THIS IS WHAT ALL "FISH FRY" RESTAURANTS SHOULD BE...!!!
Seriously, Oh Andros is our favorite restaurant at the Fish Fry in Nassau, and we've been to Fish Fry 5 or 6 times. Oh Andros is the best by far...
Portions are huge. The seafood is incredibly fresh. Prices aren't cheap (nothing is in Nassau), but they're completely fair for what you get. Service is polite.
This is a local's place. I'd say 80% of diners at our most recent visit, and 100% of carry-out customers, were Bahamian locals. Obviously that's a very good sign. We felt completely welcome, as tourists, too.
There were 8 of us on Wednesday night. We had no problem getting 2 tables. The place was packed, but they turn tables regularly.
Our favorite was the Fried Seafood Platter ($44), which included fried fish fillets, fried shrimp, a huge fried lobster tail that was simply fantastic, mac & cheese, plantains, and a huge scoop of very delicious peas and rice. Two people will easily get full on this huge Platter. It was a bargain - no way you could get this much delicious, fresh seafood (including a big lobster tail) for $44 at home.
Most other entrees (without lobster), are around $20-$22 each.
PRO TIP #1 - BRING CASH. They ONLY accept cash. US or Bahamian dollars are both fine.
PRO TIP #2 - allow plenty of time. When the restaurant is mobbed, and it's usually mobbed, food can take a while to arrive. I mentioned we had no problem getting tables, and we ordered promptly. Drinks came fast, appetizers came pretty quickly, but the entrees took 90 minutes to arrive.
Every table was waiting for their food - regulars and tourists - everyone. It was fair. They just have more tables than kitchen capacity.
Hey - you're on island time, mon, order some conch fritters and sky juice (a delicious blend of gin, coconut water and sweetened condensed milk) or a cold Kalik beer and be patient... it's worth it...
But DO NOT GO if anyone is already hangry or your kids are melting down. It takes time for food this good.
PRO TIP #3 - SUPER IMPORTANT DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS - Oh Andros has really good air conditioning. Many of the other restaurants don't have a/c at all, or it isn't very good a/c. We''ve sat at another restaurant with pretty good food but really lousy a/c, and we had sweat pouring down our faces for an hour. Inside. In the a/c.
The 3 separate air conditioning units at Oh Andros is wonderful.
PRO TIP #4 - you can take the #10 or #12 bus from Breezes or Baha Mar. I'm pretty sure you can also take a bus from Atlantis, too, but ask the bellman which one. The bus is $1.25 per person each way, and it's easy and safe and very "local" and kinda fun.
Since a 3 block taxi ride in Nassau seems to cost $40 (which makes me insane - it's extortion - ripping off the tourists), I highly recommend getting to know the bus. But know the buses stop running about 7PM, so if you're going for dinner, you can take the bus there, but you'll need to negotiate a taxi for you return.
PRO TIP #5 - ALWAYS ASK IN ADVANCE HOW MUCH A TAXI RIDE WILL COST, and don't be afraid to negotiate or walk away.
I've seen rides from the airport to Breezes cost $40, $50, $60, even $110.
That said, plenty of taxi drivers in Nassau are honest and friendly, but some are horribly opportunistic and will jam-job you on price at the end if you didn't ask up front.
Taxi rates in Nassau are supposedly regulated, but there doesn't seem to be any consistency in prices to me. Most taxi drivers will agree to a fair price if you negotiate the price up front, but some will rip you off horribly at the end if you don't.
Many taxi drivers in Nassau are nice people and honest, but this advice comes from multiple episodes of infuriating personal experience getting ripped off.
In summary - Fish Fry is fun, colorful, very "local", definitely "divey", and a very fun evening out when your family gets tired of the same food over and over at your resort buffet, or you get tired of being ripped off at Atlantis by $65/person for truly lousy barbeque.
Fish Fry is pretty safe, albeit probably a little outside the comfort zone for at least one of your companions.
It's easy to get to on the bus, great fun to walk around, and Oh Andros is absolutely a delicious restaurant. It's the best... read more
