We lived in China from 2011 to 2020 and this brings back all the fun of Chinese markets with friendly people, lots of Chinese and other languages spoken here. It is a melting pot of international shoppers! Great variety of cooking greens and specialized mushrooms. Also Asian style pots and pans, bowls, plates, and odd kitchen devices. Vegetables are much higher quality than a place like Shnucks and cheaper too! Enormous variety of frozen dumplings, stuffed buns, onion cakes, and others-and they're great and I buy them! I really love to try international market, especially when they offer a lot of fresh produce. I used to always go to seafood city until they shut down and get produce, sauces, and noodles. I like to look up recipes while I'm in the store for things that I don't know how to use them. This encourages me to try new things and there is a lot of that in the store. So much that I would have to go back five or six times a month to even get a month full because there is so much stuff that I want to try. I highly recommend checking the store out if you are a foodie or chef because it will definitely make you a talking to your creativity! read more

Found a little gem today that made my home cook self very happy! Wandered into this Asian market and discovered food treasure! Amazing selection of quality produce at great prices! They had a wonderful meat department with fresh, frozen options of a wide variety of proteins. I also loved that they have quite a selection of home goods / kitchen equipment. Some of the shelves had English translation. Some did not. A lot of items were unknown to me -- makes me want to learn other languages just so I can shop more widely here! The shelves were well stocked, and the aisles laid out as you would expect for a grocery store. There were aisle signs in English, which helped me immensely find what I was looking for -- loose teas, noodles, fresh produce, spices, and proteins (I decided to make broth - fingers crossed!). The parking lot was super busy on a Saturday afternoon with folks of all ages and backgrounds. I needed careful maneuvering around all the people and cars coming and going -- that tells me it's a local favorite. Love it! I was just really happy with the quality of the items, along with the amazing international selection that I bought for the price. I'll be visiting again to explore! read more

This is place just makes me sad. As a Californian who almost exclusively goes to ethnic stores, I'm shocked this place is still up and Seafood City isn't. It smells, it's dark and cluttered. The meat and seafood section is especially heinous. The meat doesn't even look fresh half of the time I'm there. My mom got fish that smelled bad by the time we got home. Keep in mind it's cold now and we had an hour in between that and home. That is not enough time for supposed fresh fish to spoil. read more

This is a large Asian grocery store that has pretty much everything you'll need from fresh seafood, meats, produce and non perishable items. The have a big selection of frozen items, liquor and houseware items like steamers, woks, bowls, plates, etc. The store is clean and well organized. If they don't have it, you probably don't need it. read more

Decent sized and well lit supermarket with a lot of neat Asian ingredients. The fruits smells fresh and meat section is limited but has the essential pork cuts I like (spare ribs, pork belly etc). I love the location because I can shop at 2 asian supermarkets simply by crossing the street! Also, we visited earlier this week & they now have a BBQ section! My wife, an African-American, purchased a watermelon on Wed 9/13 at the Olive Supermarket at 8021 Olive St. By Fri 9/15, the watermelon started to mold and parts of it were getting soft. We attempted to return it on Sat 9/16. I followed the instructions from a cashier about speaking to someone about a refund. We were advised that the refund policy on fresh fruit was 24 hours. The receipt did indicate that in small print if read with a magnifying glass with a light. The print was faded indicating the cash register tape required changing. However, this appeared to be an opportunity to challenge the reasonableness of this arbitrary policy. A 24-hour refund policy should indicate their knowledge of their products are so good that they know what to pull if the product is overage. I'm Asian, a native of St. Louis my entire life, and am aware of the notorious reputation for Asian businesses not to issue cash refunds. The reasons are many but that's a story for another day. I told her not to expect a cash refund but to do an exchange for something priced similarly. What was particularly annoying was the Asian female who was older than the rest of the employees whom I assumed to be a part of the ownership group asked my wife why she picked a "bad watermelon" (which I interpreted to be a racist comment). Really!! My wife is professional so the "hood" didn't rear its ugly head. I didn't hear about this until we were a few miles away but yet not far enough way, I considered returning to the market. It would have been an interesting site to see an Asian go off in my "adopted ethnic origin based on where I grew up" on another Asian in a town with a very small Asian population. The takeaway is to not buy any fresh vegetables, fresh meat, or fresh fish unless you plan to cook it within 24 hours from Olive Supermarket. With the odor that occasionally emanates from the fish area when I shop, it reminded me of Seafood City. Oh yeah, Seafood City closed earlier this spring due to contamination issues. No problem buying canned goods, sauces, dry noodles, etc. I recommend shopping for Asian groceries at Pan Asia Supermarket at Manchester and 141. There's no odor, most everything is fresh. Don't know what their return policy is on fresh foods, etc. Oh yeah, I exchanged the watermelon for a bottle of soy sauce. read more

