We walked up the hill from the train station to get there. In hindsight, id take a taxi. Friendly staff.. The only issue and it was not their fault was the drunk guy singing a Bob Marley song at 2 AM in the close under our windows. (no woman, no pride. A classic) LOL! Other reviews will mention the fully-equipped kitchen, the wonderful balcony, a home away from home. That's all true, and it's a great place to stay! So I'll tell you how to get there, because it's nearly impossible to make it there, especially with a rental car. The entrance is right in the middle of a madhouse known as the Royal Mile, the most popular shopping area in Scotland. It's chaos with pedestrian-only sections, flocks of tourists, and a secretive entrance to the hotel. So follow the directions we discovered by trial and error. Drop off: You're carrying luggage obviously and you have to get as close to the entrance as possible. Make sure you're dropped off on High Street at the restaurant known as Angels and Bagpipes. But you must be traveling eastbound on High Street (from George IV Bridge road), because traveling westbound you'll never make it (the street is blocked off to pedestrians). From here, walk through the alley to the right of Angels and Bagpipes (the alley is named Roxburgh's Close). You'll go down stairs, then up stairs to the apartment entrance, navigating 26 total steps with your luggage. It's the only way in. Parking: This is tricky if you have a rental car. So follow my lead. You can park at the Waverley train station for a 25% discount (if your parking ticket is validated upon checking out of the hotel). But it's nearly impossible to find the entrance located in a maze of one-way streets! To have a prayer, aim for 35 East Market Street (hopefully you have GPS in your car). Once you get to that address, keep traveling east on Market Street and make a left (north) on New Street when Market dead ends into it. As you descend, you'll find the garage entrance on your left. The elevators rarely work at the train station, so you'll have to take the stairs. That's why I advised you to drop the luggage at the hotel. Upon leaving the garage at the end of your stay, you cannot pay at the exit as you do in other countries. You must find a machine and pre-pay before exiting the garage. read more

Before we arrived, we tried to contact Altido for our check in instructions and got hung up on. I emailed them and there was no reply back.There was no mention of 3 flights of circular stairs or any stairs for that matter getting to the room as I am traveling with my elderly mother in law and my wife. There is no lift available. We messaged Altido about my wife falling out of a chair because there are screws missing out of the bottom that holds the legs onto it. We found another chair like that after looking at all of them after this. I called them numerous times and was hung up on before I could even talk to anyone about this. I also emailed them and no reply back. There is no microwave, but it says that there is one on the amenities list. There is water damage on the ceiling and deteriorated drywall in the hobbit closet with the light switch floating just inside it. We had to buy dish soap, toilet paper or paper towels, etc. The living chair is not usable because the straps pop of and the cushions sink to the floor when you sit in it. The apartment tenants below us asked if we knew how to contact someone for new bedding and got hung on numerous times as well as they had the same contact info as us. I'd advise staying somewhere else for the cost and trouble of staying here! read more

We couldn't be happier! Literally steps away from the Royal Mile and St. Giles and a 5 min walk from the train station. The reception staff was very kind and helpful. We came in on the overnight sleeper and dropped our bags at reception, returning after lunch to check in. We were guided to our room and walked through the "how tos" of living in these high tech spaces. These apartments are a perfect balance of style, charm, and sophistication. The design of our room is simply outstanding! I just know staying here is going to be the highlight of our trip! This is simply one of the most unique places I've ever stayed! Tips: 1. There are MANY steps to reception (100+) which can be a challenge with bags. If you come around the back (off of the Royal Mile and not through the close), you can avoid the steps but it does take you out of the way to do so. We chose to simply lug our stuff up the steps. 2. Don't expect to check in early as this place is very busy with sell outs nearly every night. Not to worry though there is plenty to do within walking distance, even in the early morning. (Hula Juice Shop is one of them.) 3. There is a washing machine but no dryer in our room. The towel warmer is floor to ceiling so we simply hung wet clothes there to dry. EDIT: the washer IS the dryer - it's an all in one. We are half way through our UK trip and it's so great to do laundry right in our room! Hooray! 4. Location, location, location. Not only is this in the heart of the Royal Mile, it is surrounded by some of the top ranked restaurants on Yelp, including the Devils Advocate, which is so close I could have them hand me a pint through the window! read more

