We're vacationing in Prince Edward County (in Ontario, Canada) for a few weeks and the nearest town to where we are staying is the quaint, marina town of Picton. In order to do our grocery shopping, we take the 10 minute drive into this charming town and I've been exploring Main Street's numerous shops. I happened to be running an errand at the other end of Main Street and of course, a store called "Books & Company" caught my eye. (I love bookstores!) I walked into a very welcoming and very large space that appeared to house a few different groups. It seemed like it was part 'big bookstore' (reminded me of Indigo and Chapters), part independent bookstore (think 'Book City'), part used bookstore (my favourite), then, off to the side....wait, was that a hallway to the next door coffee shop? Yes , this establishment was a blend of my two favourite types of stores. A coffee shop attached to a bookstore! And this isn't one of the big, commercial coffee shops that are partnered with a just-as-big- bookstore, it was a small town, family run coffee joint, which in my opinion, are the best kind! (['ve reviewed Miss Lily's separately) While I waited for my coffee to be made, I meandered across the small hallway that joins Miss Lily's to Books & Company. The small ramp also serves as a community pin-board for the area. I actually found out via the board that there is a Harry Potter camp in the area. (My elder boy may go!) After picking up my coffee I wandered around the book store, which was exactly what I thought it was: part new books like Indigo (with a great children's section in the back) and part old and used books (I was in that section for a while). There's even a great stationary area and community space upstairs, which happened to be hosting a local art collection that can be browsed for $3.00. I bought an old book for my measly old-book collection that I'm thinking of starting. ("Over the Ocean to Paris" by Franklin W. Dixon...I'm a bit of a Francophile) And I also picked up a blank greeting card with a photo by a local photographer of a scene from Prince Edward County, for my penpal. (You read right, I do have a penpal!) The lovely lady behind the desk was great to chat with and after I told her that it's a lovely place, she said that it was an even lovelier place to work. I made my purchase for $4.95 and walked out into the sunshine. What an amazing start to the day. If you're in Picton, ask a local where "The Bookstore" is. They'll know exactly what you're talking about.

The owners also run a cast iron fabrication facility, Iron World, so there is a collection of cast iron fencing and other objects intermingled with the Bali items to make this place even more eclectic. My wife and I love stopping here just to look around, although we do usually wind up picking something up, there are no pushy salespeople and no pressure to buy, just helpful staff to answer questions. Make an overnight of it and do a yarn crawl! If you live closer to them than I do, they offer a Knitting Club which meets up at the shop every Wednesday afternoon from 4 - 6 p.m. This is such a good idea; knitting is such a tactile "sport" that you can touch and feel the yarn to make your best choice, then sit and knit it for a bit to get a feel for it. Us knitters just want to sit down and dig into a project especially once we have chosen the yarn! It would be so nice to have all day every day to sit and knit and create wonderful items by hand - this makes me a little envious of yarn shop owners! Sitting in a shop to knit with other knitters is very inspiring - you learn a lot watching them, and often want to try their projects as well. Knitters are a very helpful group. The owner - Linda - is very friendly, so don't be afraid to talk to her. You'll need to plan to spend some time here, along with your money :-) I specifically like her shop for the wonderfully array of unusual yarns she supplies. I got a gorgeous beaded turquoise yarn from them, and can hardly wait to knit it up!

So my parents are both interred in Napanee (fancy word for buried), and I live in the greater…read moreToronto area. I try to visit their resting place on occasion, but it's not a good trip to make. Not easy anyway. Honestly, I should've kept more friends from grade school. Anyway, on the trip down to visit them I realized I should get some flowers. I actually tried another florist that was in Belleville, but they had closed for the day. In fact, I'm not sure if they're even open for the day. Think I sent their updated hours to Yelp. Yelp also showed me this shop, which was not far away and still open. I came in and the florist and cashier were very helpful and very friendly and set me up with a beautiful bouquet. I stroll around and took a look, they had a lot of very nice things there, tchotchkes and christmas things. Got myself a fancy bar of soap, in case the one in the hotel was bad. It wasn't but I just brought it home now. I'm gonna use it when it's turn comes up. It's a nice shop, in spite of what could possibly be a awkward name; it sounds like something you'd find in a neons sign on the wall of your friend who has an "I t's wine o'clock" T-shirt. But it's good, friendly, and the price of the flowers didn't feel like they were taking me for a ride. I'll probably come by here again the next time I'm going back to Napanee.