Barely following covid restrictions. Saw several customers and workers with masks worn with the nose hanging out. Very little organization to keep people safe. I honestly felt violated after leaving here- no regard for social distancing either. I care about my health and that of the people around me too much to go back. They get two stars because I love their vast selection of produce, herbs, hot sauces, noodles and seafood! Im bummed that I won't be back until we're all vaccinated. read more

I lived 3 minutes from here for years, and I'm not sure what took me so long to go in. WOW. We spent a good hour just looking around. I will mention that a lot of products are in Chinese, but they do a good job of labeling the shelf to help. There's so many unique items at good prices (high quality miso, sesame oil, produce) and their seafood section is amazing! I've been told they have the most quality seafood in the area, and I wasn't surprised by that statement when I saw it. They have so many cool, unique items that you can't find in American grocery stores, so don't come in here unless you want to try a bunch of stuff - so many snacks, candies, drinks galore, and pastries. And they have locally made pork buns and dumplings in the frozen section that were bomb. This will be a regular stop for us. I don't usually review grocery stores but this gem was too perfect not to. Oh! And the workers were SO helpful in answering questions, and didn't make us feel stupid for asking simple questions (like how to make the hot pot bags!). Highly recommend. read more

This is an okay Asian grocery store, no frills. I can usually find what I need to cook Vietnamese, Chinese, or Korean dishes here, although sometimes they are out of fresh greens like ong choy (water spinach, rau muong), mint, or Thai basil. (Come to think of it, I can rarely find Thai basil.) They have a seafood counter, where you can get shrimp at a great price compared to say, Schnucks ($5.99/lb vs $10.99/lb)... but you can't be sheepish at the counter and expect someone to just notice you. read more

I just had the worse experience at Olive Supermarket. The Customer service is a 2 out 10 please don't be African American on a Wednesday night at this store. The cashier was extremely rude, I had vegetables and couldn't find any bags where the vegetables were.. i found some later after walking around the store so i just sat them in my cart. As i approached the register, the cashier yells " YOU CANT HAVE THOSE" .. i explained that i needed them for my vegetables, he says " you can have one, here" no thanks for coming.. not even a receipt. 0.5 out of 10 i don't recommend.. imiss Seafood City, never had this experience there read more

If I had written this review when I first moved to St. Louis, I might have given Olive Supermarket a 2 or a 3. It used to be much more cramped and didn't have adequate lighting, which made it seem dark and dingy. Now, however, since their renovation, it is probably on par with Seafood City right across the street. The major differences are 1) Olive Supermarket has a smaller seafood section, 2) it's slightly smaller overall, and 3) Cube Tea Studio is attached to it. Otherwise I feel that the prices, selection, and quality are about the same. Previously, I always preferred Seafood City (if I didn't want to make the trek out to Pan Asia). Now if I have a craving for boba before/during/after grocery shopping, I will go to Olive Supermarket. Great job putting a decent boba place in the building! read more

It's relatively big in size and lots of isles to walk.. it's kind of shady chinese grocery store that has some expired products laying around. Some mochi I bought tasted old and dry. They don't have a lot of produce like fruits and vegetables. They are really good if you're looking for Asian style meat--like thin pork belly, sliced rib eye, chicken feet, chicken liver, pork ear, etc. they have a huge fish section in the back if you're looking for seafood. (But there's a huge seafood market across the street so might as go there) read more