My fiancé, now husband, and I stayed here for three nights surrounding our wedding in Edinburgh. We're both from the United States and it was our first time in the UK. Old Town Chambers is kind of built down in the ground...maybe? It has an alley way that gets you into the main courtyard where you find the main office. That said, we weren't familiar with the area, so this place a little hard to find. However, when we did find it, it was amazing. BTW, the main alley way is right beside Angels and Bagpipes (a great restaurant I'll review in a bit). The staff was incredibly helpful and polite. They held our bags for us so we could explore the city since we were a bit early for check in. They then delivered them to our room when it was ready so that we didn't have to worry about hauling them up and down the maze of stairs. When we got back to settle in we discovered a cute little apartment waiting for us, complete with a washer/dryer combo so we could do laundry and a full kitchen. The decor was simple, but cozy and homey. The building is located directly across from St. Giles Cathedral and Lothian Chambers on the Royal Mile. There are several restaurants and gift shops nearby as well. It's a very convenient location. The only major complaint is one that may have just been related to our timing in Edinburgh. We were there at Halloween, so there was a lot going on near the hotel. This led to several people that had perhaps had too much to drink hanging out in the walkways outside the building. So, there was a lot of shouting and foot noise at 1am. However, that's not really a fault of Old Town Chambers and I'd still choose to stay there again next time we are in the UK. read more

Wonderful location, stylish accommodations We stayed in apartment 48 for a few nights during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. We wanted a place near all of the action where we could have family over to relax. This fit the bill perfectly. Old Town Chambers is just off High Street and a short walk to all of the action. It is off of a "close", and we did hear a little party activity on the stairs late in the night as people made their way back, but it was intermittent and not that bad. There are a few stairs to negotiate with suitcases as you make your way up or down from the street on the close, but the effort is well worth it to be in the heart of Old Edinburgh. The apartment itself was well-appointed with a small kitchenette (including espresso coffee-maker) and milk in the fridge for the coffee, a sitting area, a breakfast nook with a booth and a sitting area with a couch, chairs and coffee table. There were huge windows, and exposed stone walls and modern fixtures. We can recommend The Milkman down the stairs of the close for coffee and pastry for breakfast and the pizza place just a few steps from the lobby for pizza or pasta. read more

Location: On the royal mile in Old Town, about a 10 minute walk up the street to the Castle. It's hidden inside a close (or alleyway) right behind Angels with Bagpipes restaurant and next to The Real Mary King's close. Rooms: We stayed in a 2 Bedroom capital + 1 Bedroom capital apartment, and they were huge! They each had a small kitchenette with fridge and dishwasher. There was also a Nespresso machine and milk in the fridge. Cups, plates, cutlery in the cupboards. The 1 bedroom had a small dining table while the 2 bedroom had a long table perfect for playing games. There was also a washing machine. Each one also had a pullout couch. The pull out couch was a little saggy but still got a good night's rest. The one bedroom had a small patio with table + 2 chairs overlooking New town. The beds in the room were a good queen size, a little on the softer side (but I like really firm mattresses). Clean, soft sheets. You might need to fiddle with the thermometer a little because it can get pretty warm in there. Bathroom: Clean + Modern with a large shower. The walls of the shower go up a little high, so for my short legs, I had to be careful getting in and out of the shower. The shower had a rain shower + handheld. There was Malin + Goetz shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. The lotion was by a different brand (I think). Heated towel warmers!!! Other Things: The location is really great, but during holidays it can get a little loud on the streets and you may hear it if you have a room facing the street. Service was friendly and very helpful. They do also have a gym. All doors have an electronic code that you will use not only for your room but to get into the hotel after hours. I know another reviewer said there were no elevators, there are elevators in the hotel but you do have to carry your luggage down 20-30 steps to get to the hotel. read more

Location is good, but no elevator, you have to carry suitcase to 20-30 stairs to get your room. No car parking. no way to talk to receipt via phone, there is no phone, you have to go see reception or email to them. room is extremely small. if you are older traveller, do not stay here. impossible you can carry suitcase to stairs, nor can hou move around inside room. we paid $370 dollar and got a basement room . no breakfast place, no bar, no service. 5 stars just doesn't seem to be enough for these fabulous apartments, that really do ooze luxury in ever crevice and corner. We were lucky enough to be spending our Christmas Day in these amazing apartments and it immediately felt like home. The old town chambers have thought of everything you could possibly need, from a pizza cutter, to fresh milk to a nespresso machine, every detail has been thought of and added for the enjoyment of the residents for their stay. The bed was almost too high to get into, with a flat screen in the bedroom which had the ability to enjoy Netflix in. The view out of our bedroom window was of the Balmoral (which we nearly stayed at- and now I'm so glad we didn't) and Princes Street, with the Christmas fair rides twinkling in the background. Our open plan living area was perfect. Oven, hobs, dishwasher, microwave, toaster and kettle- all high end versions that were immaculately clean. The open plan living area also meant that cooking Christmas dinner was a breeze. We were able to enjoy opening our presents whilst having a pot of mulled wine on the hob and a turkey in the oven! Perfection! Now the absolute best thing about the apartment that we had (number 16 if you'd like to request) was the view from the balcony. It was unbelievable how beautiful the skyline of Edinburgh is, and being slap bang in the city centre allows you to enjoy the beauty of Edinburgh at its best! Yes, they're not the cheapest places to stay, but my goodness, they're certainly some of the best!!!!! read more

