Oglebay Resort has been a Christmas tradition for our family, and I hope that it will be for many years to come. We just finished a week-long stay in one of the cabins and it was one of my favorite memories of the year. The cabin was comfortable, especially with warmth from the fire we kept going in the stone and brick fireplace. The cabins are located in quiet wooded areas within close proximity to the main lodge, so you're never far from your next meal but you can also enjoy the peaceful natural surroundings (we had several groups of deer pass right by our windows during the week :) I decided to grab a deep tissue massage at the West Spa while I was there. The spa is a new addition to the lodge, and I must say I was quite impressed. I've been to spas in Manhattan and San Francisco, and Oglebay's West Spa is definitely on par with the best I've seen. The waiting room is relaxing and the massage rooms themselves have new massage tables and waterfalls on the wall to help you relax. I definitely recommend the buffet at the Ihlenfeld Dining Room. Make sure you book your dinner reservations as far in advance as possible as this is a popular dining option for people staying at the lodge. We booked ours in advance and they had our table ready right on time. I love how Oglebay is constantly evolving - every year there is something new or upgraded, from brand new additions to the lodge to upgraded technology in the rooms and common areas. This is a definitely a resort that is focused on being the best in the area! read more

Horrific traffic. Don't expect to have dinner the evening you go unless you pack and eat in your car.

Stay away from this place. The management and leadership of this resort are the worst I have ever experienced in my life. And for what it's worth, I've had plenty of opportunities and experiences. Until there is an abrupt change here, do not waste your time or money at Oglebay. It is too pretty of a property to have such horrible management, leadership, accommodations, and terrible service attitude. read more

Beautiful location actually breathtaking in the fall. We arrived on Friday night ended up driving around the entire campus before we found the main lodge to check in because while the streets are marked there where no street lights to be found anywhere where it made sense to have them. Like over the street signs just a suggestion. My 78 year old father even called to say they were lost and wounding around the campus because they could not see the street sings. We stayed here to attend a wedding. Sounded great to us park the car for the weekend and enjoy the company of our family. Once we found our way to the main lodge I went in and was checked pleasantly greeted as if we had been coming there for years really happy so far except for having to drive round and round for 20 minutes. We find a place to park and then realize we are about what feels like a 1/4 of a mile from our room which was difficult for me with medical issues. The halls are clean but everything was outdated not in a rust way in an old warm out way. We find our room finally. By the way keep that map handy as it's wry easy to get lost because all of the buildings are connected. Without clear markings on which direction or wing to are coming and going to. Get into the room everything is old, not rustic stains on the floor on the armchair. I have to clean the heating and air vent because the vent the blew air out was absolutely COVERED in thick heavy black dust it was disgusting! It clearly had not been wiped since it had been put in. The bathroom was so small that in order to close the door that barely cleared the toilet rim to open and shut. You literally had to stand up and startle the toilets far back at you could while balancing on one foot to open and shut the door which was the same process you had to use to get into the shower. The beds were like sleeping on bedrock and the pillows where just as bad. Needless to say none of us slept well at all. We did enjoy the wedding and the fact that we did not have to drive anywhere for the weekend. The wedding was simple yet beautiful the reception was the same Nd the food for mass production was pretty tasty. They have a geill and bar as well don't recall the name maybe the glass grill that was absolutely amazing worth every penny sent there and the staff was supper accommodating. Did I mention how good the food was? Super disappointed with the rest of our stay especially after hearing my aunt rave about this place for years and how their family would go there every year and even sponsored a bench for a loved one that passed way. Not worth the cost to stay there but definitely go wat at the grill. read more

