Since it is only about 20 miles from the bridge tunnel up the shore (one of my favorite places on earth!), we decided to check it out. SO glad we did! And since admission is free, it made the bridge tunnel toll worth it! When you walk in you are greeted by the most friendly docent who gives you a brief background of the museum and what it's about. She told us they have several films and asked if we wanted to watch any of them. We did - "Our Island Home" gives you a terrific view of what life on Hog Island was like before it was abandoned from people who were actually born there. After whatever movie(s) you want to watch, you are "free range" to explore the museum. It is SO well done. I could have roamed around for longer than the 2 hours we were there (but I'm a museum reader - I have to check out everything!). Definitely allow yourself a couple of hours to explore. The exhibits are fantastic and laid out well. All artifacts were donated or on loan from actual island families - they don't purchase their artifacts. I like that. Shows the love for the community that these people have. Definitely check out the attic! There are hands on things for the kids - it's hot up there in the summer though! I was fascinated by the twisted chimney (not going to tell you why it was built that way - you'll have to go find out for yourself!). This is a GREAT little stop if you are looking for something cool to do on your way up or down Rt. 13 on your way to your vacation or a great day trip from the VA Beach area. With all their many activities and programs, we will definitely be back!

This facility is on the road to Chincoteague Island but has limited hours and has rarely been open…read moreduring my trips to the region. So I saw an opportunity and stopped in. I just wasn't impressed. As an organization, NASA has lost a lot of its luster in the public eye, but just on a practical level, this building was basically just one hall with some exhibits, a rooftop deck where you couldn't see much, and a movie theater basically playing short, vague ads for what they do on a loop. The site seemed dated; there is some majesty in exploring old ruins sometimes, but looking at a rocket with lichen growing it just doesn't activate that same sense of wonder for me. It's free, but I just took a modest look around and figured I'd rather be at the beach. My hope is that the substantive business that NASA does in the area is worthwhile even if this visitor center doesn't offer much.

The have an elevator to carry you to the roof top, providing a great area view and the Military has a practice field close by and frequently fly over this site. You will be educated about many significant projects and missions carried out at Wallops. They offer videos and interactive areas that are very engaging. They have a nice gift shop to purchase patches, clothing and other souvenirs. Please check hours of operation, they aren't open but a few days a week.

There is a welcome hut where they give out maps and collect the suggested $5 donation. We walked some of the woods to view some of the sculptures. Several were very attractive and other pieces were not as striking. There is a fairy garden type play area where a number of kids were running around. We walked through the main arts building. We saw some exhibits and the gift shop. On the whole, it was smaller than I expected, but we did not walk all of the paths. I'm glad we took a look. I would be interested in returning when they have a festival or for the holiday lights.

But, I splurged over an hour shooting photos, playing Pokemon Go, and shooting video here! I'd LOVE TO COME BACK AGAIN! Be careful where you park, the roads are narrow, and you could block the ways in or out, and be careful of incoming cars, or outgoing cars, because u don;t see or hear them coming or going, and many people made this mistake. Sometimes, it's totally dead, and no one around, then suddenly lots of people show up. I was there for over an hour, in this cycled through like this a lot! i do hope I can return some day!
