I must say that I'm surprised by all the negative reviews on Oishi Kitchen. To be honest, we would normally never eat at an establishment that receives a 2-1/2 star average; however, we had already sat down before reading the Yelp! reviews. (Yes, we could've simply walked out, as we hadn't ordered anything; but, we decided to give it a shot as we were famished.) The interior has an appealing industrial-minimalist decor: Clean lines, natural plywoods, exposed concrete, metal-framed glass dividers, industrial lighting. We started our lunch with a couple perfectly chilled draughts of Kirin beer ($9 ea.). A gratis offering of either steamed edamame or dried carrots were offered as an entree. (As an aside for my American readers: Here in Australia, what we call the starter or appetizer back in the States is called an entree, while the American entree is called a "main" here.) We went with the bowl of edamame which were perfectly boiled in salty water, clean and fresh tasting. I ordered the (spicy) Chicken Bento ($11.50); my buddy ordered the Chili Chicken Karage ($14.80). I was born/raised in Hawaii where Japanese bento-box lunches have always been very popular. The portions of Oishi's bento were, for me, perfect. (I know there are a couple of reviewers who complained about the portion sizes; however, I was wholly satiated at the finish of my meal. The portions were in-line with what one would receive in a Japanese bento-box.) Service was friendly, but a tad bit inattentive; although, one might simply attribute it to the culture. Overall, it was a very satisfying lunch that I recommend. read more
