For those of you who believe you must move to the suburbs to obtain a quality education for your children, it just ain't so!! Jones is small (700 students), academically rigorous as a public "Selective Enrollment School" (granted, with highly competitive admissions), and its most unique quality, remarkable diversity: 30% Hispanic, 24% White, 24% Black, 11% Asian, 8% Native American (in Chicago!), and 4% Multiracial. Here is one astonishing factoid that speaks volumes about the quality of education at Jones, and the depth and talent of the 200+/- member Class of 2008. Collectively, these kids were awarded $11.14 million in scholarships. That's something like $55,000 per student. Here is a representative list of the caliber of colleges represented by this year's graduating class: Bard, Barnard, Bennington, Carnegie Mellon, Coe, Cornell, Eugene Lang, MIT, NYU, Oberlin, Purdue, University of Chicago, University of Wisconsin - Madison, Wellesely, and many more. Not all public schools suck.

Think long and hard if you want your child to attend this school. On the surface, it all appears great. However, its a for profit school and its all about money. If you have lots of money, your child will be treated great. If you don't, well not so much. Most concerning is that there is a fair amount of bullying in the school on various levels: bullying between peers but also there are numerous instances of teachers bullying students. Strategically, they have been trying to build up their high school for a long time. It has not been a very successful effort and now they have resorted to manipulating grades (artificially deflating grades) to ensure children cannot easily transfer. NOTE: School's grading system is not easy to understand and its not consistent across classes or teachers independent of student's actual knowledge. If you have other viable option, don't give a second thought to this school. Run away!!!

The quality of the education has really spoiled us for going anywhere else, and communication from teachers and administrators is amazing, they always hear our concerns and respond, to such an extent that we don't email them on nights or weekends because we know we will hear back from them too soon! Additionally, my husband and I had concerns about putting our children in private school, but the value of this educational institution is truly outstanding. Highly recommend!

We wanted them to learn how to think and process information rather than to memorize. We also wanted them to have a more global understanding and what it meant to be a member of a global community and interact with a diverse student body. We found that, and more, within GEMS World Academy ~ Chicago. The teachers are among the top of their fields and know how to get the best out of their students. The Field Studies help them engage and interact with the outside world and apply their learnings in real-life settings. Our kids engage with a diverse group of students, parents, and educators. It's exciting to enter their lobby and hear a mixture of different languages spoken at any given time. We're entering our third academic year at GEMS and my kids look forward to going to school every day, something I couldn't say when they were attending their former school.
