The theater itself is charming, cozy, and very comfortable, with multiple seating options, a definite plus. The staff was friendly and helpful, which truly enhanced the overall experience. The seats are comfy, the staff is welcoming, the logistics run like clockwork, and the acoustics are consistently phenomenal--every note rings out perfectly, no matter where you sit. Last night's Black Jacket Symphony performance of Led Zeppelin's music was no exception on the performance side--just incredible. But oh, let's talk about the atmosphere. When I stepped into the auditorium, I wasn't met with the warm embrace of a perfectly tuned heating system. No, I was smacked in the face by a wall of heat so intense I briefly considered whether Led Zeppelin might've been covering Hot for Teacher. Thankfully, someone on staff noticed that the audience wasn't exactly giving a standing ovation to the HVAC situation and turned the heat off. But then came the second act of discomfort: stagnant air. The kind of air that just sits there, like a guest at a dinner party who refuses to leave. No fans, no circulation--just a thick, unmoving mass of stuffiness that somehow felt more oppressive than the heat itself. And here's the thing: when you're in a packed room where the average age skews over 60, and you add in the not-so-subtle aroma of decades of cigarette smoking clinging to clothing? Let's just say it wasn't a breath of fresh air. The show itself was phenomenal--so good that I stayed despite feeling like I was trying to breathe through a wet blanket. But honestly, Jefferson Performing Arts Center, you've got to do better. Temperature control and air circulation aren't just "nice-to-haves"; they're the baseline for a venue of this caliber. I want to keep coming back for these incredible performances, but next time, let's make sure the only thing taking my breath away is the music--not the HVAC drama.

They have a decent selection of shows that highlight local talent. In December I saw a local interpretation of It's a Wonder Life, entitled It's a Wonderful Life, Y'all and resets the action to New Orleans with many local nods and jokes. The production creativity was great. The whole show was put on by 5 actors which was amazing. And the sets and props were standouts. The main theater holds over 300 seats and the Lagniappe theater is smaller. The night I was there, the theater was packed but still comfortable and the theater is fully accessible for those using wheelchairs. There was also a concession stand selling snacks and mulled wine. Definitely a fun spot to spend an evening.

It was first established in a garage space in 2000 to serve as an alternative to the Main Auditorium on campus, which is not readily available to the school's theatre students. The space has a small stage & backstage area, concessions stand, & basic stage lighting & sound system. At this time I'm the facility manager/drama faculty, & since 2014 we've had regular programming such as a student drama showcase in the fall, & a fully-produced play every spring. (These are distinct from the non-EJ theatre events that frequently occur in the Main Auditorium.) The space is modest, needs some upgrades, & is even a little rough but we've produce high-quality work by exceptionally talented students for low ticket prices. I think this alternative name was to try to make folks forget they were going to a school. I'm not sure what the Jafa bit is about. And for a HS based theater it's really pretty good. It has good sound and is pretty large (seats 1500 people). I've seen broadway shows and operas and kid performances in this theater. (As an aside if you're ever invited to see the musical Titanic, don't. Oh so boring.) Once upon a time, I even auditioned here...only because my friend wanted to. The parking is alongside the length of the school and do not block driveways on the surrounding streets because residents have tow trucks on speed dial. It's definitely still open since I just saw a listing for performance happening later this month.

While this is not that . . . it's perfect for New Orleans and the south and has it's own flavor. I loved the show here! Madame Kennedy was the perfect emcee (and also put on a wicked black light bubble show). Some acts were sexy and seductive. Some acts were acrobatic and martial arts based, as Madame Kennedy said, "I'm sure someone is missing their anime character somewhere." There were hula hoops, feathers, and grinders! One act was a woman who put a grinder against a metal plate on her belt and sparks flew everywhere! I also saw my first (as far as I can remember) burlesque by a transgender man. It was so much fun! We did the reserved tickets, so we got a table right up front. There isn't a bad seat in the house, but I really prefer being in the center of the action. Doors open at 6:30 for a 7 PM show, but ours was running late (we didn't mind). They have a basic bar with decent prices. They also do dance classes, varying show themes, comedy routines, and more. So you'll always be able to see something different.

The whole production was visually stunning and engaging. Angie Z has not only a beautiful style of dance, but her voice was incredible! We were all just sucked in by her and by all the dancers that night. Remember to bring money for tips and it doesn't just have to be dollar bills. Big bills are appreciated too but very well deserved! It was classy, nostalgic and titillating. Burlesque is an art and it takes dedication to do it right. You can tell how much heart they all had for this production. Really enjoyed the experience, would definitely recommend to others.
