You cannot see the stage from the apparent standing portion of the bar. Half of the bar is obstructed from the stage, so if you want to actually see the band then I guess you should arrive very early.

And the floor is angled higher towards the back, so the tall-person-syndrome (where a tall person stands in front of you and blocks your view to the stage...) is a lesser problem. However, even with the tilt, this venue is unusually narrow and long. In the far back where the bar stands, one wouldn't be able to see the performers. Imagine...you find a good spot within a packed crowd to stand to see the performers, squeeze your long way through the little crevices among people to get to the bar, wait long to get your drink, and then squeeze your way back AND manage to not spill your drink on someone. It is some test of wills. It might have been an isolated experience for me, but the crowd was slightly aggravating (probably because of the restricted space). I heard people arguing with one another, and some man pushed my arm away when I was trying to take a photo. If you are to catch a specific band and want a less frustrating experience, then go early. For a short person like me, there are areas to stand by the sides of the venue where one can stand higher.

This particular event was standing only and despite the concert being sold out it did not feel cramped. There was a great big bar at the back of the hall and getting drinks was quick and easy. The prices for the drinks were also reasonable and the choices were ok. The acoustics in the venue were quite ok however the sound system in use on the night was a bit raspy and sounded not as clean as I would have expected. Not sure it was the venue or the choice of sound equipment that evening. Happily come back here anyday for a gig or two. Getting here is easy on the train.

Even though I was close to the speakers, the sounds were not overbearingly loud, and the floors did not shake with the bass. Drinks are fairly priced for a music venue. I was there for a rock concert, and to my surprise, people were moshing and crowdsurfing. Security was quite good in catching the crowdsurfers, and no one got hurt during the moshing. Overall, it was a decent experience.

3.5 stars. I dislike…read morelarge venues when it comes to shows, but Kesselhaus (KH) did a decent job appeasing most of my gripes. 1. Large venues = not-so-good acoustics. In this case, KH is like the others. While the sound wasn't horrible, it was hard to hear everything (e.g. couldn't hear the singer well) and sometimes overwhelming with the bass. 2. Large = sterile-looking. On the contrary, KH is visually appealing. A former functional boiler house, many of its apparatuses remained. The additions of metallic chandeliers and colorful neon lights make the venue eye-catching. 3. Packed house in a large venue = full-blown short-person disadvantage (i.e. one sways his/her head back and forth between the crevices of two taller people to catch a glimpse of the performers). We went to a sold-out show, so it was packed. But KH impressed me. On one side of the venue, there was an elevated part with stairs. We were lucky enough to find a place to stand on the stairs, and I no longer had the short-person disadvantage. There is also a balcony (perhaps for guest lists), but it is situated far back from the stage. 4. Large = pricey. That holds for KH.

This is a fine and engaging venue for classical performances. The clever and avante-garde design…read moreadds visual appeal but also creates a sense of an intimate venue while seating a large audience. There might not be a bad seat in the whole place. The seats, by the way, are deeply padded bent-ply with wide armrests (wide enough to share). You will be comfortable here. Food and beverages are available but expensive. I tried the Proseco with Hibiscus Blood. It was terrific. The acoustics are curious. Compared to the lush, warm sound of the Munich Opera House, the sound here is crisp and detailed - perhaps a little bit too crisp and too detailed. The higher registers seems to explode through the room. Sometimes this gives life and punch to the music, but at other times it is the aural equivalent of shining a bright fluorescent light on the Mona Lisa. It must be an unforgiving place for the performers, too. The downside is that the venue itself is not an experience. Historic venues like the Opera House are themselves a feast for the mind and the senses. This venue is about presenting the performance as vividly and clearly as possible - here it succeeds admirably.

We arrived early to stake a place by the sound board, but even at this "prime location" the sound suffered. Moved beyond the sound board (and the bar right behind the sound board -- yes, a bar in the middle of a standing room only venue), only to find we were getting acoustic rebounds off the back wall. Uggh! We felt the band couldn't get off the stage fast enough, nor could we wait to exit ourselves. Disappointed is an understatement. Surely in a city the size of Munich a better concert venue exists?? RS
