A beautiful cricket grounds, and not a bad seat in the house. I went with my mates to celebrate a birthday, and it was my first time seeing a cricket match in person. Taking the tram from Manchester, you can get off at Old Trafford and it's *right* off the stop. You could stumble into it by accident if you didn't know where you're going. As you go inside, there's assorted food trucks with all the typical grub you'd want and love from a sports match. I grabbed a fish and chips (£6.50), and was pleasantly surprised by the quality. Better than you'd think. Pints of lager are expensive (£3.50) but hey, it's a sporting venue. We sat on the far side of the field, away from the entrance, but it was clear that there were no bad seats in the house. After asking nicely, the security let us go upstairs to the "gold member" section to watch the second inning, so got a bit of a different perspective being up there. Lots of friendly staff, a well laid-out stadium, and clean grounds. A great stop for a sunny weekend.

Im a new fan to cricket, but at around £13 for a T20 game and it only being a short drive from my house, I cant believe its taken me so long to visit. One of the worlds most famous cricket grounds and with good reason, the ground has come a long way in its 150+ year history. Lots of parking, its easily accessible from the M60 and M602, the Metrolink tram also stops off just outside and there are a whole range of buses passing through the area, all with no more than a 5 minute walk once you have alighted. If you are visiting to watch a match there are the obvious food and drink venues offering chips, burgers, ice cream (if its sunny!) and beer, all pretty decent and prices reasonable too, there are even free cash points on site if you find yourself short. If you want to make a full day and night of it, then there is the 68 bedroom hotel known as the Old Trafford Lodge, where you get your own balcony to view the match, access to a private bar as well as free parking, thats one to put on the Christmas list I think. With England playing matches against Sri Lanka and India over the summer of 2011 and the venue having just been approved further development so it can hopefully host some Ashes matches in 2013, Im planning to be the Yelp Duchess of LCCC before you know it!

The less famous but still darned famous Old Trafford in Manchester is the Home of Lancashire County Cricket Club. Just a few hundred meters away from Manchester United's famous ground, the home to Lancashire's first class cricket team is still an impressive arena and hosts lots of cricket matches as well as its fair share of concerts by massive pop bands like the Artic Monkeys. Famous players you might be able to catch playing include people like England's James Anderson. The ground is easily reachable by the metrolink from town (the Old Trafford stop is literally right outside the ground) and it's a perfect place to spend a great weekend drinking beer, eating sandwiches and watching some great cricket. They're building some new stands and hospitality suite as well at the moment, so keep a look out for that as the new season approaches.

Being a cricketer myself I thought I'd chip in with a review of the ground which does it some justice, a ground I grew up playing cricket. I'm going to begin with a simple statement: Forget all other cricket grounds in the country, Old Trafford is the best outside the home of cricket that is Lords. The ground has proud history going back to 1857 when Lancashire moved here to play some cricket. This place is so much more than a cricket ground. Fantastic concerts are held here every year with recent ones including Arctic Monkeys and Oasis. The ground is actually host to Old Trafford Lodge hotel and the ground has fantastic corporate facilities. Add to that they also hace car parking available for football matchdays for Manchester United. All this and I haven't even got to the cricket viewing facilities. The ground is just fantastic with great viewing angles from all parts of the stadium there really is a fantastic atmosphere to the place. Ticket prices are very reasonable with T20 games mostly being very busy. The new state of the art facilities at "The Point" are ones to marvel over. The tag line "Get to the point" is bit corny but does have comedy value. The corporate events venue is a fancy tickle for any event organizer, with it being arguably one of the best venues in the country. It really is amazing and has to be seen to be believed even if you are not a cricket fan you will be in awe of the elevated suite withstunning glass-fronted balcony overlooking pitch. Inside, the facility offers 7m headroom without any pillars to impede your view. The open place space has a mezzanine bar and can hold upto 1000 people!! Yes 1000!!! Dancefloor capacity of 850 folksidaisys!!! It really is a hot ticket in town for match day event ticket in here. Once inside you will feel like you are in Dubai watching Lancashire or England play, aaah yes escapism at its best. So next time there is a match you fancy or even if you aren't a cricket fan just check out the venue. Everything is worth a try once I say, ok...ok...not everything but this... so its like Arnie the legend that he is said...come onnnnn.do it come on!!!!

