I love to make regular stops here for their fresh boiled peanuts and homemade pork rinds. They usually have regular & Cajun peanuts and both are fantastic. I've tried their plain, bbq and salt & vinegar pork rinds and just can't get enough of them. Delicious! They also have a great selection of produce, as well as honey, jams and sauces. This is the only place open closest to Blue Ridge Parkway, so my friend and I made a stop because all the coffee shops were closed unfortunately in the afternoon. Not only do they have veggies, fruit (GA peaches, watermelon, purple beans, etc.), jellies, soda, cider, dairy products & meat. I couldn't resist and got a pack of Salted Country Ham (tastes exactly Iike the name of the item)! If you're a savory person, try it. I think it's better than regular Ham, which is sweet. I got a Cream Soda & I convinced my friend to get Waynesville Soda: Lavender Honey. It's locally made & I have tried other flavors - this one is strong in Lavender and a very floral drink. The business is on the side of the mountain, so just whip your car around it - one way is best. FYI - $0.75 to use your CC. I wasn't told until after my purchase. read more

We are from Florence SC and we try to take a trip to Maggie Valley/Cherokee NC a couple times each year. Our trip is never complete without a stop at Old Gray Mare. The people are very nice and courteous. They have a little bit of everything in this store, fresh vegetables to boiled peanuts to homemade butter and breads. If you want it they probably have it! The building sits between Maggie and Cherokee. It has an old farmhouse feel to it. I absolutely recommend anyone traveling to or through this area to stop by and give Old Gray Mare a visit and see for yourself. read more

Last week I was in Maggie Valley and happened to stop in to shop at The Old Gray Mare. I had my dog, Queen, with me and the owner was kind enough to let her shop with me. She even offered Queen a treat... How Kind! I purchased several jams and jellies along with molasses, honey and fresh grapes. Many were gifts to friends here in Miami. But some I kept for myself. Right now I'm getting into the Elderberry Jelly... oh so good!!! I recommend everyone traveling through Maggie Valley, NC to stop by The Old Gray Mare and experience first-hand true Southern Hospitality! Tomatoes and peaches were good. The Asian plums were good, but could not be eaten as suggested- we waited for them to get ripe, and they tasted like a cross between a plum and a tomato. Cucumbers were horrible- they tasted like fresh garbage. They have everything that you see in the photos, and eggs, cheese, butter, pork skins, and some cured meat. The woman who works there is very nice. They are on Highway 19, nestled right between Maggie and Cherokee. They are open from April to December, eight to seven. Call first to make sure. read more

My family and i have been coming up here for over 30 years and by this road side shop for years and years. We would always get apples there a mixed bushell. Well we stoped in today for the last time. The woman wont give anyone the time of day. They also wont sell a mixed bushell. The man that i assume runs the place seeing as how he is the only one that will talk couldnt explain why they wont sell what we want. We even told him we would pay what ever. So my father a Marine Corps vet said that dont make no damn sense. Well holy hell the big dude flipped and ran us out. Lmao first time ive ever been kicked out of a fruit stand. Anyways we would spend on average a hundred bucks or so gettin apples and butter and jellies and jams for gifts. Never again and ran my dad out on vetrans weekend on the Marine Corps birthday. read more

We've been going here every time we go to N.C. I'm surprised at the comment about the lady. I've have always had good conversations with her and she has always given me info on what I was purchasing. They have the best prices and jams and jellies that I have found in the area. We were there in June and bought some local made bread loaves that were very delicious. Just finished the last today. To each his own. I will be back again and again as long as they are there. read more