Wonderful! Our apartment (number 19) had a panoramic view onto the city. We could see Scott monument, and lots of other really old beautiful buildings. I came here in December and so I also had a great view onto the Christmas market. The apartment itself was superb, set in an old building but all seemed to be done up to a stylish modern decor. Being self contained we had a kitchen, dining area, lounge with large flatscreen television and balcony. Our bathroom had an amazing deep bath. There is also free wifi seemingly per room. Mine didn't show up but when I typed in the network name it did connect. The only things I wasn't too happy about was that there was no water provided. The fridge was stocked with some milk but no water. I had to go to the local newsagents to pick some up as they didn't have any bottles even in he reception area. The other thing was their ironing board had wonky legs so I couldn't really iron my shirt because every time I was moving it was tip from side to side - actually a bit dangerous once you put the iron down on the board to move your clothes around. Watch your feet! The bed was huge and so comfortable with Egyptian Cotten. I highly recommend it here and I will certainly be coming back. read more

This is probably the best place we have ever stayed in away from home. Once you can find your way to the lobby of these apartments (can be a little tricky at first) you find yourself in an amazingly decorated modern yet comfortable building with an ancient exterior. We had an apartment in one of the upper levels. The apartment was spacious, well decorated, clean, as quiet. The views from our windows and private balcony were absolutely breathtaking. The location is convenient to everything. It's located right off the Royal Mile in Old Town and next to Waverly Station and New Town. For a self service apartment, the concierge was extremely helpful and accommodating. Our washer dryer wasn't working properly so they found an empty room with a working one and allowed us to use the washer and dryer with no inconvenience to us. Did I mention how beautiful and quiet and spacious and wonderful the apartment we stayed in was? The complex can be a bit of a maze with multiple entrances on multiple levels within a block. But you get the hang of it very quickly. We would recommend this place every time and are definitely going to book here again if we visit Edinburgh again. read more

We had an enjoyable stay here in April. You couldn't ask for a more convenient location: in a courtyard off of the Royal Mile. The rooms were immaculate and modern with everything you'd need including a kitchen with a dishwasher and washer/dryer. We were welcomed with a nice bottle of wine, and the small but adequate refrigerator included milk for my coffee which we made in the Nespresso machine. The layout of the hotel was interesting and kind of fun... we were on the -1 floor, but due to the setting in the "close," was not subterranean, instead overlooking a nice bar and one of the dramatic stairway closes that hide out in Old Town. It was a work out to get to and from the hotel, but I'm an overweight old lady and got used to it pretty quickly. However, just as a caution, be aware that it is not wheelchair friendly at all, much like the rest of Old Town. The staff were extremely helpful! We needed some medical equipment that had been left on a plane, and they were relentless in making phone calls and getting information to us. We were not crazy about the combination washer/dryer-- seemed like poor engineering more than anything else-- but again, the staff did all within their power to "fix" our machine. Their hard work and kindness made up for the inconvenience! We just really liked them! In sum, in spite of some imperfections, we loved the place! A friend who visited me there said she wanted to live there and so do I! read more

I was staying for a night in Edinburgh and was between the Balmoral and Old Town Chambers. This hotel looked like a great experience and since it was only for one night I decided to give it a try. In general, my Wife and I did not enjoy the experience due to an unpolite concierge. After arriving early (noon), no room was available due to a 3 pm check-in. No biggie but the concierge was very unfriendly while explaining why we had to wait to precisely 3 pm to enter our room. In the end, no big deal, as I said. The real issue was: I pre-ordered a bottle of champagne since we arrived the day of my Wife's birthday. Once we entered the room, we saw in one of the tables a box of champagne. So I asked the concierge, Francisco, to please remove it from my bill. He automatically said it had been already charged. The bottle was in my room, hot, and with no ice nearby. I would expect that if one pre-orders a bottle of Laurent Perrier they'd provide us with a way to drink it. Maybe it was not in the concierges power to refund me that champagne then and there, but a forceful and unpolite "it's been charged, sorry" with a ongoing rant of how this is management's policy never helps. As a frequent traveler, I hotel that offers luxury products without a high level of service is pretty tasteless. I will not be returning to this hotel nor recommending it to my circle of travelevers. That being said, the rooms were very nice. Clean and modern. But since unpolite people have the power to ruin a trip, I always would rather stay at an uglier hotel with nicer people than vice versa. Eventhough they said they would speak with management, I do not expect to be refunded for this bottle. Or for the nespresso boxes that I didn't even touch. I recommend management to please look into this. read more