My very first time at the MCC and first time climbing generally and I have to say that I really hope I'll be going back soon! We went for a taster session between 5 of us which lasted an hour and cost £60 between us - not bad value I think! Liam the instructor was a really cool guy (in fact all the staff were pretty chilled and friendly) and was all about the safety first, followed by teaching us on the kiddy walls - then onto the "am I really going to have to climb up that mofo" walls! After we all had a chance to get up and down the big walls a few times we then went on to some bouldering which was really cool but I could definitely feel it in my shoulders the next day - intense but good fun and you really work up a sweat! Special mention should go to what a cool place is - just check out the snaps! An old church/cathedral converted into what is an amazing space and setting - just wow!

Well, I have put that behind me. I decided to throw the idea out to the people of yelp and managed to gather together a small group of rotund gentlemen (like myself), and one pretty lady, to have a go at our local climbing wall. It was in a converted church, which was pretty cool. The MCC offer a 1 or 2 hour taster session, with the idea being that the more people you get to come the cheaper it will be. We went for the 1 hour and have to say that that was more than enough. We were introduced to our instructor Liam, who managed to show us how to put on all the equipment so as it would cause the most amount of damage to our genitals during the hour. He then took us to a child wall for our initial go at climbing. The air was filled with hushed curse words as a room full of food bloggers were rapidly been overtaken by small children on the climbing wall. Then, to the large wall! Wait?! Already?! YES!!!! And so, two at a time we were sent up the large wall. And it wasn't easy. my forearms are still aching now as I type! But it was fun. Everyone was aching together. Everyone was helping each other and egging people on. After this, we had a go at bouldering. This basically like the wall, but without ropes and only up a wall that is about 10'. Liam put stickers at some of the highest places and we all had to try and get one. Well, the things we will do for a sticker. It was carnage. People were falling off walls onto the crash mats like we were in action movies. Then, an hour was done. fantastic. I want to go back again :-)

The lovely little swimming pool is visible from the canal itself. So you can imagine my delight when I discovered it was relatively cheap, especially compared to gym groups such as Virgin Active or Fitness First. You can also avoid a contract and sign up for as little as 2 weeks, and it works out at around a pound per day. So alls well so far. Then i went inside. I think the point about the gym not really being for girls is valid, though I think lots of men should be added to that list too, as its only really suitable for bodybuilders who love dingy spaces as seen in American boxing films. Its small and dark, and pretty damp. Basically its no good. Its got all the equipment you need so if you want somewhere to go for just a couple of weeks then it serves a purpose, but its nowhere near as nice as it looks outside, and there are some better value gyms out there, so if it's a longer term membership you're after, give this place a miss.

Manchester Roller Derby has the added interest of being a part of an active co-ed league. We went along to this their 5th anniversary bout. They were in a local leisure centre on this occasion (Carnall George H in Urmston) not the most convenient spot in Manchester but accessible by a combination of tram and bus. I don't believe this is their home track but I get the feeling the bouts tend to move around with the availability of track space. There was a pleasantly large crowd but there were still plenty of seats and loads if visibility onto the track. They had supporters stalls for all the teams playing on the day with surprisingly desirable merch (especially the supporter t-shirts with your fave competitors name and number on the back) and a cake stall for celebratory birthday cake. A double header between Manchester / Wirral and Manchester / Birmingham was on the cards for the day and we set up shop in the stands. The supporters are an enthusiastic bunch and I found myself clapping and cheering for all the teams (though I should have been supporting MRD primarily). One of the fun trademarks of roller derby are the fun antics and the payer names which were not lacking. With pseudonyms like Fish 'n' Whips, Jim Jams (who was a Jammer and was wearing pyjama bottoms), Veggie Kray, Smack Bauer, Knit One Hit One and Steph Leopard. They had a pass the parcel game in the stands, a raffle for merch and a 'Throw a Duck' comp in the half times. If you've never been along to roller derby it's a full contact, fun and active sport to watch and the basic rules are simple enough to pick up in a couple of minutes explanation. I do recommend heading along to a bout and throw some support behind a local sport team in an fresh and interesting non mainstream sport. No paid endorsements or hefty salaries here they do it because they love it and it's really good fun.

