The building is gorgeous as well and has a long history; History: jail Evansville is rich in exquisite examples of 19th century American Architecture. The Vanderburgh County Jail and Sheriff's Residence at 208 N.W. Fourth Street is an excellent example from this period. This castle-like fort, designed by architect Henry Walters, was modeled after the Castle of Lichtenstein in Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany. Therefore, the structure is familiar to Evansville's German-born residents. This Gothic-inspired building was originally crafted from stone, which simplified its construction a good deal. Evansville's natural environment has rich subsoil, which combined with abundant rainfall and high mean temperatures, yields an abundance of stone, sand, and fine clay for bricks. Evansville's prime location along the Ohio River also allowed a direct shipment route for imported stone products. In addition, natural deposits of coal and iron in the area provided inexpensive means of operating brick kilns and iron foundries. The building itself is designed to invoke fear in the observer. Its exterior consists of step-gables, projecting turrets, crenelated roof lines, simulated portcullis, and a central keep, or rounded tower. The entrance presents pointed arches to lengthen the appearance of this part of the building. All of these elements add to the castle-like appearance of the structure. The Vanderburgh County Jail is also connected to the former Courthouse, which lies across the street, via an underground dungeon-like tunnel. During the time of the jail's use, the tunnel served as a passageway to transport prisoners to and from court. Presently, however, no nervous inmates are forced to make the tedious walk down the tunnel, nor are they required to sleep in the jail's less than spacious cells. The building now houses commercial offices. However, one cell still remains to allow modern visitors to take a look and imagine what life may have been like in the old Vanderburgh County Jail. The building was closed when we were there but it is FREE to walk around and take photos.

There is a nice river road that you can drive along and the small main street town is lovely. The Pope County Courthouse is a large lovely building from 1816. We parked and walked around the grounds and I took some great photos. Brief history of the building: Pope county was established January 10, 1816 from portions of Gallatin and Johnson Counties. The county seat was originally Sarahsville which was renamed Golconda in 1817 and has continued in Golconda since. The brick courthouse was built 1872-1873 and little has changed on its exterior appearance since its construction. They were getting ready for an annual festival that weekend on the grounds of the courthouse lawn. I really enjoyed this small historical town. I can't wait to go back again.

I am hoping that someone saved the building and is using it for something for the community. History of the building: The Coliseum was erected as a tribute to the men of Vanderburgh County who fought in the American Civil War and Spanish-American War. After several old buildings were torn down, the cornerstone of the 66,000-square-foot facility was laid May 9, 1916. Construction concluded in March 1917 and the Coliseum was formally dedicated April 18, 1917 right around the time the United States was joining World War I. The original construction cost $180,000. The neoclassical coliseum was designed by Shopbell & Company and provided the community with its first modern facility for conventions and other public gatherings. The ceremonial aspect of the building was heightened by placing the structure directly on an axis with Fourth Street. Rockport native George H. Honig created two heroic monuments that flank the entrance. The Spirit of 1865, on the left, represents victory for the Union. The Spirit of 1916, on the right, shows the reflective elderly veterans of the Civil War Once considered the premier location for events in Evansville, the Coliseum was seen as dated and small when Roberts Municipal Stadium was built in the mid 1950s. When a push for "urban renewal" involving demolitions occurred in the city, the Coliseum was threatened. A "Save the Coliseum" campaign was developed and the same organization that helped save the Old Vanderburgh County Courthouse stepped in. In 1919 a 4,000 pipe concert organ was installed as a memorial to Prof. Milton Z. Tinker, for years supervisor of music in the local public schools. At the time of its installation it was among the largest municipal pipe organs in the world. In 2013, the University of Evansville purchased the pipe organ, dismantled it, and put it into storage. The University hopes to restore it to full operating condition sometime in the future.

There's another photogenic white squirrel statue and this is such a friendly town if you stand next to this squirrel for even just a moment, some local will offer to hop out of their car and take a PIC of you with your phone. I grew up in Chicago so I initially thought this was a non-violent robbery attempt but instead this was a sincerely friendly encounter. It was so unusual to me that I hung around for a bit to observe and one by one and two by two other tourists stopped near the squirrel and other locals stopped to help them take pictures. There were a lot of tourists because of the total eclipse (of the sun not the heart), but I'm pretty sure that this town is always friendly. It's weird.

The Orange County Courthouse is simply amazing. Built in 1847, it is the oldest courthouse in…read moreIndiana that we visited thus far. The Greek Revival structure sits high atop a hill overlooking the town square historic buildings and a historic bridge crossing Lick Creek. On the vast Square, a stone grinding wheel holds a memorial plaque dedicated to soldiers lost during the Revolutionary War. A second memorial recognizes troops lost during World Wars I and II. Another plaque commemorates the Initial Point and describes the historic survey system used to locate the nearby Second Meridian and the center of the state. The Courthouse was undergoing renovations during our visit and the building was closed, so we could not get interior photos. But I'll definitely return to visit this Courthouse that has been operational for 175 years! There is free parking around the Square.

Vincennes added its monument made from red granite in 1914 on the northeast corner of the county courthouse. Rising over sixty feet, the vault like structure base supports an obelisk that is topped with a bronze flag bearer. The flag bearer and four other statues, one on each corner of the vault, were created by sculptor Rudolf Schwarz and were cast posthumously to his death in 1912. The other four statues represent Navy, Artillery, Infantry, and Cavalry. The monument sits in a plaza that allows access to all sides of the monument. The plaza also has granite monuments to significant historical documents on one side of the plaza. The other side has monuments honoring those who served in the military in each of the wars in our country's history. Flags fly behind the military monuments. The space is well kept and is beautiful. Because everything is done in bronze and granite, there has been little deterioration over the 100+ years. While at the monument, check out the nearby courthouse for additional statues. On the north end are two statues on the third story. One is George Rogers Clark and the other is a Union Soldier. On the south side of the courthouse is a statue of Justice. All three statues were carved by Andrea Barrot in Carrara, Italy in time for the dedication of the courthouse in 1874. The monument and neighboring statues are worth stopping by the next time you are in Knox County. Review #2976

Over 100 years ago, this Soldiers Monument was erected on the south side of the Daviess County…read moreCourt House. Standing nearly 30', it is made of white granite. Back in 1913, local artist John Walsh designed the monument. It features a flag bearer on top with a figure representing Artillery on the west and another figure representing Infantry on the east. This monument is located in front of the Daviess County Courthouse. It was erected in 1913. It…read morealong with the courthouse itself has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This memorial is a tribute to the brave soldiers who endured the hardships and fought the battles of 1861 to 1865. Daviess County supplied 2,312 men to the Union Army during this time. One of the panels is dedicated to the memory of the pioneers who blazed the trail and cleared the fields, to the brave hearted soldiers of the Indian wars who fought the battles of civilization upon Indiana's soil, and to all who answered the call of patriotism upon the nations battlefields. There is street parking along all sides of the courthouse so you can get out and get a closer look at the monument. It isn't a place you will likely spend a lot of time, but if you are interested in history it is certainly worth checking out if you are ever in the area.