I stayed here for two nights for a wedding in mid-July of 2011. We left Washington, D.C. at 7pm on a Friday night and made it to the front desk by 12pm, with a quick stop in Morgantown for dinner. The staff was always friendly and helpful to us. My friend and I stayed in one of the older rooms but it was nice for what we paid; about $130 a night. Our room felt a little old, but it had all the standard amenities: a flat screen television with cable, telephone, bathtub/shower and a large bathroom sink. We also had a cot delivered to our room at no extra charge. Wi-Fi internet is offered and available for free, but it's only accessible in the lobby. They should extend the coverage to the entire hotel. The grounds are beautiful and there is ample parking, which is good because you need to drive to most of the activities. The hotel is surrounded by a large golf course and to get to the other activities such as the pool, driving range, stables, zoo, and mansion, you need to drive. There is a trolley and a bus that will take you around at designated times though. We had lunch at the restaurant in the hotel, the GlassWorks Grill, which was pleasant. I had the "Oglebay Best" burger and a soda for about $14, including tip. The service was quick and the food was good and reasonably priced. Afterword, we drove to the driving range. For $8, you get a large bucket of golf balls and a golf club to rent (they gave us one each and we shared a bucket). The range goes back 200+ yards and many of the stations are in the shade. We went through two buckets in two hours. There is a snack bar looking out over the range, but it wasn't open. We spent the afternoon at the pool. Getting in was a little confusing because they had prices listed at the front desk and we automatically assumed they charged you an entry fee, even though we were guests of the hotel. We told the attendant we were guests, showed her our room key, and she had us sign in and we didn't have to pay. They should make that less confusing to guests of the hotel. Someone described the changing rooms as "prison-like" which I think describes them perfectly, but you're only in there for a brief moment. The pool was very large and fun to swim in. There was a large grassy area to sunbathe and relax right next to it. There was a snack bar above the locker rooms, but I didn't go into it. The wedding was fantastic. The ceremony was outside in the Formal Gardens by the Mansion, which was beautiful. Following that, cocktails were served on the back terrace of the hotel which overlooked the valley as the sun set, a band played, and hors d'oeuvres were served. A sit down dinner followed in the large ballroom which lasted until midnight. There was an open bar on each side of the ballroom and a live band in the middle. When the reception ended, a small group of us (including the bride and groom) moved the party to the bar next door at the GlassWorks Grill, and the manager of the restaurant (who was professional, respectful and attentive) said that as long as everyone was respectful to him and his staff, they'd stay open as long as people wanted drinks. They stayed opened for us until two. Overall, the weekend and the experience were great. The resort was fun, reasonably priced and accommodating. The location itself is beautiful and there are a wide range of activities to do. I wish I had the chance to explore Wheeling a little more. I'd definitely come back if I get the chance. read more

Place is scenic and beautiful, but my god are the staff rude and inconsiderate of their customers time. Been waiting for our cabin for almost an hour when inspection was finished then. For anyone concerned, just get a hotel somewhere else and drive by to see the deer. read more

First and foremost, if you're expecting a chain hotel or resort, don't come to Oglebay Park. You will be sadly disappointed. However, if it's beauty you want and miscellaneous experiences for children and grandchildren, Oglebay will deliver. Having just attended a large family reunion in Oglebay, and wedding in Wheeling, it's obvious what the Park COULD be with some updating of facilities and greater attention to maintenance: coffee pots, bathroom facilities, kitchen features, lighting. But it is what it is: fun! The cabins we stayed in are basically the same as they were 50 years ago: comfortable, sturdy, no frills. Now for why you come to Oglebay: nature is everywhere, as in deer, massive trees, creeks, etc; the Good Zoo is equal to any small city zoo in America; the train takes long trips through the trees and by the animals; the putt-putt is challenging; the paddle boats are super; the playgrounds are safe and well maintained; the indoor and outdoor pools are refreshing. And it is packaged and priced well: 3 adults and a child= $82 for all day and all activities. The deer are so tame that they graze outside your cabin door. To reiterate, if you want modern, there are Hampton's and Marriott's in Wheeling. If you seek adventure in a family environment, bring your ur own food, cookout, kick back, and enjoy the West Virginia hills. read more

OK maybe 4.5 as it is a bit pricier than needed. Great room = premium double queen with pretty view. Nice lodge, helpful friendly staff. Great setting, lots of green space, a nice small zoo, nature center, golf, dining. Golf =- Palmer course was fun and scenic. Par 3 closes in early Oct - no mention on website. Was part of the family plan so wish expectations had been set before arrival. Very hilly courses. The Lodge course (Crispin?) is a goat ranch with greens. Still family fun golf with deer and bare hills. Jones course not played but looked nice. Palmer was heavily marshalled. We passed on group and played in 3:10. Dining - nice (not the greatest but nice) seafood buffet on Friday night - but pricey at $29. My halibut was very well prepared but again $29. Nice experience. Nice wine list with many BTG options. (By the glass). The views and the quite combined with available activities make this place a winner for our family. read more