This is due to some issues that arose over the last month. First of all, the policy about classes has changed, and now it's necessary to register at the counter before each session, whereas up to a few weeks ago it was enough to take the receipt of your booking using the screen at the entrance. This is often causing very long queues, and it's actually incredible if people manage to get to their classes on time. There is a stupid detail that made me think members of staff don't care enough about checking regularly the gym: in one of the rooms all the weights of less than 4kg mysteriously disappeared. I found it funny when my instructor said: "Well, try and do this exercise using 5kg, cause someone stole the lighter ones. If it's too hard you can reduce the number of reps." It's almost two weeks now, and they haven't yet reappeared. All in all, the place is always enjoyable; staff is very nice and the instructors are usually willing to help and give an induction even without booking an appointment.

The deciding factors were 1)…read moremembership sale -- £95 for 6 months (the sale is now over) 2) proximity to my house and 3) machines. Facilities: steamroom, dry sauna, pool, about 3 rooms for squash etc, two adequately-sized rooms for machines, weightroom. Prices: You can get a free membership for 7 days, but you need to book the induction appointment first in order to use the machines (also free). Call a few days in advance to book the induction, which is very thorough (!) and will take 30-40 minutes. -The normal non-student membership price as of Ferbruary 2012 was £23.99 monthly without contract, or £18.99 with annual contract. There was also a 4 week pass for £25. Pros: - The machines in the front room by the entrance seem to be constructed for people who are neither massive nor tall. I'm short and skinny, so this was perfect for me. - Other than the weight room, other areas of the gym never seemed too crowded. I very rarely had to wait to use a machine in the front room. - Attentive staff in workout areas - Good mix of different ages, genders, races: mostly working class, some yuppies - Easy and free parking - Affordability Cons: - If you basically use a gym for the free weights, the most popular room seems to be that one, as it's often packed to the gills. I recommend showing up about an hour towards closing, when it seems to thin out. - During busy times, the spacing of the machines in the back room is a bit tricky; once or twice, I was concerned about accidentally hitting a guy who was using a mat which had been placed next to my machine (why the mat was there to begin with, I have no idea.) - Their pool isn't huge like at Manchester Aquatic. To use the pool, you should check the schedule beforehand, because some days and some nights are booked up for private groups. Note: Access to Chorlton Park gym is included with a Moss Side membership last I checked, and karate is held at Chorlton Park-- but, karate costs extra. At some other gyms such as the Y, you can buy a membership that includes unlimited martial arts. I don't play basketball, but in case you're looking for a gym with a court, call ahead and find out if they have one-- I didn't notice one there.

We were back in the UK visiting his family and decided to go for an official tour. Unfortunately the team was playing in Newcastle during our visit, but the tour alone was genuinely really cool. Plus, they're building a new stadium so it was great to come here before this one gets retired. For it being an older stadium, I thought it was in fantastic shape. Very well-kept. A little smaller than I expected (maybe because I'm used to NFL stadiums?), but it holds 74k+ people, making it the largest club football stadium in the UK! Finding the parking was a tad confusion, but that's always the case at big statiums isn't it. Once we did, we made our way around to the 'tour" entrance and were immediately greeted by the sweetest of staff! They set us up with ourlayard passes and took us straight to where the tour kicked off, which was up in the stands overlooking the field. Along the way our wonderful guide talked through tons of fascinating and fun history, we got a chance to go down along the pitch, sit in the team's seats, come out through the famous tunnel, and even explore their changing room. There's also a full museum on the second floor to explore as part of your ticket, adjacent to the on-site restaurant. It was packed with memorabilia and more history to take in. Even if you're like me, and not necessarily a huge football fan, taking the tour is worth it.
