OK, Haiku Tuesday inclinations aside, the presentation of cakes and slices in this patisserie is divine. My coffee partner ordered the vanilla slice, and was very impressed with what she described as a super smooth and creamy custard filling, and crisp, sweet pastry. The woman was impressed, and happy to share her opinion with the world...well, me because I was there, but nonetheless, impressed!! I ordered a coffee, mostly because I was still full from lunch, but also because looking at the food on offer, I was fairly certain that I would be doing well to unearth a vegan treat among the towers and lines of baked cake and pastry goodness, where gold leaf reigned supreme. Admittedly, I didn't ask, but the risk that there may not be something vegan friendly on offer won't stop me from heading back in future just to make sure nothing slipped under my vegan radar. I'm thorough like that, and besides...the coffee was good, and served in a beautiful Degas decorated cup. All in all, an aesthetic feast.

Firebrand Bakery, a small rustic bakery on main street, that creates hand-shaped sourdough bread baked in an original 1930s wood fired oven, without using commercial yeast or additives. Personally I'm iffy about things being unwrapped, people breathe on them, and bugs (flies touch them...) I prefer everything shrink wrapped. There's a large selection of unwrapped paper bagged loafs, to give that real rustic feel, some baked slices/muffins and Boscastle pies. At 1.30pm they were almost sold out of pies. We had the chicken mushroom well seasoned and herbed without being too salty or liquidy. Delicious! Yes you can buy these in the freezer at IGA. As someone who grew up on pastries (and frozen food in general) these are one of the best I've had, with a matching price tag. A flourless raspberry & boysenberry slice was what we're really here for. At $5 it was average price, though we were happy with the size. The slice was just like a friand! Moist all the way and delightful! Can't wait to get this again. I would have like the option to serve it warm with cream but it's takeaway only. Though some tables outside would be nice. Service was very friendly, unexpectedly they take card, no min. Unlike the fruit shop on the same strip. We can't wait to return for a loaf and sourdough chocolate croissants! I think a warm loaf (even if it was warmed on the journey home) is one of life's most wonderful simple pleasures!

I live right by the QV Market, which has plenty of decent bread, but Firebrand is the real deal. All of their bread is made with a natural leaven (started around the same time AC/DC had their big breakthrough, how can you not love that?), hand-shaped, and baked in a wood-fired oven. Totally worth the trek across town. Each day they bake different breads, so check with the baking schedule before you go. Personal faves are the Spicy Fruit Sourdough and the Schwarzbrot (100% Rye), baked on Mondays and Tuesdays, respectively.

Sure they make your typical varieties of fresh breads and sweets, but it's the Greek speciality items on offer that makes The Village Bakery worth a visit. The spanakopita in particular is a rare treat. They don't make it often, so when it is available, the locals flock to it. The folio pastry they use must be homemade as it's nothing like the stuff you'd find in a supermarket. It's thicker and beautifully crispy on top. The filling has the perfect balance between salty feta and earthy spinach. I can definitely see why it runs out so fast. One morning I popped in to grab one of their Greek pastries with the custard in the middle, and the owner told me they had just baked a fresh batch and went to get me a one from the back. It was still warm which made it twice as good. Now I try to get there in the morning hoping to score another freshly baked goody.

When my husband said "Merci" to our server, she quickly asked, "Vous parlez le francais?" We were there for breakfast and luckily there was one almond croissant left when I placed my order. If they were all sold out, I would have been heart broken. Almond croissants are my favorite and I tend to like to judge a place by its almond croissants (and macarons). The croissant was not the flaky and airy type but instead was a little more dense with a generous amount of almond paste filling. There might even be a hint of almond liqueur in it. Although I'm used to airy croissants, I must say that I really like French Fantasies' interpretation of almond croissant.
