We have learnt that in Spain people have dinner quite late so we arrived starving for dinner while they were setting up. Asked what burger they recommend, had no idea what the heck they suggested but we ordered what they point out. With choice of bun and rare/medium/well done for the pattie. First burger had a well balanced of meat, lettuce and tomota. The smokey flavour of the bacon complimented the beef and brought the whole burger together. Huge block of soft feta cheese was lovely. Soggy bottom bun was a little disheartening. Still very enjoyable and would have again. Second burger was the biggest impact of flavour. Three cheeses, one being gorgonzola (blue vein), was so powerful it was like being punched in the mouth with taste. It was overpowering but still delicious. I had to dip the burger into the wife's BBQ dipping sauce, using the sweet smokey flavour to balance out the cheese. Salty and not for the faint of heart. Fries was a little under cooked for my liking. I like a crispy golden brown chip with fluffy insides and a good helping of salt. Very casual environment. A bit like a family steak house meets fast food. Service was great. They were very patient with us and our grapple with the Spanish language.

It ended up being a great choice! We started with their fries which came with truffled cheese sauce and egg yolk. It was a big portion. I enjoyed the sauce a lot and had to stop myself from eating all the fries. As for my burger, I went with the tudanca- 100% ox meat, candied boletus (mushroom), cured jowl, caramelized shallots and boletus mayo. I throughly enjoyed the tender burger. If you want, they provide disposable gloves. We also had Txakoli- a dry, slightly fizzy white wine from Spain's Basque Country. We had a bottle of it as they don't do wine by the glass. Saved the day! One…read morething that you often forget about Spain is their strict dinner hours along with the need for reservations. We found ourselves starving at about 6pm and unable to find a place open for dinner. As we walked around Bilbao we began asking at a few places we had earmarked as options, all were booked or didn't serve dinner till 9. Amaren was one of those places. We defeatedly took the reservation... but then realized that a few steps away Hambueysería Amaren would be ready to accommodate at 7:30pm. The place is heavily rated. They are the burger specialist to the Amaren brand but obviously have the high standard of meat as Amaren. We opted for the t-bone and the sweet breads. The sweetbreads were fun as they were finished off at the table, served with some mushrooms, eggs, caramelised onion, and Italian white truffle oil. The boneless t-bone was a surprise. We thought it was strange when the waiter didn't ask us how we wanted our meat cooked. However, this was all because we would be cooking our meat to our desire at the table. This was so much fun and engaging. They perfectly salted the steak and the steak fries were addicting.
