One of the true architectural delights of the city centre the wrought iron and stained glass canopy provides a glam entry way to the venerable old theatre, shelter for passersby on a rainy day and somewhere to observe touts/scalpers from if you don't have a ticket for inside.
Thankfully for those of us who bemoan the lack of genuinely interesting landmarks in Dublin the canopy is still with us today. For in 2004 a lorry quite literally crushed it to bits in a piece of maneouvring that would get him a bad review on the 'How's my Driving?' hotline. After much lobbying the designs were sent off to the foundry in Scotland from whence it came originally when ol' cheery-face Victoria was on the British throne.
