The Plough & Harrow is a very old pub situated on an old Roman and London Road. A few years ago it was partially ruined in a flood, but the rebuild has gone a long way to making it one of the best pubs in Tamworth. It has a very large garden, lots of tables, a canopy and outside braziers for nice but chilly spring evenings. The inside has low ceilings, exposed beams and magnolia walls. It's a nice, comfy old English pub feel, but without the tatty standard maroon carpet. There aren't many tables inside, so standing is pretty much a must. The Plough & Harrow gets really busy on weekend nights, and is a haven to the young and trendy Tamworth set (you didn't know they existed, did you?) before they go on to a club. The music is pretty decent, through speakers, and so loud on weekends that talking inside isn't very plausible. The P&H also have a very nice restaurant attached, which I haven't been to, but have heard very positive reviews about -- it's mainly Italianish food with a modern twist. The pub grub here is very good, with some different things (Cajun Chicken Sandwich, YUM), and with excellent chips. I can't rave enough about these chips, which are nearly potato wedges, nicely cooked with delicious seasoning. The main bartender/manager is a really friendly guy, and all the staff are pretty chatty and nice. They often have fun activities, both for adults in the evening and families at the weekends, like an American 4th of July party (yay!), and festivals. They provide accomodation, which some of my friends from the US took advantage of when they came over for my wedding. The rooms are all refurbished and nicely laid out, with comfy beds and decent WCs. Nothing astonishing, exccept when you consider the SUPER CHEAP price. The rooms are all a bit off from the pub, so the noise level also isn't too bad.

We're glad we bothered to go a little bit off the motorway, as it was a lovely place to stop. The food was excellent- a wide variety of pub favourites and more unusual stuff at reasonable prices. The atmosphere was friendly and fairly warm, it was all beautifully clean and quite cosy inside, and it was easily worth spending the 10 minutes driving that it took to get away from Tamworth motorway services. They run a grand pub, full of fun with great local music acts every Friday and most Saturdays. My husband originally strolled into this pub thinking we'd have a laugh at the local cheesy entertainment. However, the songstress, who used to perform at Disney World and with their cruise ships, knocked our socks off singing a bunch of jazz and classics, along with covering the sugar out of Amy Winehouse and The Noisettes. Well impressed like, we was. This pub used to be well known as a drug haven (and not just cannabis), and was known for having the police in nearly every weekend for fights and the like. They had topless bar maids and it was a real dive. In 2005, the current landlords came in and really cleaned the place up. They redecorated, got a bunch of very large local boys in to keep the fighters away, and added a new food menu. Slowly but surely, the place turned around to become a real community pub. It's great for families, and often have carnivals in the summer and hold community events. On the weekends, it's great for adults, as the local bands and singers they get in are absolutely fabulous (especially Partners in Crime, a favourite). The beer is cheap, and they have all the cocktail spirits a girl could want. The best part is the crowd, though. The regulars vary in age from 20-50, and it's definitely not just an old man's pub. It's a favourite of local 20-somethings to frequent before they go out to a club in Brum, and for the less adventurous of us, they often stay open til 2am, at which point we teeter home on 4" heels that seemed like such a good idea at the beginning of the evening. Everyone in the pub is friendly, always good for a laugh, and happy to chat. No fights, no drama, just good clean fun and great music, karaoke and sport during the week. The landlady makes an excellent Sunday Roast, and the wine menu has recently been revamped to add some excellent choices rarely seen in Tamworth!

You approach over a lovely little bridge, which spans one of the areas many canal arteries. The canal runs alongside the pub, and is dotted with beautiful barges and venerable vessels. Clearly then, the pub caters for boating folk, however there's plenty here for us land lubbers to enjoy too. In fact, although the pub lies next to the canal, its elevated position means the garden doesn't benefit as much from the location as other pubs in the surrounding areas. We just popped in for a cheap and cheerful pint of lager, and the pub and the friendly staff, dutifully obliged. But, don't get the wrong impression of this place. This pub does traditional new England just as well as it does traditional olde England. Instead of pies, scratchings and pickled eggs, this boozer provides bhajees, balties and samosas. Yes, the Bulls Head does a range of authentic Indian cuisine to go with its authentic range of English ales. Curry and a pint - it's the norn!

There are so many different seating areas -having not been here before - we didn't know where was best to sit, so we took a spot in the conservatory area, where it was bright and cosy. My eye was caught by the 'Golden Greats'...a 2-course meal for only £4.45 or 3 courses for an extra pound (and only 50p to add a tea or coffee). You choose between breaded mushrooms or soup to start and then choose one of several lighter bite options as your main. I went with the mushrooms and the chilli con carne (with garlic bread). Both were delicious! The chilli was just the right size for lunch, a lighter bite indeed it was. The lads behind the bar were really friendly and checked all was ok with us several times. Everything was well above pub standard. They offer a great covered smoking area out the back, a TV for the news/footy watcher, and a spacious 'easy to park in' car park. Plus there's a quiz machine! We paid just over £26.00 for 2 carveries, tonic water and a lager. The carvery was the worst we had had there. Usually if meat had gone dry they would take the top slice off - it was dry and the beef was hard. The veg trays were no better - must have been left uncovered for a long while. Overall my husband and I both agreed that the meal was very dry and unsavoury and only warm. Both agreed that food could not have been checked or fresh food replaced for a while as it usually is. Needlessless to say we will not visit this carvery again, even though the time of day might have played it's part - if fresh tasty food is what you are looking for, be careful to visit at busy times.
