If you come by helicopter or plane, they will collect you from the airport. Book early if you are going in the season. A genuine Henry the Eighth castle, with great sea views. The best rooms are the garden suites overlooking the sea. Most are like a mini-suite, with balcony and Adirondack chairs. There is a pool, and two restaurants - the conservatory is an airy brasserie' the main restaurant is in the castle and a bit dingy, but the food is excellent. There is also a dungeon bar.

Many dishes are sensibly available in either starter or main course sizes. We recently lunched there with a mix of fish in a delicate tempura batter, with mayonnaise & excellent fries, followed by rosewater meringue, clotted cream and fruits of the forest. It's all a bit pricey, though: most mains are £15 plus; desserts a fiver. Excellent wine list - try the amazing Camel Valley Bacchus. On a sunny day, there can be no more agreeable place to lunch in England, with stunning beaches, bays, islands and boats to watch - and an attractive lighthouse nearby. And the hotel gardens are superbly kept, and brimming with sub-tropical colour.

Laid out roughly on a grid with terraces climbing the hillside, vista after vista unfolds with cacti, succulents, palms and tree ferns framing the views. As well as the 20,000 plants, the gardens are home to a colony of red squirrels, and the "Valhalla" collection of figureheads from some of the many ships wrecked around the archipelago. This collection is now curated by the National Maritime Museum. The gardens have a well stocked shop and cafe (great cakes). Tickets are valid for a day. The gardens can easily be visited as a day trip from any of the neighbouring islands. Reduced price entry is available with some boat trips. Allow at least 30 minutes to walk from the quays at New or Old Grimsby (2km). Transport can be arranged for those not able to walk.
