened bronze statue of a horse, which I soon learned was from a children's book named "Misty of Chincoteague" written by Marguerite Henry in 1947. Now since I spent my childhood reading Twilight Zone books and biographies of Mickey Mantle, I had never heard of Misty. The book tells the story of a Spanish ship that wrecked off Virginia's coast so the hundreds of the ponies being transported had to swim to nearby islands to survive. They lived as feral horses for centuries and are still there to this day. One of the horses was adopted by a young brother and sister and named the Chincoteague mare "Misty". The book was so popular that it spawned five sequels, the last of which was written in 1992. The statue shows Misty galloping along a beach next to a rooster and a duck. The statue and plaque were dedicated by the Misty of Chincoteague Foundation on June 14, 2006, to honor the upcoming 60th anniversary of the book's publication. What a cool and interesting sight to see!

There's no delivery service, no mail carriers so all of the 400 residents come to the post office to pick up their mail! The post master knows every person by name on this unusual island that typically only has golf carts and bikes for vehicles... there's maybe a truck or two on the island. There's a rustic, coastal vibe to this building with its distressed weathered deck and handicap ramp. Any news that needs to be shared is posted on the post office front door, whether it's a funeral or an upcoming event. It's about 12 miles from Maryland's mainland and has a mailboat running most days. The townspeople meet the boat and help unload the mail and packages. You've gotta love this neighborly system! Tangier Island is in Chesapeake Bay and it's only accessible by boat or ferry or plane. We've taken the ferry from Reedville, VA but there are other ways to get there as well. It's known to be eroding with rising sea levels and it's expected to become a wetland within a decade or so. It has an interesting history, and I've enjoyed visiting this unique island. There's not much only island, the Post office, a grocery store, a museum, a couple of restaurants and shops, and you can pretty much walk the town in 20 minutes. The woman giving tours was finishing up with another group when we arrived and when they finished up she promptly started with my group. I cannot stress how cool the tour was. The woman who gave the tour was incredibly knowledgeable of the Ker family as well as other prominent eastern coast families. We loved that we could actually go in the rooms and touch and see parts of the house that, in other historic places, would be roped off. Not everything in the house was original, but they did a good job of placing furniture that would have been in the house in the appropriate rooms. If you opt out of the tour or can't get it, make sure to check out the mastodon tooth and vertebrae found on the grounds. They seem out of place amongst the 19th century relics, but man were they cool. Also make sure to check out the beautiful gardens to the back and side of the house. Overall a great experience if you love historic houses and if you find yourself in the area!
