Our dog Sydney about to go into the best museum ever
    Michelle G.

This was truly a wonderful museum and the staff, ALL of the staff, were sincerely some of the nicest most helpful and accommodating people we've come across in ANY museum. They not only allow dogs, they all but ASKED us to bring them on the property and in the buildings. I'm gonna make several posts with some of the pictures I took. This is worth the short trip. Gorgeous building, perfectly decorated, informational, interesting, and some wonderful short movies to help us learn all about life on the Barrier Islands. After we toured we drove across the highway to Machipongo Trading Company and grabbed some sandwiches and chips and brought them back to the Center to eat on the grass near the field of crops.

    History is beautiful!

We took my sister out for her birthday and the Lost Planet was on her list of what she wanted to do…read moreand we did. We arrived as soon as they opened, the girls behind the counter were very sweet and informative. They were very matter of fact type of energy so it might rub some people the wrong way. Reasonably priced. I wouldn't suggest that anyone under 12 try the upstairs portion. They do have a mirror maze though for all ages. They will ask you to wear plastic gloves though. I would say it could take between 30 minutes to an hour depending on how many people are there or how long you stay in one area. There is a photo op room first; they say it's two but really one large area where a worker (our girl was funny as heck) will help you take photos and offer suggestions. There are a few other rooms with different aspects that are super cool or interactive. I'd share exactly but wouldn't want to ruin the surprise. They also do a "scavenger hunt where you take a photo of the item and at the end get a surprise. It's just a small kids trinket (like a squishy). They could use some updates and fresh paint. Biggest suggestion is having a broom for the confetti. Picking them up with your hand was gross. It's definitely a one type thing but still fun. Overall enjoyed our experience.

It's tiny and gimmicky but my sisters and I had a blast. I could see if there were a lot of people…read morehow it wouldn't be enjoyable because you're trying to get pictures with strangers also trying to do the same thing. It's priced a bit high for what you get, but if you go with the right people at the right time, you can get tons of goofy pictures. The people that worked there were helpful and friendly. Wish there were more photo opportunities and less strangers.

What a wonderful actively being restored historical site where you can REALLY get up close with…read morehistory.. go ahead touch it... it's okay. Much of the home is not restoration and only has a few Kerr family items but all is decorated to period with a few local artist donations to help the restoration cause. Free entry and tour... but there are containers for donations.. no one asks but it only seems right to drop it in. Great grounds... stop by for an hour it won't be wasted.

The woman giving tours was finishing up with another group when we arrived and when they finished up she promptly started with my group. I cannot stress how cool the tour was. The woman who gave the tour was incredibly knowledgeable of the Ker family as well as other prominent eastern coast families. We loved that we could actually go in the rooms and touch and see parts of the house that, in other historic places, would be roped off. Not everything in the house was original, but they did a good job of placing furniture that would have been in the house in the appropriate rooms. If you opt out of the tour or can't get it, make sure to check out the mastodon tooth and vertebrae found on the grounds. They seem out of place amongst the 19th century relics, but man were they cool. Also make sure to check out the beautiful gardens to the back and side of the house. Overall a great experience if you love historic houses and if you find yourself in the area!