I would be careful buying products at this supermarket because some of the products are expired so make sure to check expiration date. It amazzes me how you can still sell your products when it's expired, and the store decided to have the expired product marked off "on sale" even though those products should be just thrown away. read more

Ok you all I'm going to be honest. I go here a lot. This is honestly my favorite Asian market to go to.1 because they have all the Asian food. I love getting steam buns and ramen from here. 2nd they have bubbletea. I appreciate they were one of the first place to respond to covid. By providing PPE. The reason why I have them 3 stars is when you walk in it smells really bad but it's not just that it's a reason why you don't walk in schnucks and smell the deli section. I don't like the way some of the meat look. So it makes me nice how sanitary they are with fresh meat. read more

Now this could be because all of the politicians bullshit blocking stuff. But I stood in this place for an hour waiting on Fresh Salmon Fillets to come out. The sweet guy didn't speak much English and my Spanish is none, so I walked over to the sign and pointed. He wanted to sell me yesterday's leftovers, no sweet I don't do leftovers. So I stood around waiting about 45 minutes. It was 4 guys standing around just talking, and the one with the long hair kept pulling his mask down for some odd reason. They kept looking at me and I just stood there waiting. So now I've been in this store 1 hour and 15 minutes and I'm like ok I'll go across the street and see if they have fresh fish to sale me. Now this store opens at 9 am, I normally have to wait until 10 am to get the salmon. I'm like let me be smart and come at 10 am so I can get the salmon and bounce....Nope! Here it is 11:34 am no fresh salmon is out still. I'm salty about this because this place was once beautiful, they enforce masking wearing this whole pandemic and the Fish was always fresh. I don't know if its because of new stuff but the look has fallen apart and not everything is fresh. Old Fruits and Fish now.... come on! You had high amazing standards, now they are like in the toilet. I'm in the parking lot writing this review hoping if I go back in the Fresh Salmon will be out by now! read more

What a great supermarket that is Asian authentic place to be at! The location is really nice and big inside. You can get a lot of authentic Asian goods and items that other groceries stores do not have. Also one if the best sea food counters in all of STL! You can get both live and dead fresh sea food! We saw live blue crabs, lobsters, live shrimp, live frogs and many other items. The meat counter was really nice as well! If your looking for specific items they have a lot of them and you can also request items there as well! Only issue that I experienced is the smell is strong from the fish counter. Also there only have three cash registers which was interesting because the place was packed and it was tough for people to get through the lines. All in all it was a really fun experience. The shop itself isn't very big, but through some warping of space it stocks pretty much everything you need for Chinese cooking. Fresh fish, noodles & veggies, all kinds of oriental (Chinese, Thai, Japanese, Korean...even Indian) ingredients, sake, frozen dim-sum and a butchery counter. It's a bit cramped and not all staff are friendly. Probably the most crowded supermarket too. Much effort has been made in re-designing the layout of the supermarket, but the long queues still remain weekends and Chinese festivals. So expect to queue. Also be aware of the reek from the butchery and seafood counter, and big foolish flies that constantly get electrocuted by the bug zappers.... The place doesn't take American Express or Discover credit cards. They newly opened a small Chinese restaurant called Yummy 17 on the side. read more

I bought a bottle of loquat syrup I had been looking for but it was sticky on the underside and when I placed it on the counter at home it all leaked out. Have you ever had to make a batch of guac that day but don't have some avocado stored in a brown paper back in a cool dark place for the past week? Sure. We all have. The thing about the Olive Farmer's market and most Chinese markets in general is that they get ripe (ready to eat) produce that's going to go bad sooner than the stuff at the nearby Schnuck's. So stuff like persimmons (though WAY cheaper than elsewhere) won't stand the test of time in your fridge. The same goes for avocado. But hey. I'll deal with some dark spots if it means that I can make some guac or avocado smoothies as soon as I get home. read more

