We saw where US troops landed in 1944. Lots of monuments & literature here. We walked past the grounded bridge that brought equipment to the beach. Leaving we passed a castle where the German officers stayed & a German cemetery.

This beach is a must see if you are a WW2 person that knows it's history and the historical D-Day event. We got to the beach and parked our car at the designated parking lot. We then walked down to the last remaining bunker the Germans used where tho original gun is still there (obviously inactive) and got to get a view from the Germans perspective. You have to imagine being a young German solider on the hill and seeing hundreds of ships just coming at you and thousands of enemy soldiers about to run up that hill. You would definitely be pissing your pants because you knew your time was up. There was no way the Germans were going to win this battle with the amount of Americans that stormed this beach. Then you walk to the water and see the vast distance our American heroes had to trek across. I would guess the distance between the water and the German bunker lines is at least 10 football fields. It looks so much shorter in the movies. But it's much longer in reality. Definitely a surreal experience to be here at Omaha beach and see the perspective from both the Germans and the Americans.

One of the most memorable trips of my entire time in the military. I got to be part of the 65th anniversary of D-Day. You can read about it, but until you see... really see... what the tides were like and the vantage point the Germans had over the US, you can't understand it. It's a pure miracle we defeated Germany. It was only because of pure numbers of soldiers. The French citizens take very good care of these hallowed grounds. What I found amazing, is they all came running up to me and wanted pictures. They still appreciate what the US did during the war. Again, if you can ever make it here... I highly suggest it. Especially for one of the D-Day anniversary events.

After visiting the powerful and important American Cemetery and the Widerstandsnest 62 we headed down to the beach. Not for a day at the beach - we'd never think of doing that here - but to see and feel the place where so many thousands lost their lives. There's isn't much left of course. Some memorials, info plates. You get a view of the dunes/hills where the Widerstandnester (bunker networks) of the Germans were hidden. Knowing history it's - despite the blue water and the sunshine - a chilling place. For most kids here it seems a beach like any other. Playing, sunbathing, swimming. I can't blame them, they might live close-by and that's their place to be and have fun. It's even dog-friendly in summer. As a grown-up and tourist I'd never even dream though of having a day out at the beach here for fun. It's a too special place for that. Knowing that this beach was covered in blood and bodies. For a local I'd say it's fine. But for a foreigner I would find it a bit strange and maybe even disrespectful having a beachday at this location.

This is long, long over due and I really meant to write this review yesterday - for Veterans Day. My favorite movie is Saving Private Ryan so I couldn't come all the way to France and not visit Omaha beach, Point du hoc and Utah beach. 6/06/44 - on this day many young men landed on this beach to take back France and to start the offensive in Europe. I can't imagine running across this beach under heavy fire and that's why we should give homage to our Veterans of this particular war because they are leaving us one by one as the years roll on. We came on a rainy day and that only added to the experience, going from one bunker to the next or standing in a crater where a bomb had landed. I highly recommend this excursion from Paris - it's probably better if you allow three days for this trip.

If you get a chance wile in France, head out to Normandy. We did a tour through Viator and it was an amazing tour. We saw so many important sights and it was very informative. Highly recommend heading to Omaha beach.

If you're visiting from America, visiting Omaha Beach is a must! The U.S. 1st Infantry Division wade ashore on Omaha Beach on the morning of June 6th, 1944 in Normandy. It was the largest seaborne invasion in history! It was a real privilege to have visited here, as there are multiple memorials dedicated to those whom have sacrificed their lives here. Omaha beach was one of the five sectors of D-Day, which was the Allied invasion of German-occupied France in the Normandy landings during World War II. This is a very peaceful beach now with soft tan sand. When I came here in April of 2018, the weather was overcast, foggy and on the chilly side. There were a lot of school buses that dropped students here on a field trip. It was very peaceful coming here in the month of April, but I can imagine this beach being crowded on every D-Day anniversaries.

