Holkham Bay - Sand dunes at Holkham beach.

I go there at least once every summer, even though it means three hour drive from London. The beach is a part of Holkham Hall and Estate, and boasts miles and miles of sandy shores, sand dunes and unspoilt nature. I can't think of a better place to relax and unwind, with picnic basket in hand. I make a point of visiting during the week, as there is hardly anybody about, so the feeling of peace and tranqulity is even heightened. With sun on my face, warm sand under my feet, ocean waves rolling to and fro, and occasional horse rider for company, one can only think of one word to describe the feeling - bliss. The entrance to the beach is lined with pine trees, which add a special feel to the place. It is hard to tear yourself from the beach once you are there, although the nearby Holkham Estate is definitely worth visiting too. There are parking facilities at the beach entrance, as well as Holkham Hall itself, at a very reasonable rate.

You will have to pay for this parking. There is no other way to access this beach. You can park in the village but you risk annoying the villagers and you will have to cross a very busy and dangerous road. Park as close down the car park as you can. Once you leave your car and go across the cattle grid you are in for a very, very long walk. With little kids it can take easily 20-25 minutes to walk. You must take everything with you - there is a cafe at the bottom of the car park for you to stock up - because you won't want to return before the end of the day. There are no amenities or lifeguard on the beach. So you'll end up like a pack horse and leave room to carry one of the kids back! Also wear beach shoes. On the tourist information it will talk about the sandy beach. Well, it is sandy but with lots of stones and razor shells in it! When you get onto the beach you will love the vast expanse of it. No-one will be on top of you. You can walk for miles if you want. It's the ideal recreation beach. The water is cold but it is clean and realtively shallow. Leave enough energy for the walk back!

I used to trot around here as part of my training when I competed in the London Marathon - highly recommend, gets you in a great head space as you take in all the different views of the water. Walking, cycling & dog walking are other activities you can do,to name just a few, there is also *depending on the seasons a Rutland Water Aqua Park - but make sure you pre book as this is very popular. Normanton Park Church is a tourist hot spot as well as a Zoo! & a man made beach. There are plenty of cafes & children's play areas, with rock climbing (Rock Block). Hambleton peninsula is worth a visit with local pubs dotted around Rutland Water. We live near here & I think most Rutlanders will admit that they don't use the area as much as they should. Although we will be taking a wander to take a look at the new Sea Dragon which has just been unearthed

Great place for canoing and other water Sports. Many people hire cycles out or bring there own to go around the water, it quite a ride but makes a nice day out. Also great for walks, feeding the ducks, there is also a marina area and in the summer there are boat trips. Food is expensive so better to bring a picnic or packed lunch

DON'T BELIEVE THE POSITIVE REVIEWS YOU SEE ONLNE…read more We stayed at Hunstanton Camping and Glamping branch of this group. These guys like to bill themselves as a 'premium back to basics site in a premium location', and they charge premium prices. I've stayed in many campsites with better facilities that are a quarter of the price. We were booked for two nights but left after one as it was so dismal. In reality, it's a tiny, basic campsite. No hot water for washing up, no facilities whatsoever for children and paths underfoot consist of rubble and broken bricks. Generally, the site is pretty untidy and feels like a building site. Yes it's dog friendly, you can have campfires and it is walking distance to the beach, but it's also situated in a rather scruffy and down at heel area of north Norfolk. Those that run the campsite will say it's a work in progress, that's fine, but charging upwards of £50 a night for a work in progress is a joke. Go elsewhere because you really don't need to spend this much on a super basic site. Go to one of the hundreds of other sites that do only charge £20 a night.

Just back from a wonderful stay at 'The Old Barn' cottage at Norfolk Coast B&B Cottages & Camping…read more My wife and I shared a lovely few days together in Heacham on the coast of Norfolk, we were blown away one evening while at The White Horse in Brancaster enjoying our dinner, out from under a storm cloud appeared a bright orange setting sun, not at all strange you think, but we are on the east coast of England! We then learned that Hunstanton is a rare place indeed it faces north and has a west facing coast! Our stay here really was perfect, with the lovely cottage and its rustic features, to the amazing facilities available to us like a BBQ pit and outside dinning area, nothing was not thought of. We would highly recommend The Old Barn if you are looking to stay on the Norfolk Coast

The show's were ok but the night before Christmas you don't get to meet Santa after which was a little disappointing. The fairground and pool were hits with our daughter. However we found the activities disappointing. Firstly the Butlin's app failed so all the booking and planning we had made was lost and we had to scramble around to try and rebook activities. Speaking to guest services and their response was basically tough luck our system broke and you lost your activity booking. With a generic apology. How do you explain this to a 2yr old that they now can't do an activity anymore? Luckily the resort wasn't too busy and we did manage to get into some activities. Which were ok but not great: We found The play doh kitchen creations activity the play doh sets had so much missing that it was hard to play with and not a great advert for play doh. Messy play it took so long to get in and settled that the 30 minute season was nearly over when it had just begun. Also be aware that they do not provide aprons for the finger painting which got everywhere. In short the holiday would have been relaxing and enjoyable if it had not been for the stress of having rearrange activities. If you go to Butlin's I just hope you don't need to contact Guest Services because they don't have anyone on site and they overall attitude is pass the buck.