The only place in St Louis so far with the fresh jackfruit. It's not really convenient place to shop, narrow aisles especially at the produce section. It needs better lights and bright shiny floor to be looked more attractive. Most of the products are more expensive than the Global Market. We would really like to try some sweets or cooking utensils but most of the directions/instructions are still in Chinese/Korean. This is the quintessential asian supermarket, arguably one of the best in St. Louis! They have mostly everything you need. Groceries, including asian produce, a variety of snacks, some ready to eat appetizers, alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages, pastries, and even beauty products like face masks and shampoo. However like most asian markets, it is quite dingy with crowded aisles and poor lighting. Price is fair and they provide an itemized receipt which you don't always see. This establishment is absolutely and clearly fullfills the stereotype of Asain-Americans not wanting/liking/respecting African-Americans. Everytime I go there the older cashier spits in the trash can before she checks me out and spits when I am finished. I asked my sister in-law was that common/normal (native of Japan). She said it is a sign of hatred/disrespect/dislike/etc. Wow!!!! Take my money and spit?!? Wow?!?!? I am going back Jay's on So. Grand or United Provisions. They respect the customer. I've been to Olive Supermarket several times now. If you can get past the various odors in the store it is a pleasant shopping experience if you're prepared to take your time looking and taking things in. There are literally 1000s of items in here! My favorite things are the teas, oils, spices, and anything with Hello Kitty on the package! Particularly impressive is the noodle aisle and all of the different varieties of frozen dim sum. I have been here when the staff is very friendly and when they won't even acknowledge my existence. The restaurant here has been on my list of places to try for a while and today I noticed they have a whole Boba Tea shop. I will make a stop in there next time! This is basically what would be an average or slightly below-average supermarket in China, which makes it the best Chinese supermarket in St. Louis. It also has a random assortment of other asian foods. Produce: revolving selection of greens and other vegetables that you won't find elsewhere (except maybe at Jay International or Global Foods), but items aren't always in the best shape. It's also happened to me a couple of times that they were out of something really common, like green onions or ginger. Butcher: I always pick up some of their great fatty ground pork, and they appear to have most of the cuts of pork / beef / chicken one would normally use in asian cooking. Seems pretty cheap too. A crazy selection of Chinese pastes, sauces, condiments, etc: yes, they have this. This is really what this place has over Jay International and Global Foods. You're not going to get to choose between thirty different kinds of chili oil or whatever at those places. Freezer section: as someone else mentioned, tasty homemade frozen potstickers. I suspect that a number of the lower-rent Chinese spots around town use these. Lots of other random, unidentifiable stuff. Seafood: some of it looks sketchy, some of it looks fresh. Olive Supermarket has been my go to grocery store for all things Asian as far as food is concerned for many many years. They've changed a bit over the past few years, somewhat for the good, but not always. Although I faintly remember a time when I could clearly see what was on the shelf in front of me now the interior lighting is almost non existent. I'm not certain why this is the case. Maybe their electric bill is equal to the national debt or maybe they don't want their customers to see what they are purchasing. I don't know. I do like shopping there. The employees can be few and far between but they're usually friendly and helpful. I really think that their selection of produce is better than their competition across the street. They also have more loose items that you can select but you can always ask to get a smaller amount if needed. I do hope they either increase the number lights or at least increase the lumens per bulb! read more

I still love this place! I still come here to buy potstickers and pre-cooked eel. They recently shifted everything around, but some how, their organization still makes sense! I know where everything I want is and can figure out where to find anything else. The people working here are friendly to me. I came here to get EVERYTHING i needed for hotpot the other day and the lady at the register was joking with me to invite her over. This place carries all sorts of asian snacks! I especially like the tiny packets of poprocks (not poprock brand) I can find here. Thus far, I've dragged many friends here for their chinese cooking education. We're always able to find what we need and my friends like to take pictures of the packaging for future use. It was, is, and continues to be one of my staple grocery stores in St. Louis. read more