If you know any american history or any WWII history, you'll have heard of D day- well, this is the beach and origin as to where this all went down. Omaha Beach is located in Caens, Normandy, France towards the NW Coast. To get there, one would have to take the train/coach out from a major city such as Paris and it's a 3 hour trek out there but totally worth it. Caens is a charming french town with cathedrals, tulips in front of shop houses, bridges, and lots of local charm. You can catch a bus that takes you up to the Omaha Beach. It's actually free to get on the beach and walk around since it's one of those UN/UNESCO protected sites to commemorate the services of the ones who brought victory to the Western Front. Beach- not a a place to go on vacation. Its a bleak but beautiful coastline that screams History on documentary vibe. It's got that Northern Europe feel of long brown yellow sand warm in texture with large cliffs on the side usually softened by plants, flowers, and lovely trails going down with wooden paths, yellow flowers, and tall grasses. When one thinks of that kind of WWII war scene battle field, then this is the epitome of it. There's a monument area with grave stones and large stone arches/walls with commemorates dates and the victories and tell the history. I highly recommend people to come out here as one of their destinations if they are looking for a day trip out of Paris. It's not for everyone, but I think if you had to one epic War place, this is one of them, even if you're not a huge fan of history- to be standing in one of the biggest victory sites in history is worth making a trip to, especially if you see the sea and land fronts that come together to orchestrate this victory.

Thank you, France! Thank you for keeping it clean and open for the children to enjoy yet leaving it alone for quiet respect for the history. Such a beautiful beach deserves to be kept this way. Was pleasantly surprised to see beautiful grass land overlooking it with cows, horses and sheep grazing. Sit, picnic quietly, think and appreciate for a long while. Enjoy the children play but be respectful for the souls that made the place sacred. And free.

Small jar of sand from Omaha Beach.

This was a very humbling experience. There is so much to see that you need a lot of time to see it all. If you did not bring a cup for sand, go to a gift shop and buy a small, glass jar to bring with you to the beach to fill up. There are a few types of jars to choose from that have a label already on them specifying Omaha beach. It is compact and easy to travel with. See picture. Out of our entire European road trip, spending only 5 euros, filling it with sand for free and seeing everything at the Normandy beaches was the best part and is more valuable to me versus had I spent a lot of money on other commemorative items from anywhere else in the world.

In A Nutshell: -Omaha Beach was a very memorable experience for me. -As a U.S. Army veteran, I really wanted to see this beach w/ my own eyes. -While on the beach, I tried to imagine what fellow soldiers experienced as they stormed the beach from the amphibious vehicles. -Just looking at the terrain, the temperature of the water, it really just makes you say "wow". -The brown sandy beaches were a very surprising color to me. -I really didn't know what to expect, but the soft brown sand stuck out. -I took Old Glory w/ me to fly it proudly on the beach. -It took about 1 hour to drive one-way from Deauville. Overall, one thing I learned is that the French will always be grateful for American & Allied intervention on June 6th, 1944.

When my husband and I came to this beach as part of our Normandy / D-Day excursion, there was a solemn feeling. Since it was early October, the weather was really nice, albeit chilly. Sun was out, and barely anyone on the beach itself. Our guide for the day told us the stories of what happened on this beach and it was unbelievable. To imagine the lives that perished that day...and to know that we're alive today because they fought for our freedom. What a miracle and blessing. My husband and I really enjoyed coming here and visiting this memorial site. We feel fortunate. It's one of those must visit sites if you are exploring D-Day beaches, and especially if you're an American!

It really doesn't matter where anyone is from. A visit to Omaha Beach turns out guts upside down and our hearts break all over again. Average age of our soldiers were 24 years old. We've got over 10,500 of our brave American soldiers resting in eternity over there so we can all be home safe.

He paratrooped in at 1:30am on D-Day and landed nearby. I walked Utah Beach and it's flatter with no bluffs here compared to what we saw later at Omaha Beach about 10 miles to the east. I was surprised to learn the difference in the width of the beach between low and high tide is an astounding 450 yards! We saw this beach near high tide, and you'll see from the photos there's not that much beach, but there was on D-Day when they landed near low tide per the plan so that the barricades and mines and such would be visible. So much world-altering history here on the Normandy Beaches, it's all a must-see!