First time coming to the Festival of Lights and so far I'm not impressed. Didn't realize traffic would be so horrible. We drove over an hour to get here and have been sitting in traffic for over 3 HOURS and we are still not at the park. SO CLOSE TO TURNING AROUND! If I could give it a zero I would. Needless to say we won't be returning. read more

I only attended a wedding and festival of lights here, so that's all my review is going to be about. During the winter time, expect insane traffic to the Festival of Lights and main resort area at night. There's only a one lane road leading to it and it took over an hour to go 2 miles. No exaggeration. Once we got to the wedding in the Pine Room, we were thrilled! The venue was nice, but not the best. The decor is outdated, the only bathrooms are in the basement, and they closed the bar for a good 45 minutes during the wedding. This venue doesn't have a kitchen so a lot of the food tasted burnt from sitting so long in the warming dishes because of the late guests (due to the traffic). Not their fault, I suppose, but I feel like they should have planned for that. The space was the perfect size for the wedding and overall, it was a good time. read more

We took my mom for Mother's Day Buffet. She found very kitty she could chew. We had great servers and the rest of us ate well!

This review is for someone who is staying at Oglebay.... It pains me to give this beautiful Park 2-stars because the amenities, the restaurant, the staff... nearly everything in the park is first-rate, except for the hideous rooms that look and feel like a cheap B-movie motel from 1955. The park should be ashamed of itself. Chalets start at $200 a night. I've been in Holiday Inns that were nicer. From the ugly old and thin bedding to the minoot shower and unbelievably small bathroom, this room had absolutely no amenities whatsoever except a TV. No convenient outlets! Nowhere to plug in an iPhone or an m3p player! The rooms truly shouldn't have more than one bed EVER ...but if you are unfortunate enough to get a two-bedroom, the beds are two uncomfortable (cheap mattress) full-sized beds squeezed together and you have to crawl ON THE BEDS just to get to the side lights because the room isn't even wired for you to have light in it when you open the door! You have to crawl on the beds to get to the lamps! I don't understand... I'm sure the park makes plenty of money because everything else is pristine, but to not invest in those rooms is a sin and a crime. Not how you want to spend a winter holiday weekend. read more

Been coming to park at Xmas time with family for 40 years. As lights have grown this once beautiful park has become your typical corporate money hungry money pit. We always have rented cabin with 20 or more family but have never received any special treatment for our consistent return... we were never told we no longer needed to rent cabin two years in advance and cabins have been rented out from under us. ... no one there cares in least that we have been faithful supporters of Oglebay. This wonderful family park is just another destination for anyone who wants to spend ridiculous amts of money on a week vacation during Xmas time. Unfortunately this will be our lady year coming. read more

We bought a package with one night stay, dinner, breakfast and a round of golf. Our room in Wilson Lodge was very clean, spacious, with king size bed, granite counters on desk area and bathroom, and a lovely balcony overlooking the park. We enjoyed our dinner very much. The food was excellent. The service was friendly and that made up for the very inexperienced young staff. They seemed to have a poor sense of timing, or bad communication with the kitchen, as our appetizer showed up with our entrées. We simply sent it back. I had ordered the lamb chops and they were wonderful. My husband had the pork porter house. It was nicely flavored and the sauce was great. Breakfast buffet was excellent with choices for all tastes, with omelet and waffle stations. The following day, we golfed at the Trent Jones course and loved it. We would not hesitate staying there again and highly recommend the resort to families as it offers an array of great activities. read more

I used to always love going to Oglebay for the Festival of Lights however the traffic is horendous and I feel as though there has to be way to keep things running more smoothly. We waited 2 hours and saw nothing, ended up turning around because of how obscene the lines were. I will not go back read more

The first year we attended it was amazing. But has gotten cheaper and less organized as the years went on... This past year, yesterday was by far the worst.... We were seated at our table by the hostesses, got our food from the Buffet and began to eat. We had a table of 8, with one toddler in a high chair and an adult in a wheelchair. The hostess came up to our table and told us that we sat at the wrong table, however we were escorted to that table by Oglebay Staff! She told us we had to move and grabbed two of our plates "to help us" move to the correct table. We went to follow her with all our plates, a baby in a high chair and an elderly adult in a wheelchair and could not find her.... We had no idea what table we were to be seated at or where our plates went. Thank God for an amazing family sitting at the table next to us, who helped us carry everything. We finally figured out where we were supposed to sit on our own. She literally made the mistake and instead of owning up to it like a grown up she walked away....I approached the president/manager/whatever he claimed to be and he apologized and told me to have a good time and I had his number???????? We did have a great time being with family and friends but the way we're treated was unfortunate, unprofessional and unnecessary. Needless to say we will Never return there! read more

