Phlebotomy Training Specialists

Avoid this school at all cost because "I assure you, this isn't a scam, but it will certainly feel…read morelike one." That was the instructor's opening line on the first day of what was advertised as a three-week phlebotomy certification course. Instead, I encountered a vague, shifting timeline that could stretch to six to nine months due to disorganized and poorly communicated externship scheduling. Despite asking in advance, I wasn't told until after class started that externship sites were in San Jose and Martinez, which are up to 50 miles from El Cerrito. Former students warned that these externships offered little real phlebotomy experience. Tasks were limited to labeling urine cups rather than drawing blood, forcing many students to return for additional training just to meet licensing requirements. After attending one three-hour session I withdrew only to receive a threatening email from the payments department about external collections. The school claimed I owed over $500, which they later reduced to $213 only after I submitted GPS data proving I had left early because the school charges by the hour and the instructor falsely claimed we were dismissed on time. Even the instructor seemed frustrated, noting she had to bring her own water for students (no fountains or sinks) and received little support. While this program might not meet the legal definition of a scam, its misleading advertising, inaccurate timelines, vague communication, and hostile billing practices certainly make it feel like one. I strongly recommend avoiding the El Cerrito location because it offers the bare minimum for licensure, not the skills or support needed to succeed.

What a rare, and beautiful program is Gaia Girls. Sarai, Erika and their cohorts are extraordinary…read moregifts to our children and us mothers. To say Gaia Girls is the antidote for the cynical, materialistic culture we inhabit doesn't do it justice. To praise the peace, groundedness and loving kindness Gaia Girls fosters only scratches the surface. To gratefully acknowledge the powerful process Gaia Girls creates to strengthen the mother/daughter relationship is modest. My daughter and I spent a life changing weekend together with Gaia Girls and I am deeply grateful. We are benefiting every day from what we brought home with us (blessings, songs, gentle awareness of each other), and we can't wait to go back!

When I arrived on Friday to spend the weekend with the other mothers/female caregivers and girls, my daughter was so happy to see me and include me in the world she had entered. It was so special to see all the girls, each with their own mother/ female caregiver and sense the bond that they each shared. There were activities for mothers and daughters to do together and I felt these activities brought me closer to my daughter. There was also time for the mothers to connect with each other and there were even mentors for the mothers, from whom I drew a lot of support. I experienced many circles of connection during this weekend-- connecting with my daughter, connecting with the mothers, connecting with the mentors and the village they had crafted to support us, connecting with nature on my own and collectively, and more... Some girls and mothers who attended had known each other for awhile and we were new. I wondered what this would be like, but both my daughter and I found everyone to be very welcoming and inclusive and there were other new families as well that were very easy to connect with. I am so grateful that both my daughter and I could have this nurturing, inspiring experience and we are both looking forward to participating again this summer.

El Cerrito Swim Center is the only pool I swam at when I lived in the East Bay (2015-2019). I came…read morefor lap swimming and greatly appreciated that the pool was open year round. A seasonal schedule was posted online which made it easy to check when lap swim hours were and adjust my work schedule accordingly. If I was really ambitious I would get a swim in during my lunch hour. I found midday lap swims to be the least busy, especially during non-summer months. The evening lap swims could get a bit packed and showers could get crowded when trying to shower before getting in the pool due to a high volume of youths showering after swim team practice. Lap swim while water aerobics is going on is quite the treat. A few lanes were dedicated to water aerobics and other lanes would be open for lap swim. Music played during the water aerobics class, which made my kick sets enjoyable getting to listen to music and swim. I paid per lap swim which is the more expensive option. There is also a pass option where the pass is good for a certain number of lap swims or certain number of days and you pay in advance for the set number of swims or days. They had these passes for lap swim, water aerobics, the masters swim team, and recreation swim. For lap swim the passes were for 10 swims, 30 days, and 90 days. The price range for these lap swim passes spanned roughly $50 to over $300. Something to keep in mind when budgeting if you also have and/or want a gym membership. Facilities were clean and the lifeguards kind and helpful. Kickboards and pull buoys were provided on deck. The pool entrance and usage fees were well marked and payment for each swim was simple and straightforward.

She was really patient and showed me…read morethe very basics of getting going with my serger - how to thread, some interesting tools and tricks specific to my machine - things I need to know to even begin to play around with this complicated AF machine. Full confession: this is a second review, the first one was immediately after taking a class and I was extremely disappointed - I felt like the class wasn't organized or efficient with time and I left not knowing anything more than when I started. But Diana reached out to me directly and came to my house and provided 1.5hr personal lesson, which I tremendously appreciated. After talking with her, it sounds like that class was really challenging for many reasons and I respect that there are situations out of your control, like the class dynamic and when people show up with weird machines you're not familiar with. I greatly appreciated her reaching out to me - I'm so used to getting burnt by things like that, that it didn't even occur to me to reach out about the negative experience! At the end of the day, all I wanted was to be able to load the d*mn machine and to serge a corner. That being said, I realized that moving forward, spending the extra $$ for a one on one might be a better choice for me in the future - with a baby, a full-time job and often very specific needs/questions re: sewing/serging, this hour+ together was way more helpful and manageable than a class. Ultimately, I found Diana to be very approachable, easy to work with, and very patient.