Love this place for my husband and I to have a quick weekend getaway. Love the Lakeside and West wing rooms as they are updated. Balcony views are so serene. The interior space of the lodge and the grounds provide the perfect ambiance for relaxation and plenty of options for fitness! read more

The lights are cool but they are spread out. The traffic is horrible. You need to be here 1+ hours before it opens or you will sit in stop and go traffic the whole way. Bring food drinks and something to urinate in. It's takes roughly 2.5-3 hours to get through with the traffic. read more

Took a bus group here twice the grounds are very beautiful, but the second time we were put all over the place some in the new section after complaining about the old section. The resort needs to update, the road leading up to the lodge is crumbling on the sides and that's scary!!! The prices are to expensive and with West Virginia taxes being over 13.5% it almost makes it not worth the stay when their are other Accommodations in the area that offer much more comfort. read more

Made reservation for New Year's Eve with 2 other couples. Was told to arrive early to avoid rush, arrived early, rooms for 1 of us was ready, the other 2 rooms were not ready, but would call us as soon as they are, checked back after an hour, was told still not ready but would put a rush on it. after 2nd hour was told since they still weren't ready they would call housekeeping to have it made a priority. after waiting 4.5 hours rooms finally ready after 5 pm! Staff was extremely rude, and when asked to talk to manager was told one was not available! House keeping informed us that they were NEVER notified we were on site! Was told we would be contacted by management to discuss and would comp our trolley ride we had booked for our inconvenience which DID NOT HAPPEN, NEVER HAS THE CALL FROM MANAGEMENT. It was such a huge disappointment that this "high end" resort had such horrible service, and that they practice deceitful policy's. Would never recommend this horrible place and will never return!!!! read more

Gave the golf two stars a few years ago. Went back and they are CONSIDERABLY better. Better attitude by the staff all around. Golf was made more fun. Not being run by the gestapo. Only thing that keeps this from an extra star. Way too crowded. If you are paying top dollar for gold. You shouldn't have to wait hole after hole. Build in some space! That being said. This resort has quite a wonderful first impression I have to admit. The staff is friendly at check-in and the entire area is well maintained and beautiful, but something sinister is happening behind the scenes that you won't find out until you are out of the state and your credit card is securely on their computers. Some friends and I rented a cabin for a weekend getaway thinking this would be a perfect spot for some golfing and relaxation. Expecting that we would be friendly with the folks staying in the surrounding cabins, we moved the furniture out of the center of the living room and the rugs to the closet. People were coming and going from our cabin but us renters were there the entire time to make sure no one tried anything funny and that nothing got out of hand. After a pleasant weekend of hanging out with friends and meeting new people, we mopped any dirt we saw tracked in off of the floor, replaced the rugs and furniture, and departed from the resort with every intention of returning next year. It wasn't until nearly 3 weeks later that things took a dramatic turn for the worse. I was charged $1150 for an extensive cleaning fee when all that needed to be cleaned was at most some dirt off the tile floor, assuming we missed any spots while mopping, and 2 bowls and a plate which were dropped and the remnants were cleaned up. I tried to call the manager multiple times through the phone number he provided in the email notifying me of these outrageous charges but he refused to answer a single call. Around 2 days after receiving the email, which was the only notification of these excess charges, they charged the full amount to my card and continued to ignore my calls. After months of being ignored with no way of getting a dime back, I finally realized this must be some kind of a scam where they lure people in with a semi-reasonable price and then charge them ridiculous cleaning fees just because they provided a credit card. It was dishonest and I felt cheated when I received the bill and I will recommend avoiding this place to anyone I know that plans on visiting this area of West Virginia. read more

A friend of mine was having a reception at the resort so my husband and I booked a room for two nights and took our two year old son with us. The first thing that annoyed me was the consumer service... I booked the room over the phone and never got a confirmation email even after calling back twice and asking for one. The room was small and out dated... Out dated bad!! Also we paid almost $200 a night and there wasn't even a frig in the room and the "free wifi" was such a weak signal that it didn't even make it to our room and we were only ten rooms down from the lobby. The indoor pool was nice but dirty and NOT heated, the sauna wasn't working either, and almost all the games in the game room were broken. Pretty view but no real amenities for the price... In all its over priced and old and was really a waste of money. Would not recommend it. read more

Honestly my favorite place in Wheeling. I went here just about every day for the entirety of the time I lived in Wheeling for 2 years just to walk around. There was the occasional music festival outdoors, a few weddings, and I loved to sit by Schenk lake to just relax or study and watch the people fishing. The glass museum is a good reprieve when it's cold out. It's a perfect spot for picnicking, walking, jogging, eating, and family time. The pool is a hidden gem great for a full day of relaxing and cooling off. Never as crowded as Wheeling park. I've heard the food is great there, but I haven't dined enough times to really say. Oh and obviously the golfing. I never hear enough about that. I definitely miss the whole Oglebay experience, which is why I'm reviewing it almost 8 months after I moved away. Hope you get to stop by. read more

We went to a wedding here recently, and the experience was very nice. The only one thing that could have better were the rooms. Ours was a little outdated, and sort of smelled like must. But, I like to call that "rustic". The staff was super friendly, and the food was tasty. The ballroom was defiantly decorated beautifully, and was more than spacious enough for the 250 guests. I would definitely go back, hopefully for some golf the next time, because the courses looked fantastic. read more

I have been staying at Oglebay for over ten years and even got married here. This past stay was disappointing beyond words. After booking a cabin for a 2 night stay, we were told that we would have to move to a different cabin on the second day. We were OK with this, assuming we would move from one place immediately in to a second. The alarms went off when we were told that we would get "early check in". I followed up with several phone calls to try and confirm that we would not be left without accommodations for part of our stay. The folks I spoke to, including supervisory staff, treated me like my request was unreasonable and an inconvenience to them. They neither apologized or made any attempt to accommodate us. We did not get "early check-in" and were left for over 5 hours during our stay with no accommodations, in winter, driving around with our dog and our luggage. They could not or would not do something as simple as clean the cabin we were moving into right at check out time and allowing us to stay in the first cabin until the second was cleaned. We were told we would get a discount but every person I spoke to said a different amount and at check out time, no discount has been applied. Although the first cabin we stayed in was lovely, the second was dirty and smelled so bad we had to open all the doors and windows. For the amount of money we paid, this kind of treatment is completely unacceptable. read more

Beautiful place that has a lot of potential. But horrible service. I was there twice this week and first time food was great service was not so much. Went back for a second time and food was worse than the service.... raw chicken on my salad that came 15 minutes after the rest of my table was finished eating. Finally got my salad that I had to inhale as fast as I could only to find no discount or anything. Ordered a pizza and had to ask twice for plates. Had to beg for refills. Very sad to see such a nice location have such bad service. Honestly don't know if we will ever be back. I e worked in this industry for a couple years and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to train employees to do better than this. After witnessing what I did in the last three days, 100% management's fault for not doing a better job with hiring and training. Curious as to how the rest of the resort is run - hopefully better than the bar/grille. read more

I've shopped at the various shops at Oglebay for years. I recently went to Farmhouse, the flagship gift shop at Oglebay, and was saddened by the selection. I found out that about a year or so ago, the CEO at the time decided to contract out all of the gift shop buying and management to some company headquartered out of state. And the the gift shop employees lost their Oglebay jobs and benefits! This new company buys all of the items for the shops and manages the shops (and when I say shops, I mean every retail shop at the park). The previous employees lost their benefits. This is the same thing that was done with the golf course management several years ago...local staff were let go and the golf management was contracted out to an outside firm. This has to stop! We want to be proud and supportive of our local park, but we can only be so if the management and control of these aspects remain local. read more

We stay every year for the Festival of Lights which has become a family tradition for us. My kids love the light displays and the zoo. The basic rooms are old and uncomfortable and expensive for what they are. The pool area with hot tub and sauna are also dated but it looks like they continue to get large tour buses of customers throughout the holiday season so I don't see that changing. This year we are going to try staying at the Hampton (gets great reviews on yelp) closer to the highway and see how bad the traffic is getting up the hill. Also, I would avoid the restaurants. I haven't tried the dinner buffet but we have ate at the sports bar type restaurant a few times and the food and service is incredibly slow every time. read more
